AIM:To make a retrospective analysis of endoscopy findings and clinicopathologic characteristics of colonic schistosomiasis in order to further improve our understanding of the disease and decrease its misdiagnosis. METHODS:Endoscopy findings and clinicopathologic characteristics of 46 intestinal schistosomiasis patients were retrospectively *** the patients underwent colonoscopy and all biopsy specimens stained with hematoxylin and eosin were observed under a light microscope. RESULTS:Of the 46 colonic schistosomiasis patients,1 was diagnosed as acute schistosomal colitis,16 as chronic schistosomal colitis and 29 as chronic active schistosomal colitis according to their endoscopic findings and *** all patients were suspected of or diagnosed as colonic *** the 12 misdiagnosed patients,4 were misdiagnosed as ulcerativecolitis,1 as Crohn's disease,and 7 as ischemic *** segments of rectum and sigmoid colon were involved in 29 patients(63.0%) .Intact Schistosoma ova were deposited in colonic mucosa accompanying infiltration of eosinocytes,lymphocytes,and plasma cells in acute schistosomal colitis *** fibrosis was found in chronic schistosomal colitis *** the 17 patients with a signal polyp,hyperplastic polyp,canalicular adenoma with a low-grade intraepithelial neoplastic change,tubulovillous adenoma with a highgrade intraepithelial neoplastic change were observed in 10,5,and 2 patients,*** out of the 46 patients were diagnosed as colonic carcinoma. CONCLUSION:Endoscopy contributes to the diagnosis of colonic schistosomiasis although it is nonspecific. A correct diagnosis of colonic schistosomiasis can be established by endoscopy in combination with its clinicopathologic characteristics.

AIMS To study the pathologic classification of gastric neuroendocrine tumors and its clinicopathologic significance. METHODS Paraffin embedded sections of 52 gastric neuroendocrine tumors including 42 carcinoid tumors, and 10 cases of neuroendocrine carcinoma from 326 patients who underwent resection of stomach carcinomas were studied by immunohistochemical methods including 10 endocrine markers or hormones antibodies and endocrine cells in gastric neuroendocrine tumors and extratumoral mucosa were observed under electromicroscope. RESULTS The 52 gastric neuroendocrine tumors were divided into three types: ① Gastrin dependent type of carcinoid (26 cases) accompanied by chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and tumor extension limited to the mucosa or submucosa complicated with hypergastrinemia and G cell hyperplasia. This type was consistently preceded by and associated with generalized proliferation of endocrine cells in the extratomoral fundic mucosa. ② Non gastrin dependent type of carcinoids (16 cases) associated with neither CAG nor hypergastrinemia. This type was more aggressive; and ③ Neuroendocrie carcinomas (10 cases), which are highly aggressive tumors. CONCLUSIONS A correct identification of different types of gastric endocrine tumors has major implications for the treatment and prognosis of the patients.

BACKGROUND: Biliary atresia, the etiology of which still remains unclear, occurs exclusively in newborns and most are infected with rotavirus. In this study, we aimed to investigate the histopathological patterns of different kinds of rotavirus in the liver and biliary tract of neonatal mice and the expression of NF-kappa B in the liver and biliary tract of infected mice. METHODS: Twenty-three adult mice (8 were male and 15 female) were divided into 8 breeding pairs, and each pair (I male and 2 females) was housed in a cage in a laminar flow hood. Newborn mice, 24-48 hours old were randomly divided into A, B and C groups. The A and B groups were respectively inoculated with MMU18006 and SA11 rotavirus through the intraperitoneal route, while group C as blank control was only inoculated with culture medium. The liver was dissected after 5, 10, 15, 21 and 28 days; the weight of each mouse and the histopathological patterns in the liver were recorded. The expression of NF-kappa B in the liver and intrahepatic bile ducts was detected by immunohistochemical staining and the expression intensity was analyzed with a GT-2 imaging instrument. RESULTS: The average increase in weight of infected mice was significantly slower than that of the normal control, while the growth rate of group A (injected with MMU18006 rotavirus) was slower than that of group B (SA11 rotavirus). In infected mice, the acute and chronic inflammation of liver and intra- and extra-hepatic bile ducts was more significant in group A. Stenosis was found in most intrahepatic bile ducts, and sporadically in extrahepatic bile ducts. The expression of NF-kappa B in infected mice was dramatically higher than that of the normal control, while the expression in group A was higher than in group B. CONCLUSIONS: Significant damage to the liver and biliary tract of neonatal mice can be induced by inoculating MMU18006 rotavirus through the intraperitoneal route, which is very similar to the pathology of biliary atresi

BACKGROUND: combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC) is a rare histopathologic form of primary liver cancer. We report a case of cHCC-CC and review the literature. METHOD: The clinicopathological features of a 61-year-old male were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was preoperatively considered on the basis of clinical findings resembling those associated with HCC. Hepatectomy was therefore performed. Microscopically, the specimen displayed histological features of cHCC-CC. The patient has remained alive after follow-up for 3 months without evidence of recurrence and metastasis. CONCLUSION: It is difficult to make a correct preoperative diagnosis of cHCC-CC and hepatic resection is the treatment of choice.

Objective To study the mechanism of central nervous system(CNS)injury in chronic fluorosis and the neuroprotective effect of chondroitin sulfate(CS).Methods Forty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats weighting 90-120 g were divided into 8 groups according to body weight by random number table,6 rats in each group:control group,drinking tap water freely;low dose and high dose fluoride groups,freely drinking tap water with fluoride content of 10 and 50 mg/L,respectively;control+normal saline(NS),low dose fluoride+NS,and high dose fluoride+NS groups,each group was fed for 180 d,and treated with intraperitoneal injection of 0.66 mg/kg NS for 5 d(once a day);low dose fluoride+CS and high dose fluoride+CS groups,each group was fed for 180 d,0.66 mg/kg CS was injected intraperitoneally for 5 d(once a day).All groups were fed standard nutritive animal feed for 185 d and dissected for brain *** pathologic change was observed after hematoxylin-eosin(HE)staining;the expression levels of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2(phospho-Erk1/2)and glutamate receptors 1,2(GluR1,GluR2)in the brain cortex were detected by immunohistochemistry;the protein levels of Erk1/2,phospho-Erk1/2,GluR1,and GluR2 in the brain cortex were detected by Western *** Brain cortex of all rats in the fluoride groups showed eosinophilic degeneration,loss and disordered arrangement of neurons,and the brain morphological changes in each fluoride+CS groups were significantly improved compared with those in the fluoride *** results showed that compared with the control group[(0.44±0.09)%,(1.49±0.05)%,(2.51±0.54)%],the expression levels of phospho-Erk1/2[(1.47±0.09)%,(1.03±0.05)%],and GluR2[(2.37±0.06)%,(3.38±0.12)%]in the low dose and high dose fluoride groups were increased,and the expression levels of GluR1[(1.49±0.02)%,(0.99±0.19)%]were decreased(P<0.05).Western blotting results showed that compared with the control group(1.00±0.12,1.76±0.3
