Dear Editor ABA induces the phosphorylation of three basic helix-loop-helix （bHLH） transcription factors, called AKSs （ABA-responsive ki- nase substrates; AKS1, AKS2, and AKS3）. The unphosphorylated AKSs facilitate stomatal opening through promoting the tran- scription of genes encoding inwardly rectifying K＋ channels （Takahashi et al., 2013）. The relative contents of normal alkanes and isoprenoid alkanes from pyrolysed products of green alga Chlorella protothecoides increased when the algal cell subject to hydrolysis and bacterial degradation were used. Their value of C 23 -/C 24 + and the rate of Pr/C 17 increased greatly whereas the contents of C 20 alkenes were remarkably low compared with that from untreated sample (as control). These results are more analogous to the formation process of hydrocarbons derived from algae in natural geological environment.

Abstract:Chedrical instruments are widely used in modern analytical chedristry for chedrical analysis. However, modern chemical instruments especially the hyphenated instruments generate huge anount of data in each measurement. Data compression techniques are required to reduce the data for storage and further analysis. In this paper, data compression techniques commonly applied to analytical chemistry are reviewed.

The Ray Wu Society for Life Sciences (RWS) is a non-profit professional society of Chinese-American and Chinese life scientists with the goal to promote scientific communication among the scientists between USA and China and the life science research in China. The members of the RWS, now numbered more than 300, are a group of elite biologists who have reached the level of assistant professor or equivalent in their careers and are experts of their respective fields including molecular biology and genetics, cell and developmental biology, me- dicine, pharmacology, plant biology, and biotechnology. RWS was founded in early 1998 by a group of life scientists who have come from China during the last 22 years. With the encouragement of Dr. Chris Tan, the Director of the Molecular biology Institute in Singapore, who proposed to set up a fund in the name of Prof. Ray Wu of Cornell University to recognize his contribution to the academic exchange between China and the USA. A quick positive response was reflected from American Chinese scholars with a further proposal of forming a professional society. This initiative spread rapidly and widely throughout the existing networks of Chinese life-science professionals.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by multicause, obvious multistage and multifocal processes of tumor progression. The development of HCC is related intimately to overexpression and signal transduction of many cellular factors. This study was undertaken to investigate the dynamic expression and alteration of heat shock protein (HSP) gp96 along with its gene during HCC development. METHODS: A rat model of hepatoma induced with 2-fluorenylacetamide (2-FAA, 0.05%) was established in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Total RNA and pathological changes were observed during hepatocarcinogenesis. Total RNAs were transcribed into cDNA by reverse transcription and the gene fragment of gp96 was amplified by nested RT-PCR. The gp96 expression in rat liver tissues was semi-quantitatively analyzed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Histological examination suggested that hepatocytes in rats fed with 2-FAA showed vacuole-like denaturation at the early stages, then dysplastic nodules appeared at the middle stage, and finally progressed to tubercles of cancerous nests. A tendency of increasing liver gp96 protein level was found from normal liver to precancerous to cancerous tissues during hepatoma development (P<0.01), and was in accordance with the changes in gp96 mRNA (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: HSP gp96 is involved in HCC development and its overexpression may be a useful marker for early diagnosis.

Dear Editor, Recently, engineered endonucleases, such as Zinc-Finger Nucleases （ZFNs）（Carroll, 2011）, Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases （TALENs）（Mahfouz et al., 2011; Li et al., 2012）, and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats （CRISPR）-associated （Cas） systems （Cong et al., 2013） have been successfully used for gene editing in a variety of species. These systems generate double-strand breaks （DSBs） at target loci to drive site-specific DNA sequence modifica- tions. The modifications include sequence insertion and deletion and other mutations in the host genomes via the error-prone non-homologous end joining （NHEJ） pathway or sequence correction or replacement through the error-free homologous recombination （HR） pathway （Symington and Gautier, 2011）. Here, we show that the CRISPR-Cas system can be applied to generate targeted gene mutations and gene corrections in plants, and the system can also be readily engi- neered to achieve deletion of large DNA fragments and for multiplex gene editing in plants.

AIM: To investigate the aberrant expression of nuclear matrix proteins in human gastric cancer cells before and after hexamethylene bisacetamide (HMBA) ***: Proteomics analysis of differential nuclear matrix proteins was performed by two dimensional electrophoresis polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass *** expression levels of three nuclear matrix proteins were further confirmed by Western blotting and their locations in nuclear matrix filament were observed by quantum dots-based ***: Proteomics analysis showed that 43 protein spots were significantly changed due to HMBA *** proteins were identified in the HMBAinduced differentiation of gastric tumor *** proteins spots were down-regulated while seven were *** these proteins,prohibitin,nucleophosmin and hnRNP A2/B1 were significantly decreased in HMBA-treated human gastric cancer cells,and their locations in nuclear matrix were altered by *** results proved the alteration of specific nuclear matrix proteins during the differentiation of human gastric cancer *** the aberrant expressions of nuclear matrix proteins were of significance in revealing the regulatory mechanism of tumor cell proliferation and ***: The aberrant expressions and intracellular redistributions of nuclear matrix proteins before and after HMBA treatment indicated that nuclear matrix proteins play a pivotal role in the differentiation of gastric cancer cells.
