Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the liver presenting as a unilocular cyst

BACKGROUND:A malignant fibrous histiocytoma,recently referred to as an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS),is very rare in the liver,and only 34 cases of primary hepatic malignant fibrous histiocytoma have been reported in the English literature. METHODS:We report a rare case of a hepatic UPS presenting as a unilocular cystic lesion with respect to histopathologic features,the newly revised diagnostic criteria,and the differential diagnosis. RESULTS:A 60-year-old man presented for evaluation of epigastric pain of 7 months *** computed tomography revealed a hypodense,unilocular cystic mass in the right lobe of the liver,measuring 14.0×11.1 cm.A right lobectomy was ***,the cut surface showed a single,well-circumscribed unilocular cystic tumor mass containing dark red-brown necrotic debris and blood clots, which occupied most of the ***,the tumor consisted of haphazardly arranged mononuclear pleomorphic tumor cells,admixed with abundant osteoclast- like multinucleated giant ***,the tumor cells expressed vimentin *** histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings were compatible with a *** patient is alive and well 41 months after surgery without recurrence. CONCLUSIONS:Clinically,most of the hepatic UPSs are solid *** two cases have presented as multilocular cystic masses.A primary hepatic UPS presenting as a unilocular cyst has never been reported.A UPS should be included in the differential diagnosis of unilocular cystic lesions in the liver.

Axonal regeneration after spinal cord injury in zebrafish and mammals: differences, similarities, translation

Spinal cord injury （SCl） in mammals results in functional deficits that are mostly permanent due in part to the inability of severed axons to regenerate. Several types of growth-inhibitory molecules expressed at the injury site contribute to this regeneration failure. The responses of axons to these inhibitors vary greatly within and between organisms, reflecting axons＇ characteristic intrinsic propensity for regeneration. In the zebrafish （Danio rerio） many but not all axons exhibit successful regeneration after SCI. This review presents and compares the intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of axonal regeneration in the injured spinal cord in mammals and zebrafish. A better understanding of the molecules and molecular pathways underlying the remarkable individualism among neurons in mature zebrafish may support the development of therapies for SCI and their translation to the clinic.

Inhibitory leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptors in cancer development

Inhibitory leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptors(LILRB1-5) signal through immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs(ITIMs) in their intracellular domains and recruit phosphatases protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 6(PTPN6, SHP-1), protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 6(PTPN6, SHP-2), or Src homology 2 domain containing inositol phosphatase(SHIP) to negatively regulate immune cell activation. These receptors are known to play important regulatory roles in immune and neuronal functions. Recent studies demonstrated that several of these receptors are expressed by cancer cells. Importantly, they may directly regulate development, drug resistance, and relapse of cancer, and the activity of cancer stem cells. Although counterintuitive, these findings are consistent with the generally immune-suppressive and thus tumor-promoting roles of the inhibitory receptors in the immune system. This review focuses on the ligands, expression pattern, signaling, and function of LILRB family in the context of cancer development. Because inhibition of the signaling of certain LILRBs directly blocks cancer growth and stimulates immunity that may suppress tumorigenesis, but does not disturb normal development, LILRB signaling pathways may represent ideal targets for treating hematological malignancies and perhaps other tumors.

Inhibitory effect of voglibose and gymnemic acid on maltose absorption in vivo

AIM: To determine whether diabetic care can be improved by combination of voglibose and gymnemic acid (GA), we compared the combinative and individual effects of voglibose and GA on maltose absorption in small intestine. METHODS: The small intestine 30 cm long from 2 cm caudal ward Treitz's ligament of Wistar rat was used as an in situ loop, which was randomly perfused in recircular mode with maltose (10mmol/L) with or without different dosages of voglibose and/or GA for an hour. To compare the time course, perfusion of 10 mmol/L maltose was repeated four times. Each time continued for 1 hour and separated by 30 minutes rinse. In the first time, lower dosages of GA (0.5g/L) and/or voglibose (2 micromol/L) were contained except control. RESULTS: Absorptive rate of maltose was the lowest in combinative group (P2 micromol/L voglibose with 10 mmol/L maltose were perfused in the loop. The onset time was shortened to 30 minutes and the effective duration was prolonged to 4 hours with the combination; therefore the total amount of maltose absorption during the effective duration was inhibited more significantly than that in the individual administration (P < 0.05, U test of Mann Whitney). The effect of GA on absorptive barriers of the intestine played an important role in the combinative effects. CONCLUSION: There are augmented effects of voglibose and GA. The management of diabetes mellitus can be improved by employing the combination.

On the functions of astrocyte-mediated neuronal slow inward currents
