Goal: The goal of this study is to define the epidemiological profile and identify the different brain lesions diagnosed in ultrasonography in preterm infants in Benin environment. Patients and methods: It is a prospective cross-sectional study of analytical aiming. It took place over a period of 6 months, from May 1st to October 31st, 2012 at the National Hospital University centre Koutoukou Hubert Maga in neonatal units and medical scanning unit. It covered 105 premature newborn, classified into the very prematurity and the moderate prematurity. Results: The very premature represented 35.2% and the moderate premature 64.8%, with an average of 33.5% and 1.9 of standard deviation. The average age when implementing ultrasonographic transfontanellar was 7.2 ± 4.6 days old. The lowest birth weight was observed in very premature with p = 0.0025. The nasopharyngeal septum pellucidum was the most found lesions in 46 preterm infants (43.8%) with no statistically significantly difference in two groups, followed by the ventricular haemorrhage found in 21 preterm infants accounting for 20%, and the grade 1 or sub-ependymal haemorrhage prevailed in 14 premature accounting for 66.7%, afterward periventricular leukomalacia in 4 premature infants and hydrocephalus in 2 premature. Conclusion: The nasopharyngeal septum pellucidum and the sub-ependymal ventricular haemorrhage were the predominant anomalies in premature infants followed by leukomalacia.

Currently,dual atomic catalysts(DACs)with neighboring active sites for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)still meet lots of challenges in the synthesis,especially the construction of atomic pairs of elements from different blocks of the periodic ***,a“rare earth(Ce)-metalloid(Se)”non-bonding heteronuclear diatomic electrocatalyst has been constructed for ORR by rational coordination and carbon support defect ***,the optimized Ce-Se diatomic catalysts(Ce-Se DAs/NC)displayed a half-wave potential of 0.886 V *** hydrogen electrode(RHE)and excellent stability,which surpass those of separate Ce or Se single atoms and most single/dual atomic catalysts ever *** addition,a primary zinc-air battery constructed using Ce-Se DAs/NC delivers a higher peak power density(209.2 mW·cm^(−2))and specific capacity(786.4 mAh·gZn^(−1))than state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts Pt/*** calculations reveal that the Ce-Se DAs/NC has improved the electroactivity of the Ce-N_(4)region due to the electron transfer towards the nearby Se specific activity(SA)***,the more electron-rich Se sites promote the adsorptions of key intermediates,which results in the optimal performances of ORR on Ce-Se DAs/*** work provides new perspectives on electronic structure modulations via non-bonded long-range coordination micro-environment engineering in DACs for efficient electrocatalysis.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Diabetes Mellitus in the Adult Population of Porto-Novo (Benin)

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of diabetes mellitus in the adult population of Porto-Novo. Methods: A cross-sectional study with random sampling, stratified cluster, was used. Fasting blood glucose was measured in capillary blood (Accu-Chek Active). Diabetes mellitus was defined as fasting glucose ≥ 1.26 g/L, and fasting hyperglycemia in non-diabetic fasting glucose ≥ 1.10 and < 1.26 g/L. Results: The survey involved 240 individuals. The sex ratio was 0.48. The mean age was 46 ± 13 years (range 25 - 80 years). The prevalence of hyperglycemic patients was 7.9%. The prevalence of diabetes was 6.7%, including 3.3% of unknown diabetes, half of diabetics. The prevalence of fasting hyperglycemia without diabetes was 1.2%. The risk factors for diabetes type 2 onset were a family history of diabetes (p = 0.017), older age (p = 0.003), hypertension (p = 0.005) and abdominal obesity (NCEP: p = 0.044;FID: p = 0.001). Conclusion: These high figures confirm the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Benin, documented in many developing countries.

Introduction: Therapeutic compliance in chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a major challenge for the prevention of this condition, which is both a non-communicable disease (NCD) and a complication of other NCDs. Non-adherence to treatment (NOT) is a factor in the poor prognosis of CKD in developing countries, particularly in Benin. The aim of this study was to evaluate therapeutic compliance (TC) and determine the factors associated with non-compliance in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing treatment at the departmental University Hospital of borgou and Alibori in Parakou (CHUD/B-A). Patients and Methods: This study was carried out in the Nephrology Department of CHUD/B-A. It was a cross-sectional, descriptive study with analytical aims that ran from December 25, 2022 to March 15, 2023 and covered data from 2017 to 2022. It involved 345 patient records meeting the diagnosis of CKD according to the KDIGO 2012 criteria. NOT was defined by a Girerd score evaluation greater than or equal to 3. Data processing and analysis were performed with R software version 4.3.0. Results: The mean age (SD) of patients was 50 years (±14.9). The prevalence of NOT was 57.1%. Potential predictors of non-adherence were: monthly revenue (p = 0.009), mode of admission (p = 0.001), phytotherapy (p = 0.040), traditional treatment (p = 0.049) and quantity of drugs (p = 0.042). Conclusion: Therapeutic compliance among chronic kidney patients still needs to be improved through awareness-raising sessions.

Purpose:To assess clinical results of the 9 mW/5.4 J/cm^(2) accelerated crosslinking(ACXL)in the treatment of progressive keratoconus(KC)over a span of 5 ***:The prospective open non-randomized interventional study(Siena Eye-Cross Study 2)included 156 eyes of 112 patients with early progressive KC undergoing the Epi-Off 9 mW/5.4 J/cm^(2) ACXL at the Siena Crosslinking centre,*** mean age was 18.05±5.6 *** 20-min treatments were performed using the New KXL I(Avedro,Waltham,USA),10 min of 0.1%HPMC Riboflavin soaking(VibeX Rapid,Avedro,Waltham,USA)and 10 min of continuous-light UV-A *** distance visual acuity(UDVA),corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA),Kmax,coma,minimum corneal thickness(MCT),surface asymmetry index(SAI),endothelial cell count(ECC)were measured,and corneal OCT ***:UDVA and CDVA improved significantly at the 3rd(P=0.028),Δ+0.17 Snellen lines and 6th postoperative month,respectively(P<0.001),Δ+0.23 Snellen *** improved at the 6th postoperative month(P=0.03),Δ−1.49 diopters from the baseline ***,coma aberration value improved significantly(P=0.004).A mild temporary haze was recorded in 14.77%of patients without affecting visual acuity and without persistent *** OCT revealed a mean demarcation line depth at 332.6±33.6μ***:The 5-year results of Epi-Off 9 mW/5.4 J/cm^(2) ACXL demonstrated statistically significant improvements in UCVA and CDVA,corneal curvature and corneal higher-order aberrations which confers a long-term stability for progressive *** on the results of the Siena Eye-Cross Study 2,the 9 mW/5.4 J/cm^(2) ACXL is a candidate to be the natural evolution of Epi-Off CXL treatment for the management of early progressive corneal ectasia,and thus optimize clinic workflow.

This palaeontological study focuses on the sedimentology and palaeofauna of Areia do Mastro locale in Cabo Espichel (Sesimbra, south of Lisbon). Two main geological formations are identified in Areia do Mastro: the Areia do Mastro Formation and the Papo-Seco Formation. We report herein the fossilized vertebrate and invertebrate remains from the basal deposits (marls, sands and gravels) of Papo-Seco Formation assigned to Lower Barremian (Lower Cretaceous). The sedimentological analysis and identified palaeofauna indicated a changing environment with important biological and ecological aspects. Extensive periods of sea level fluctuations and subsequent transgressive marine episodes had as a result the continental infralittoral internal platform to be gradually replaced by a lagoon, as revealed from the fossil remains embodied in the sediments during the formation of the afore mentioned sedimentary sequences.

Salinity-imposed limitations on plant growth are manifested through osmotic and ionic imbalances. However, because salinity-induced responses vary considerably among crop plants, monitoring of such responses at an early stage has relevance. In this study,physiological(seed germination, seed vigor index, root length, shoot length, fresh weight,dry weight) and biochemical attributes(osmoprotectants, K^+/Na^+ ratio) were analyzed for a time-course assessment of salt responses in Indian mustard(Brassica juncea L.) with an emphasis on early monitoring. The results showed strong correlations for total soluble sugars at germination phase(24 h), proline content in the seedling establishment phase(48 h) and various physiological parameters including seed vigor index(R^2= 0.901), shoot length(R^2= 0.982), and fresh weight(R^2= 0.980) at 72 h(adaptation under stress). In addition, transcriptional changes were observed under NaCl treatment for key genes belonging to the family of selective ion transporters(NHX, HKT) and abscisic acid synthesis(AAO-3). The status of mitochondrial respiration was also examined as a probe for salinity tolerance at an early stage. The results suggested that although all the analyzed parameters showed correlations(negative or positive) with salt stress magnitude, their critical response times differed, with most of the studied biochemical, physiological, or molecular markers providing valuable information only after radicle emergence, whereas mitochondrial respiration via alternative oxidase was useful for the early detection of salt responses.
