Background:Self‑medication among student nurses is the use of medicines without doctor’s *** practice is a global phenomenon and potential contributor to human resistance to most drugs,associated with different types of health *** the high knowledge on the complication of self‑medication,studies showed that most student nurses still practice self‑***:The aim of this study was to assess the reasons for increase in self‑medication and and find ways on how to curbing the menace among student nurses in the School of nursing,University of Benin Teaching Hospital,Edo State,*** and Methods:A descriptive cross‑sectional survey was conducted with stratified simple random sampling technique to select ninety student nurses from three different levels in the School of nursing,University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin City,Edo State.A self‑structured questionnaire with open‑type and Likert‑type scale questions used as instrument to assess the reasons for increase in self‑medication and the possible control *** collected were analyzed using tables,percentages,means,standard deviation,and t‑test for inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance,through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ***:The result showed the reasons for increase in self‑medication and how to reduce its *** also showed that the gender of the student nurses is statistically related to the reasons why they practice self‑medication(t=6.82,P≤0.001).Conclusion:Self‑medication can be reduced among student nurses by empowering the law enforcement agencies against self‑medication,improving the availability of essential and quality drugs in school clinics,and inclusion of all student nurses in National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS)program,where they can enjoy the benefit of paying only 10%of the treatment charges.

Exploring the Feasibility of Text Messaging Intervention in Intimate Partner Violence

Introduction: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is defined as controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship. Women between the ages 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of IPV. IPV costs US society at least $13.6 billion annually and is expected to rise to $15.6 billion by 2021. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of Text Messaging Intervention (TMI) in recognizing, responding and preventing IPV among college students. The research questions are: Will TMI 1) improve participant knowledge of warning signs of IPV? (Knowledge) and 2) improve participant confidence to intervene in IPV? (Confidence). Methods: A mixed methods design in data collection and data analysis was used. One-way ANOVA and Chi-square test were used to analyze quantitative data from the pre and post TMI survey. Results of the qualitative data analysis are included verbatim. Results: Results showed that knowledge level pre to post test increased from 2.00 ± 1.00 to 2.7 ± 0.48 (p < 0.001) and confidence level pre to post test increased from 2.89 ± 0.60 to 3.30 ± 0.68 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Further research is needed in evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of IPV prevention programs that uses mobile devices to create the best optimal health outcomes.

Fasciola worm and egg-derived antigens:Exploring their diagnostic potential for urogenital schistosomiasis in resource-limited endemic regions

Objective:To evaluate the immunodiagnostic potential of crude Fasciola gigantica-worm(FWA)and egg antigen(FEA)in detecting anti-Schistosoma(S.)haematobium antibodies in sera and urine ***:This is a cross-sectional diagnostic *** an indirect ELISA,antibodies against these antigens were assessed in samples from infected and non-infected individuals in both schistosomiasis endemic(NE)and non-endemic(NNE)areas,using microscopy as the diagnostic ***:FWA-sera exhibited excellent diagnostic accuracy with an area under the curve(AUC)of 0.957,a sensitivity of 93.75%,and a specificity of 85.42%for discriminating between infected and non-infected individuals in non-endemic ***-urine also demonstrated robust performance,achieving AUC>0.95,sensitivity>97.0%,and specificity>85.0%in both NE and NNE ***,***-specific antibody levels against FWA were significantly elevated in infected individuals in both endemic and non-endemic ***-sera exhibited outstanding diagnostic performance with sensitivity exceeding 90%and an AUC of 0.968 in non-endemic samples but not in ***:FWA-based ELISAs,applicable to both sera and urine,emerge as promising tools for *** diagnosis in resource-limited settings,offering advantages of high sensitivity and specificity with shared antigens with *** superior diagnostic metrics of urine samples suggest their potential as a non-invasive biological sample for diagnostic purposes.

Effect of Varicocelectomy on Gonadal Function among Patients Reporting with Sexual Dysfunction in Ghana

Background: Long-standing varicocele is often associated with testicular hypoxia and that might worsen Leydig cell function, a significant risk factor for hypogonadism. This may affect both the secretory and endocrine functions of the testis. This study aims to determine the effect of microsurgical sub-inguinal varicocelectomy on gonadal function among men reporting sexual dysfunction in Ghana. Methods: This was an intervention study conducted at the Tamale Teaching Hospital from September 2017 to August 2021. A total of 103 participants were randomized into two groups;the surgery group (n = 52) and the observed group (n = 51). Venous blood samples were collected at baseline, varicocelectomy was performed for the surgery group, and no intervention was given to the other. Blood samples were subsequently collected at 12-, 24-, 36-, and 48-month intervals for assay of serum total testosterone, FSH, and LH. The data were analyzed in GraphPad Prism (v8.0) at an alpha value of 0.05. Results: All the participants had varicocele and were aged between 55.0 to 69.0 years old. At the baseline of the study, all participants presented with sexual dysfunction but a significant improvement (p Conclusions: Microsurgical sub-inguinal varicocelectomy improved gonadal function among varicocele patients reporting sexual dysfunction. It is recommended to use this choice for similar patients;however, these findings should be verified by a multi-institutional study to provide more evidence for this choice.

Relationship between homocysteine level and prognosis of elderly patients with acute ischemic stroke treated by thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator

BACKGROUND Acute ischemic stroke(AIS)is mainly caused by cerebral blood flow disorders,which further leads to ischemic brain necrosis or *** role of homocysteine(Hcy),an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease,in the development of atherosclerosis is gradually ***,studies are still rare and little is known about the relationship of Hcy level with the *** To explore the relationship between Hcy level and prognosis in elderly patients with AIS after thrombolytic therapy with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator(rtPA).METHODS A total of 120 patients with acute ischemic stroke who were admitted to Jingzhou Central Hospital and underwent recombinant tissue plasminogen activator treatment were randomly selected from January 2017 to December *** were divided into two groups according to the level of Hcy,with 60 patients in each *** with Hcy≥18.54 umol/L were included into a high-level group and those with Hcy0.05).The Modified Rankin scale(MRS)scores were significantly higher in the high-level group than in the low-level group before and 1 h after the treatment(P0.05).NIHSS and MRS scores were positively correlated with the prognosis after thrombolytic therapy(P<0.05).CONCLUSION The level of Hcy is closely related to the prognosis of elderly patients with acute ischemic stroke,and after rtPA treatment,the prognosis of elderly patients is improved significantly.
