Assessing acceptance in mindfulness with direct-worded items:The development and initial validation of the Athlete Mindfulness Questionnaire

Purpose:The purpose of the current study was to develop and validate a sport-specific mindfulness measure,the Athlete Mindfulness Questionnaire(AMQ),through 5 related studies using 4 separate samples of Chinese athletes.The AMQ is a 3-factor measure designed to assess mindfulness that reflects present-moment attention,awareness,and acceptance in a sport context.Methods:In Study 1,an initial pool of items was generated based on previous literature,existing mindfulness scales,as well as interviews with and feedback from the athletes,coaches,and mindfulness experts.Initial support for the 3-factor structure of the AMQ was established via exploratory factor analysis in Study 2,and cross-validated through confirmatory factor analysis in Studies 3 and 4.In Study 5,a modified 3-factor AMQ with direct-worded acceptance items was examined in a fourth independent sample.Results:Convergent and concurrent validities of the acceptance subscale failed to be established in Studies 3 and 4 which may be due to the inattention and confusion of the athletes whilst interpreting the reverse-worded items.A modified 16-item AMQ in Study 5 displayed satisfactory model fit and acceptable internal consistencies.Most importantly,convergent and concurrent validities of the 16-item AMQ were supported.The3 subscales showed significant positive associations with mindfulness,flow,well-being,and positive affect and significant negative associations with experiential avoidance,burnout,and negative affect.Conclusion:The AMQ is a psychometrically sound measure of mindfulness in a sport context.The importance of using direct-worded acceptance items is discussed.

The contribution of small and large sensory afferents to postural control in patients with peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy(PN) is a multifarious disorder that is caused by damage to the peripheral nerves. Although the symptoms of PN vary with the etiology, most cases are characterized by impaired tactile and proprioceptive sensation that progresses in a distal to proximal manner. Balance also tends to deteriorate as the disorder becomes more severe, and those afflicted are substantially more likely to fall while walking compared with those who are healthy. Most patients with PN walk more cautiously and with greater stride variability than age-matched controls, but the majority of their falls occur when they must react to a perturbation such as a slippery or uneven surface. The purpose of this study was to first describe the role of somatosensory feedback in the control of posture and then discuss how that relationship is typically affected by the most common types of PN. A comprehensive review of the scientific literature was conducted using MEDLINE, and the relevant information was synthesized. The evidence indicates that the proprioceptive feedback that is conveyed primarily through larger type I afferents is important for postural control. However, the evidence indicates that the tactile feedback communicated through smaller type II afferents is particularly critical to the maintenance of balance. Many forms of PN often lead to chronic tactile desensitization in the soles of the feet and, although the central nervous system seems to adapt to this smaller type II afferent dysfunction by relying on more larger type I afferent reflex loops, the result is still decreased stability. We propose a model that is intended both to help explain the relationship between stability and the smaller type II afferent and the larger type I afferent feedback that may be impaired by PN and to assist in the development of pertinent rehabilitative interventions.

Comparison of daily physical activity parameters using objective methods between overweight and normal-weight children

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to determine if there were any differences in various aspects of physical activity such as energy expenditure, intensity, and type of activity between normal-weight and overweight boys.Methods: Children aged 9—12 years were recruited from 2 elementary schools located in different urban districts in Republic of Korea. The present study included 45 Korean boys, of which 19 were normal-weight and 26 were overweight. Daily physical activity was estimated over the same 1-week study period under free-living conditions using the doubly labeled water(DLW) method and a tri-axial accelerometer. Resting metabolic rate(RMR) was measured using the Douglas bag method and open-circuit indirect calorimetry. We calculated the physical activity level(PAL) as the total energy expenditure(TEE)/RMR.Results: PAL was not significantly different between the groups. In the accelerometer data, time spent in locomotive moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) was significantly lower in overweight boys than in normal-weight subjects, whereas other variables including non-locomotive activity did not differ between groups. In addition, among all participants, time spent in total locomotive activity was significantly associated with PAL. Time spent in locomotive MVPA was significantly associated with PAL.Conclusion: Overweight boys may be less physically active based on locomotive MVPA, which was positively related with PAL. Our findings suggest that the contribution of locomotive MVPA to the increase in PAL was relatively significant.

physical exercise protects muscle from accelerated aging induced by high-salt intake and muscle CG2196(salt)gene overexpression in Drosophila

Aging decreases muscle mass,strength,and functional capacity.High-salt stress seems to promote muscle aging and decrease lifespan.However,exercise delays muscle aging and increases longevity,and it may protect muscle from rapid aging induced by high-salt intake(HSI),but the molecular mechanisms are poorly understood.In this study,the flies were fed a high-salt diet and trained to exercise.Muscle CG2196(salt)gene and dSir2 gene were over-expressed by building mef2-gal4/UAS system.The results showed that both physical exercise and muscle dSir2 gene overexpression prevented HSI-induced and muscle salt overexpression-induced accelerated age-related decline of climbing index,climbing endurance,muscle NAD^(+)level,SOD activity level,dSir2 expression,and dFOXO expression,and they also prevented HSI-induced and muscle salt overexpression-induced accelerated age-related increase in muscle ROS level,MDA level,and salt gene expression.physical exercise improved lifespan decrease induced by HSI and muscle salt overexpression.Therefore,current results indicated that high-salt stress accelerated muscle aging by decreasing muscular NAD^(+)/dSir2/dFOXO pathway activity and increasing oxidative stress.physical exercise protected muscle from accelerated aging induced by high-salt stress through activating muscle NAD^(+)/dSir2/dFOXO pathway and enhancing muscle oxidation resistance.The combination of exercise and muscle dSir2 overexpression had the best protective effect on muscle aging and lifespan in flies.

Neural control of the soleus H-reflex correlates tothe laterality pattern in limbs

BACKGROUND： Previous studies have demonstrated the relationship of lower limb dominance with left- and right-handedness, supporting findings suggest that there is a role for peripheral factors in the neural control of movement. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the effect of laterality pattern on the neural mechanisms of motor control at the peripheral level. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A controlled observation experiment was performed at the Motor Diagnostics Laboratory of the Academy of physical education in Katowice, Poland, in June 2009. PARTICIPANTS： Twenty young male adults aged 21-23 years and presenting two laterality patterns in hand-foot combination （right handed-right footed and left handed-left footed groups） took part in the experiment. All participants were carefully screened to eliminate any neurological or muscle disease or trauma. METHODS： The experiment included a laterality evaluation and the motor evoked potentials of dominant and non-dominant limbs. Measures were done through the use of the Hoffmann-reflex （H-reflex） circuitry. The soleus H-reflex parameters elicited at rest in lower extremities were compared. The soleus H-reflex and the direct motor response were elicited in lower extremities of each participant in the same laboratory session. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Onset latencies and min-max amplitudes of the direct motor response and the H-reflex; the motor and sensory conduction velocities; and symmetry coefficients of response parameters. RESULTS： The analysis of symmetry coefficients of direct and late motor responses confirmed differences between two laterality patterns in amplitude and latency of the H-reflex as well as in a sensory conduction velocity （P 〈 0.05）, but not in direct motor response parameters. The amplitude of the H-reflex and the calculated sensory la afferent conduction velocity in the dominant lower extremity were significantly depressed in the right-sided group in comparison to the left-sided group （P = 0.001）. Impact of classic massage on blood pressure in patients with clinically diagnosed hypertension

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of classic massage on the changes in the values of blood pressure in women with previously diagnosed hypertension.METHODS: The study involved a group of ten women aged 60-68, who had previously been diagnosed with hypertension. Ten sessions of classic massage of the lower limbs were performed on the subjects. The massage sessions were conducted every day over ten consecutive days. Throughout the treatment, the subjects' blood pressure was measured using a manometer with a stethoscope TRO-CARDIO KIT 2 MONO. Their blood pressure was taken 1 min before the massage, as well as 1 min and5 min after each session. The study took place between March and June 2013 in Szpital Specjalistyczny im. J?drzeja ?niadeckiego(J?drzej ?niadecki Specialist Hospital) in Nowy S?cz, at the department of Internal Diseases.RESULTS: For ten consecutive days, the blood pressure values in the examined women were decreasing, with the exception of the diastolic blood pressure measured 5 min after the massage.CONCLUSION: The drops in blood pressure by several percent, noted in the majority of the female subjects over the time of the study. Classic massage might provide a safe supportive measure in pharmacologic treatment of hypertension.

It has been recognized that ginseng has anti-diabetic effects in skeletal muscle,but the mechanism has not been intensively investigated.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Korean red ginseng(Panax ginseng) supplementation on muscle glucose uptake in high-fat fed rats.Sixteen rats were randomly divided into two groups: a control group(CON,n=8) and a Korean red ginseng group(KRG,n=8).The KRG group ingested RG extract(1 g·kg 1,6 days/week) mixed in water for two weeks.After the two-week treatment,plasma lipid profiles,and glucose and insulin concentrations were measured.The triglyceride(TG) and glucose transporter 4(GLUT-4) contents were measured in the skeletal muscle and liver.The rate of glucose transport was determined under a submaximal insulin concentration during muscle incubation.Plasma FFA concentrations were significantly decreased in KRG(P<0.05).Liver and muscle triglyceride concentrations were also decreased in the KRG treatment group(P<0.05) compared to the CON group.In addition,resting plasma insulin and glucose levels were significantly lower after Korean red ginseng treatment(P<0.05).However,muscle glucose uptake was not affected by Korean red ginseng treatment,as evidenced by the rate of glucose transport in the epitorchealis muscle under submaximal insulin concentrations.These results suggest that while KRG supplementation could improve whole body insulin resistance and plasma lipid profiles,it is unlikely to have an effect on the insulin resistance of skeletal muscle,which is the major tissue responsible for plasma glucose handling.

Topography of spinal column and kidney receptors as illustrated by microsystem of the foot

OBJECTIVE:To test the accuracy of the distribution of reflective zones on the feet as proposed by William Fitzgerald using the spine and kidney receptors as reference points.METHODS:Spine and feet lengths were measured first along straight lines and then again,taking into consideration the anatomical curves.The spinal column was further measured with regard to its individual regions(cervical,thoracic,lumbar,sacrum-coccyx).Straight-line measurements were taken with the help of an anthropometer.Measurements that took into account all of the curves were performed with the opisometer(also known as a "map measurer").All the measurements were accurate to within 1 mm.The study subjects were a healthy,physically fit 16-year-old female student and a 53-year-old male office employee exposed to an average dose of physical exercise.RESULTS:The kidney receptor in the foot did not reflect onto the predetermined lumbar section of the spinal column as measured along the straight line or with regard to curves.Instead,in both subjects the kidney receptor reflected onto the thoracic spine.CONCLUSION:Te particular level of the spinal cord that innervates the given organ controls the distribution of receptors of individual organs in the foot.

Inhibitory Effect of Tetramethylpyrazine Preconditioning on Overload Training-Induced Myocardial Apoptosis in Rats

Objective： To investigate the inhibitory effect of tetramethylpyrazine （Tot） preconditioning on overload training-induced myocardial apoptosis in rats, and to explore cardioprotective mechanisms of Tot preconditioning. Methods： A total of 25 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups, including the control group （n=5）, the ovedoad training group （overload training for 8 weeks, n=10）, and the Tet preconditioning group （Tet preconditioning for 8 weeks before overload training, n=10）. After 8 weeks, cardiac structure and myocardial apoptosis were analyzed by histology, transmission electron microscopy, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling assay staining. The expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, Caspase-3, and Caspase-9 in myocardium were evaluated by immunohistochemical staining. Results： Overload training caused swelling, disorder, partial rupture, and necrosis of myocardial focal necrotic fibers, as well as mitochondrial vacuolization, cristae rupturing, and blurring. In contrast, Tet preconditioning attenuated the swelling of myocardial fibers, decreased the amount of ruptured fibers, and inhibited mitochondrial vacuolization, resulting in clear cristae. Overload training significantly increased Bax expression and decreased Bcl-2/Bax ratio when compared with the control group （P〈0.01）. Conversely, Tot preconditioning significantly increased Bcl-2 expression and the Bcl-2/Bax ratio as compared with the overload training group （P〈0.05）. Overload training dramatically increased the expressions of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 when compared with the control group （P〈0.05）. Following Tot preconditioning, the expression of Caspase-3 was significantly reduced compared with the overload training group （P〈0.05）, while Caspase-9 expression showed a slight decline （P〉0.05）. Conclusion： let preconditioning increased the expression of Bcl-2 and reduced the expression of Caspase-3, thereby attenuating overload training-induced myocardial apoptosis, protecting against overload t
