To the Editor:Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAD) arises from coronary atherosclerosis (CAS) plaque buildup,resulting in coronary stenosis (CS) and occlusion,ultimately causing myocardial ischemia,hypoxia,or necrosis.Studies showed that the high-grade CS may be an important predictor of ST segment elevation myocardial infarction in subsequent months.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)are playing irreplaceable roles in the construction of the future sustainable energy system.However,the insufficient performance of platinum(Pt)-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)hinders the overall efficiency of PEMFCs.Engineering the surface strain of catalysts is considered an effective way to tune their electronic structures and therefore optimize catalytic behavior.In this paper,insights into strain engineering for improving Pt-based catalysts toward ORR are elaborated in detail.First,recent advances in understanding the strain effects on ORR catalysts are comprehensively discussed.Then,strain engineering methodologies for adjusting Ptbased catalysts are comprehensively discussed.Finally,further information on the various challenges and potential prospects for strain modulation of Pt-based catalysts is provided.

As we are facing an aging society,anti-aging strategies have been pursued to reduce the negative impacts of aging and increase the health span of human beings.Gut microbiota has become a key factor in the anti-aging process.Modulation of gut microbiota by fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)to prevent frailty and unhealthy aging has been a hot topic of research.This narrative review summarizes the beneﬁts of FMT for health span and lifespan,brains,eyes,productive systems,bones,and others.The mechanisms of FMT in improving healthy aging are discussed.The increased beneﬁcial bacteria and decreased pathological bacteria decreased gut permeability and systemic inﬂammation,increased short-chain fatty acid(SCFA)and SCFA-producing bacteria,and other factors are listed as mechanisms of FMT to improve healthy aging.The points that need to be considered to ensure the optimal outcomes of FMT are also discussed,such as recipients’age,sex,genetic background,and gut microbiota after FMT.Although thisﬁeld is still in its infancy,it has shown that FMT has great potential to improve healthy aging.

BACKGROUND The relation between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular disorders(TMDs)is under debate;the management of TMD during orthodontic treatment has always been a challenge.If TMD symptoms occur during orthodontic treatment,an immediate pause of orthodontic adjustments is recommended;the treatment can resume when the symptoms are managed and stabilized.CASE SUMMARY This case report presents a patient(26-year-old,female)with angle class I,skeletal class II and TMDs.The treatment was a hybrid of clear aligners,fixed appliances and temporary anchorage devices(TADs).After 3 mo resting and treatment on her TMD,the patient’s TMD symptom alleviated,but her anterior occlusion displayed deep overbite.Therefore,the fixed appliances with TAD were used to correct the anterior deep-bite and level maxillary and mandibular deep curves.After the levelling,the patient showed dual bite with centric relation and maximum intercuspation discrepancy on her occlusion.After careful examination of temporomandibular joints(TMJ)position,the stable bite splint and Invisible Mandibular Advancement appliance were used to reconstruct her occlusion.Eventually,the improved facial appearance and relatively stable occlusion were achieved.The 1-year follow-up records showed there was no obvious change in TMJ morphology,and her occlusion was stable.CONCLUSION TMD screening and monitoring is of great clinical importance in the TMD susceptible patients.Hybrid treatment with clear aligners and fixed appliances and TADs is an effective treatment modality for the complex cases.

Magnesium-doped calcium silicate(CS)bioceramic scaffolds have unique advantages in mandibular defect repair;however,they lack antibacterial properties to cope with the complex oral microbiome.Herein,for the first time,the CS scaffold was functionally modified with a novel copper-containing polydopamine(PDA(Cu^(2+)))rapid deposition method,to construct internally modified(*P),externally modified(@PDA),and dually modified(*P@PDA)scaffolds.The morphology,degradation behavior,and mechanical properties of the obtained scaffolds were evaluated in vitro.The results showed that the CS*P@PDA had a unique micro-/nano-structural surface and appreciable mechanical resistance.During the prolonged immersion stage,the release of copper ions from the CS*P@PDA scaffolds was rapid in the early stage and exhibited long-term sustained release.The in vitro evaluation revealed that the release behavior of copper ions ascribed an excellent antibacterial effect to the CS*P@PDA,while the scaffolds retained good cytocompatibility with improved osteogenesis and angiogenesis effects.Finally,the PDA(Cu^(2+))-modified scaffolds showed effective early bone regeneration in a critical-size rabbit mandibular defect model.Overall,it was indicated that considerable antibacterial property along with the enhancement of alveolar bone regeneration can be imparted to the scaffold by the two-step PDA(Cu^(2+))modification,and the convenience and wide applicability of this technique make it a promising strategy to avoid bacterial infections on implants.

Clinical studies in COVID-related olfactory disorders:Review of an institutional experience

Objective:To share a single institutional experience with clinical research on COVID-related olfactory dysfunction(OD).Data Source/Method:Narrative review of published original data and ongoing clinical trials on COVID-related OD at Washington University from 2020 to 2023.Results:There were three new diagnostic-/patient-reported outcome measures developed and tested.We report five clinical trials of interventions for COVID-related olfactory disorders:combined Visual-Olfactory Training(VOLT)with patient-preferred scents versus standard olfactory training(VOLT trial),oral gabapentin versus placebo(Gabapentin for the Relief of Acquired Chemosensory Experience trial),nasal theophylline irrigations versus placebo(Smell Changes and Efficacy of Nasal Theophylline trial),stellate ganglion block(single-arm),and mindfulness-based stress reduction(MBSR)versus lifestyle intervention(MBSR trial).Conclusions:Initial intervention trials for COVID-related OD have shown potential for improving subjective and objective olfactory outcomes.However,there remains no gold standard treatment that definitively outperforms placebo in controlled trials.Therefore,continued investigation of novel therapeutic strategies for COVID-related OD is necessary to maximize olfactory outcomes for affected patients.

Wnt signaling are critical pathway involved in organ development, tumorigenesis, and cancer progression. WNT7A, a member of the Wnt family, remains poorly understood in terms of its role and the underlying molecular mechanisms it entails in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). According to the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), transcriptome sequencing data of HNSCC, the expression level of WNT7A in tumors was found to be higher than in adjacent normal tissues, which was validated using Real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Unexpectedly, overexpression of WNT7A did not activate the canonical Wnt-β-catenin pathway in HNSCC. Instead, our findings suggested that WNT7A potentially activated the FZD7/JAK1/STAT3 signaling pathway, leading to enhanced cell proliferation, self-renewal, and resistance to apoptosis. Furthermore, in a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumor model, high expression of WNT7A and phosphorylated STAT3 was observed, which positively correlated with tumor progression.These findings underscore the significance of WNT7A in HNSCC progression and propose the targeting of key molecules within the FZD7/JAK1/STAT3 pathway as a promising strategy for precise treatment of HNSCC.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between inter canine width (ICW) and inter alar width (IAW), inter commissural width (ICoW), and inter canthal distance (ICaD) in Bantu population. Materials and Methods: It was a pilot study included all participants who were aged at least 18 years, without a history of orthodontics treatment from Prosthodontics department, Faculty of Dental Medicine, University of Kinshasa. The Ethics committee of the National Center of Research for Dental Sciences in DR Congo approved the study protocol (CNRSB 1504.218). The participants medical records were obtained from the interview and dental examination. Nature of the study was explained with participant information sheet, and an informed consent of all participants was obtained. The inclusion criteria were no missing maxillary and mandibular teeth, no diastema, and no anterior restorations, 18 years old before enrollment in the study. The exclusion criteria were inability to meet the above requirements, pregnancy, and refusal to participate in the study. The inter-canine width (ICW), inter alar width (IAW), inter canthal distance (ICaD) and inter-commissural width (ICoW) of each participant were measured with a digital Vernier caliper (Mitutoyo, UK Ltd.,) (0.01 mm) three times and the average value was recorded. The inter canthal distance (ICaD) was measured without applying pressure by bringing the recording parts of the caliper just in contact with the medial angle. The inter alar width (IAW) was marked with a fine marked pencil on the widest outer surface of the alae of the nose on either side or width. Those two points were measured without applying pressure by bringing the recording parts of the caliper just in contact with the outer surface. The participant was told to stop breathing shortly to avoid any change in shape of the nose. The inter-commissural width (ICoW) was determined by measuring the maxillary lip vermilion from commissure to commissure without the application of pressure on the tissue in the re

BACKGROUND In recent years,the association between oral health and the risk of gastric cancer(GC)has gradually attracted increased interest.However,in terms of GC incidence,the association between oral health and GC incidence remains contro-versial.Periodontitis is reported to increase the risk of GC.However,some studies have shown that periodontitis has no effect on the risk of GC.Therefore,the present study aimed to assess whether there is a relationship between oral health and the risk of GC.AIM To assess whether there was a relationship between oral health and the risk of GC.METHODS Five databases were searched to find eligible studies from inception to April 10,2023.Newcastle-Ottawa Scale score was used to assess the quality of included studies.The quality of cohort studies and case-control studies were evaluated separately in this study.Incidence of GC were described by odds ratio(OR)and 95%confidence interval(CI).Funnel plot was used to represent the publication bias of included studies.We performed the data analysis by StataSE 16.RESULTS A total of 1431677 patients from twelve included studies were enrolled for data analysis in this study.According to our analysis,we found that the poor oral health was associated with higher risk of GC(OR=1.15,95%CI:1.02-1.29;I2=59.47%,P=0.000.01),gingivitis(OR=1.19,95%CI:0.71-1.67;I2=0.00%,P>0.01),dentures(OR=1.27,95%CI:0.63-1.19;I2=68.79%,P>0.01),or tooth brushing(OR=1.25,95%CI:0.78-1.71;I2=88.87%,P>0.01)had no influence on the risk of GC.However,patients with periodontitis(OR=1.13,95%CI:1.04-1.23;I2=0.00%,Poral health,especially periodontitis,had a higher risk of GC.Patients should be concerned about their oral health.Improving oral health might reduce the risk of GC.

The significant clinical feature of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw(BRONJ)is the exposure of the necrotic jaw.Other clinical manifestations include jaw pain,swelling,abscess,and skin fistula,which seriously affect the patients’life,and there is no radical cure.Thus,new methods need to be found to prevent the occurrence of BRONJ.Here,a novel nanoparticle,t FNA-KLT,was successfully synthesized by us,in which the nanoparticle tetrahedral framework nucleic acid(tFNA)was used for carrying angiogenic peptide,KLT,and then further enhanced angiogenesis.TFNA-KLT possessed the same characteristics as tFNA,such as simple synthesis,stable structure,and good biocompatibility.Meanwhile,tFNA enhanced the stability of KLT and carried more KLT to interact with endothelial cells.First,it was confirmed that tFNA-KLT had the superior angiogenic ability to tFNA and KLT both in vitro and in vivo.Then we apply tFNA-KLT to the prevention of BRONJ.The results showed that tFNA-KLT can effectively prevent the occurrence of BRONJ by accelerating angiogenesis.In summary,the prepared novel nanoparticle,tFNA-KLT,was firstly synthesized by us.It was also firstly confirmed by us that tFNA-KLT significantly enhanced angiogenesis and can effectively prevent the occurrence of BRONJ by accelerating angiogenesis,thus providing a new avenue for the prevention of BRONJ and a new choice for therapeutic angiogenesis.
