This paper is a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of a particular methodology for uncovering dialectal morpho-syntactic variation. It outlines the challenges facing linguists on a project to document morpho-syntactic variation in Afrikaans in the Cape Provinces of South Africa as well as some novel data on the typology of expletives in Afrikaans. South Africa’s linguistic situation is precarious, rapidly changing and driven by underdevelopment. This poses particular challenges to the organization of a comparative dialectological survey at practical and methodological levels that are perhaps slightly different to the issues faced in European contexts where the methodology was *** preliminary results have uncovered previously unknown variation with respect to expletives.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted educators to rethink educational practices,especially with regard to *** COVID-19 pandemic is a huge challenge to education systems around the *** Viewpoint offers guidance to teachers,institutional heads,and officials on addressing the *** study investigated technology use in teaching during the COVID-19 lockdown inMalaysia,focusing on technology-based teaching methods,modifications necessitated by this new teaching style,and challenges teachers faced when using *** purposive sampling,a qualitative study was undertaken with a sample of 10 english language teachers from Arabic schools in *** results indicated that a digital leap occurred in education during the COVID-19 lockdown because teachers had to quickly adapt to a more technology-based teaching *** challenges teachers faced included managing virtual classes,ensuring reliable Internet connections,overcoming a lack of preparedness and low digital competence,and dealing with students’mental *** changes in teaching methods have created new roles for teachers while also increasing their acceptance of e-learning and remote *** contribution of this research is to provide a holistic picture of remote education activities during the pandemic period to establish a linkage between the online teaching-learning process during the COVID-19 outbreak as to ensure the resumption of teaching-learning education as a normal course of procedure in the education *** the human suffering brought by the pandemic,the new norms of education during COVID-19 generally have some pockets of excellence to drive the education into the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The aim of this essay is threefold. In the first place, I shall discuss the transition from classical to neo-Gricean pragmatic theory of conversational implicature. Secondly, I shall present a neo-Gricean pragmatic theory of conversational implicature, focusing on the bipartite system developed by Laurence Horn and the tripartite system advanced by Stephen Levinson. Thirdly and finally, I shall point to a number of directions in which the neo-Gricean pragmatic theory may be developed in the future, including the debate on what is said versus what is conversationally implicated, the interdigitation between neo-Gricean pragmatic principles and bidirectional Optimality theory, the revised neo-Gricean pragmatic theory of anaphora, and the neo-Gricean psycho-pragmatic experimental work.

Based on the romantic literary theory,this paper studies the signs of the modern romantic literature. Scholars have tried to connect the issues of romanticism with those of modernity since the climax of the post - modernist cultural studies. With the increasingly deep discussion of post - modernism,people happen to find that romanticism revived quietly in the so - called post - modernist aesthetic purpose and interest. It is not difficult to find in all sorts of discussions of post - modernism the trace of many problems and the thinking styles where romanticism has been involved. The seemingly same source lies in the problems of modernity, which has aroused widespread concerns from the academia. In this paper,the author believes that romantic literature focuses on portraying typical characters to express their emotional tendency. Modernity,especially aesthetic modernity,expands a new vision for us to re - examine romanticism. In other words,to study the signs of modernity from romanticism can blaze a new path for the study of modernity.

Laryngeal Vibratory Behavior in Traditional Noh Singing

The phonation of Noh, a traditional Japanese style of singing, was investigated using electroglot- tographic and acoustical analyses. The dynamics of the laryngeal vibratory behaviors were analyzed for the singing voice of the Noh play compared with natural speech based on the Electroglottography （EGG） pa- rameters, EGG waveform, spectrum, and spectrogram. The result shows that Noh singing is characterized by low open quotient and high speed quotient. Three types of phonations are used in the singing with pressed, Vocal-Ventricular Mode （WM）, and growl voices. It was hypothesized that the period doubling ob- served in the EGG signal was reflective of WM, which was caused by the phase difference in the vocal and ventricular fold oscillations, while the damped peak amplitude in every other cycle in the EGG signal was the result of the oscillations of the aryepiglottic folds at a frequency of half of the fundamental frequency. Sub- harmonics generated by the supraglottal oscillations add unique timbre to the sounds. The results suggest that the combination of phonation types is the key factor in generating their peculiar voice qualities.

Cross-cultural differences have often been seen as an element contributing to the variations in speech acts and this has affected the differences in interpretations of meanings. Each individual contributes to this difference as a result of his/her variation in upbringing. His/her values, beliefs, traditions, norms and standards are greatly influenced by his/her culture. Cultural differences are not only seen through tangible artifacts and daily practices, but also in the articulation of thoughts. This paper will present findings from the analysis of ＂lunch-talks＂ data involving four professional Malaysian women from the two dominant ethnic communities in Malaysia： Malay and Chinese. The ＂lunch-talks＂ are free flowing semi-formal discourse events with topics ranging from family to politics to work-related issues. Data were recorded with the informants＇ consent and are then transcribed. Our findings indicate that Malaysian women professionals are open, direct and forward in their talk as a result of the influence of cultural and religious conditioning and conditions. With higher education and wider exposure, they are also less inhibited by traditional norms. It would seem that educational exposure and the level of experience play a role in shifting Malaysian women from being demure to being more forward. Nevertheless, some remnants of traditional, cultural and religious values are interlaced within the forwardness. This study will provide some insights into the role of culture in communication. Evidence is drawn from the way the two ethnic groups perceive, interpret, and maintain respect for each other.
