Associative cultural landscape approach to interpreting traditional ecological wisdom:A case of Inuit habitat

Global climate change and the accelerated melting of glaciers have raised concerns about the ability to manage ice-snow ***,human ancestors have mastered the ecological wisdom of working with ice-snow environments,but the phenomenon has not yet been articulated in cultural landscape methodologies that emphasize“nature-culture relevance”.The challenging living environment often compels indigenous people to form a strong bond with their surroundings,leading to the creation of long-term ecological wisdom through synergistic relationships with the *** ecological environment is conceptualized as a cognitive space in the form of the landscape,with which the aboriginal community norms and individual spirits continually *** interactions generate numerous non-material cultural evidences,such as culture,art,religion,and other ideological aspects of the *** evidences symbolize the intellectual outcome of the relationship between humans and the landscape,and they create the“spiritual relevance”through personification and *** aim of the study is to explore the traditional ecological wisdom of the Inuit people who live in the harsh Arctic,and analyze the Inuit’s interaction with the landscape through the lens of“associative cultural landscape”,and decode the survival experience that the Inuit have accumulated through their long-term synergy with the Arctic *** findings focus on the synergy between the Inuit and the ice-snow landscape,examining the knowledge and ecological wisdom that the Inuit acquire from the ice-snow *** goal is to develop a perspective of the ecological environment from the viewpoint of aboriginal people and establish a methodology,model,and framework for“associative cultural landscape”that incorporates ethnic non-material cultural *** the results,a total of nine models for interpreting traditional Inuit ecological wisdom are generated based on the“diamond

Critics have pointed at new technologies as cutprits in the decline of civic life, neighboring and social capital construction in Western societies. When applied to community design and ptanning processes, technologies can empower residents to actively engage in decision-making, foster connections across social groups, with positive consequences on life and sociatization in public spaces. What kind of participation do technotogies foster？ And is it the kind that bridges social and ideotogical divides？ The 2012 community design process for Hawthorne Park in Medford, Oregon illustrates many of the challenges and opportunities connected to the use of new technologies in design. In the process, technologies were instrumental in enlisting a larger-than-usual number of residents to participate in the design of the park. Blogs and online questionnaires were successful in gathering people＇s thoughts on the design choices being made, but also favored a limited, intermittent form of engagement. The results are synthesized in principles for the successful integration of web-based technologies in future community design efforts： adaptability, fuji participation, nuanced participation and the need for links to the physical realm.

ABSTRACT: China began to introduce market principles and establish price mechanism to better manage land and improve land use efficiency in the late 1980s. Since then, land markets begin to emerge. A benchmark land price system, providing guidelines for land use rights selling and transferring, was established in order to overcome lack of market data and experiences in land transaction. The benchmark prices of land use rights are determined by land use, land use density (floor-land ratio), land grades, land improvement, and tenant resettlement costs. This paper first conducts a formal analysis based on modern urban economic theory. The formal model provides a theoretical foundation in which the benchmark land price system is assessed and evaluated in terms of land use and urban development. The paper then concludes that the benchmark price system has two theoretical problems. One is associated with the fact that floor-land ratio plays an important role in land price determination whereas the theory suggests the other way around. That is, floor-land ratio depends on land prices. The other problem is that the benchmark land price system does not provide adequate room for the substitution between land and capital inputs. The substitution is a key in achieving land use efficiency in land markets and urban development process. It is concluded that the practice of the benchmark land price system is at odd with reforms that aim to introduce market principles and mechanism to guide resource uses. Therefore, it is recommended that further land policy reform should be taken.

College campuses pride themselves in being leaders in promoting innovation in both technical and theoretical aspects of all fields of study, including sustainability. The drive for sustainability in higher education has become institutionalized in many college campuses in the form of offices of sustainability, as well as membership in the American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). In parallel, but not always in concert, are more grass-roots efforts by students to promote sustainability through recycling programs, urban agriculture, and similar initiatives. Students are often frustrated between the classroom lessons they learn about sustainability and the slow adoption of sustainable practices in the “real-world,” including on campus. In order to address this issue, faculty have begun to engage students in the sustainability challenges facing their own campuses. The Journal of Green Building showcases these projects in the New Directions in Teaching and Research section of the journal. As part of this series, this article will highlight a course at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in which students engage in green infrastructure planning projects for the campus.

In China,public transport has long been regarded as a countermeasure to traffic congestion,air pollution,and extensive energy consumption,*** has shown that the choice of public transport is correlated with physical factors(i.e.,built environment factors) and non-physical factors(e.g.,socioeconomic conditions).This study takes Downtown Nanjing,a major urban area in Eastern China as its study area and uses a multiple linear regression model to identify the factors influencing the choice of public transport,in order to inform future planning,design,and *** result shows that,with a confidence level of 99%: high repetition coefficient of public transport lines,short distance to the nearest rail transit station,and a high proportion of transit pass holders can promote using public *** land use,a high proportion of low-income travelers,and high density of four(and more)-way intersections can promote the choice of public transport when confidence level drops to 90%.Based on the findings,this study makes suggestions for increasing the use of public transport,including improving the coverage of rail transit stations and repetition coefficient of public transport lines,promoting public transport passes and mixed land use,*** findings from this study provide meaningful information for planners and decision-makers to build transit-oriented and sustainable cities.

This paper reports experiences from three workshops dealing with soundscape as a noise treatment approach in landscape architecture. The workshops were conducted between 2012 and 2016 in different contexts, for different purposes and with different participants. The paper describes the workshop approach employed and analyzes the proposals made by workshop participants to employ ＂soundscape action＂ as an operational tool in landscape architecture projects. Through a process of ＇keywording＇ and clustering proposals from the workshops, 22 pragmatic soundscape actions emerged and are described on a generat level. The paper then discusses the outcomes and experiences from the workshops and retates this to landscape architecture practice.

Understanding children's active school commute, independent mobility, and physical activity in Austin, Texas, USA: Roles of physical environments

Walking to/from school(WTS) is an important form of habitual and healthful physical activity(PA). This cross-sectional study examined the multilevel correlates of WTS among elementary school children in Austin, Texas, and whether WTS and neighborhood environmental factors were associated with increased independent mobility and PA. A parent survey was conducted, and geographic information systems were used to calculate the shortest home-to-school distance. Binary logistic regressions were used to predict the outcomes. Distance, physical barriers(e.g., highway/freeway/busy roads),neighborhood environmental quality, and traffic concerns were significant predictors for WTS. Having a school within the neighborhood and unsupervised play increased the likelihood of independent travel to non-school destinations. Sidewalk availability and condition, having a friend's/relative's house in the neighborhood that the child visits frequently, and independent travel to non-school destinations predicted an increased likelihood of unsupervised outdoor play. Stranger danger reduced the likelihood of both independent travel and unsupervised play. Easy access to services and unsupervised play increased the likelihood of meeting PA guidelines. This study identified modifiable environmental predictors of WTS, independent mobility, and meeting PA guidelines. Future PA promotion should consider strategies that can encourage not only WTS but also independent travel to non-school destinations and unsupervised outdoor play.

As China's urbanization accelerates, there is an increasing demand for urban-rural planning at both national and local levels, making it become an independent fi rst-level discipline. Currently in China, the teaching and research system of urban-rural planning is facing some problems like the uneven education level among various universities, improper knowledge system that hardly meets the actual social demands, and insufficient theoretical research. This article argues that, in order to train qualif ied planners capable of satisfying socio-economic development and urbanrural construction, the teaching and research system of urban-rural planning should be practice-oriented and meet social needs. The healthy development of urban-rural planning discipline should be based on the mutual promotion of teaching and research system.
