Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)plays an important role in precision medicine that is hampered by the lack of contrast agents with high efficiency and the ability to translate diagnostic accuracy into therapeutic ***,we demonstrate a DNA-based MRI probe that overcomes previous single-mode enhancement and provides a mechanism of action for aggregationinduced dual-modal MRI signal enhancement.A facile method is developed to produce aggregated T_(1)/T_(2)dual-modal NaGdF_(4):Dy@PDA-DNA(PDA=polydopamine)MRI *** aggregated,this probe can further amplify MRI signal intensity and exhibit improved geometrical and positional stability in *** performance of the NaGdF_(4):Dy@PDA-DNA MRI probe toward MRI-guided preoperative planning and visualization-guided surgery is verified using an orthotopic tumor-bearing mouse *** result shows that the rapid metabolism of the degraded probe leads to the mitigation of long-term toxic ***,the developed high-performance MRI probe is of great significance for enhancing MRI diagnostic accuracy into precision medical therapeutic interventions.

AIM: To investigate the anti-neoplastic effects of MK615, an extract from the japanese apricot (Prunus mume), against colon cancer cells. METHODS: Three colon cancer cell lines, SW480, COLO, and WiDr, were cultured with MK615. Growth inhibition was evaluated by cell proliferation assay and killing activity was determined by lactate dehydrogenase assay. Induction of apoptosis was evaluated by annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry. Morphological changes were studied by light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8. RESULTS: MK615 inhibited growth and lysed SW480, COLO and WiDr cells in a dose-dependent manner. Annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry showed that MK615 induced apoptosis after 6 h incubation, at which point the occurrence of apoptotic cells was 68.0%, 65.7% and 64.7% for SW480, COLO, and WiDr cells, respectively. Light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8 revealed that MK615 induced massive cytoplasmic vacuoles (autophagosomes) in all three cell lines. CONCLUSION: MK615 has an anti-neoplastic effect against colon cancer cells. The effect may be exerted by induction of apoptosis and autophagy.

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters(MNCs),as a potential type of photoacoustic(PA)contrast agent,are limited in application due to their low PA conversion efficiency(PACE).Here,with hydrophilic Au25SR18(SR=thiolate)as model NCs,we present a result that weakly polar solvent induces aggregation,which effectively enhances PA intensity and *** PA intensity and PACE are highly dependent on the degree of aggregation,while the aggregation-enhanced PA intensity(AEPA)positively correlates to the protected *** an AEPA phenomenon indicates that aggregation actually accelerates the intramolecular motion of Au NCs,and enlarges the proportion of excited state energy dissipated through vibrational *** result conflicts with the restriction of intramolecular motion mechanism of aggregation-induced *** experiments show that the increased energy of AEPA originates from the aggregation inhibiting the intermolecular energy transfer from excited Au NCs to their surrounding medium molecules,including solvent molecule and dissolved oxygen,rather than restricting radiative *** study develops a new strategy for enhancing the PA intensity of Au NCs,and contributes to a deeper understanding of the origin of the PA signal and the excited state energy dissipation processes for MNCs.

Here, we report our experience with a case of severe biliary bleeding due to a hepatic arterial pseudoaneurysm that had developed 1 year after endoscopic biliary plastic stent insertion. The patient, a 78-year-old woman, presented with hematemesis and obstructive jaundice. Ruptured hepatic arterial pseudoaneurysm was diagnosed, which was suspected to have been caused by long-term placement of an endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage(ERBD) stent. This episode of biliary bleeding was successfully treated by transarterial embolization(TAE). Pseudoaneurysm leading to hemobilia is a rare but potentially fatal complication in patients with long-term placement of ERBD. TAE is a minimally invasive procedure that offers effective treatment for biliary bleeding.

Efficacy of japanese traditional(Kampo) medicine for treating chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: A retrospective case series study

AIM To investigate japanese traditional(Kampo) medicine's effectiveness on cancer chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy(CIPN), we carried out this retrospective *** By searching our outpatient database of 3154 patients who consulted our outpatient clinic of japanese-Oriental(Kampo) Medicine at Chiba University Hospital from November 2005 to December 2010, a total of 281 patients diagnosed with cancer were identified. Twentyfour patients out of the 281 patients identified met the following three conditions and were eligible for further investigation of the effectiveness of Kampo treatment: At least one course of cancer chemotherapy had been administered; numbness and pain appeared after the chemotherapy; and CIPN was diagnosed before they were given Kampo *** The 24 patients included 6 males and 18 females and ranged in age from 39 to 86(mean 61.2 ± 11.5) years old. Kampo formulas were individually chosen by Kampo expert doctors based on Kampo-specific diagnostics. Beneficial outcomes were obtained by Kampo treatment in 20 out of the 24 cases(83.3%). Nine out 20 cases had a major response(the numbness and pain showed improvement or reduction by 50% or more), with 7 of 9 cases showing a more than 70% symptom reduction. Eleven out of 20 cases showed a minor response(less than 50% symptom reduction), and 4 out of the 24 cases had no beneficial response. The most frequently used formula was goshajinkigan(GJG), followed by hachimijiogan(HJG) and keishibukuryogan. Thirteen of the 24 cases(54.2%) were prescribed aconite rootcontaining formulas including GJG and HJG. Aconite root has "warming" effects and ameliorates pain and numbness; 21 out of 24 cases(87.5%) in total used warming formulas such as aconite root-containing formulas to reduce *** Our current study suggested that Kampo formulas chosen based on Kampo-specific diagnostics could be for treating CIPN that is refractory to conventional medicine.

AIM: To investigate the effects of japanese apricot(JA) consumption on gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)-related ***: Participants included individuals living in Minabe-cho,a well-known JA-growing region,who received specific medical check-ups by the local community health service in ***-related symptoms were examined in 1303 japanese individuals using a validated questionnaire,the Frequency Scale for Symptoms of GERD(FSSG),which consists of 7 questions associated with acid reflux symptoms and 5 questions asking about gastrointestinal dysmotility *** question was answered using a 4-point scale,with higher scores indicating more severe GERDrelated *** were divided into two groups according to their intake of dried and pickled JA: daily intake(≥ 1 JA daily)(392 subjects) and none oroccasional intake(< 1 JA daily)(911 subjects).FSSG scores were compared between subjects who consumed JA daily and those who did ***,subjects were stratified by age,gender and Helicobacter pylori(***) status for ***: Those who ate JA daily were significantly older than those who did not(60.6 ± 10.5 years vs 56.0 ± 11.0 years,P < 0.001).Total FSSG scores were significantly lower in subjects with daily JA intake than in those with none or only occasional intake(2.13 ± 3.14 vs 2.70 ± 3.82,P = 0.005).In particular,subjects who consumed JA daily showed significantly improved FSSG dysmotility scores compared with subjects who did not(1.05 ± 1.58 vs 1.46 ± 2.11,P < 0.001).In contrast,the FSSG reflux score did not differ between subjects with and without daily intake of JA(1.08 ± 1.90 vs 1.24 ± 2.11,P = 0.177).Subanalysis indicated that improvement in dysmotility by JA intake was specifically observed in non-elderly(1.24 ± 1.68 vs 1.62 ± 2.22,P = 0.005) and ***-negative subjects(0.99 ± 1.58 vs 1.57 ± 2.06,P < 0.001).GERD patients(total FSSG score ≥ 8) were less frequently observed among subjects with daily intake of JA as
