Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) is a rare post-infectious neurological syndrome for which an effective treatment strategy has not been established. Here, we report a case of a 71-year-old male who suffered from an upper respiratory tract infection, and 7 days later, developed numbness of the bilateral upper and lower limbs, unsteady gait and dysarthria. Brain magnetic resonance imaging was normal, nerve conduction study and cerebral spinal fluid analysis were nonspecific. Based on the clinical features, we tentatively diagnosed Guillain-Barré syndrome and started immunoadsorption plasmapheresis. However, consciousness progressively declined to coma level within 10 days. Electroencephalogram showed diffuse slowing, and auditory evoked brainstem response (ABR) demonstrated absence of waves II, III and V. Serum anti-GQ1b IgG autoantibody and anti-GM1b IgG autoantibody were negative. Subsequently, we diagnosed BBE, and clinical symptoms resolved after treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin and methyllprednisolone. On day 62, neurological symptoms were remarkably alleviated with an improvement in ABR. Our observations suggest that immunoadsorption plasmapheresis should be used only when anti-ganglioside antibodies are detected. Combination therapy with intravenous immunoglobulin and methylprednisolone or plasma exchange?is recommended as initial therapy.

Objective: To investigate the correlation of serum Hcy metabolism with pro-inflammatory factors, chemokines and oxidative stress response in patients with senile dementia. Methods:A total of 50 patients who were diagnosed with senile dementia in our hospital between August 2012 and June 2016 were selected as the senile dementia group, and 50 elderly patients who underwent physical examination in this hospital during the same period were selected as normal control group. The differences in serum levels of Hcy, pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and oxidative stress indexes were compared between the two groups, and Pearson test was adopted to assess the correlation between serum Hcy level and illness. Results: Serum Hcy level of senile dementia group was higher than that of control group;serum pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α and CRP levels were higher than those of control group;serum chemokines MCP-1, CCL2 and RANTES levels were higher than those of control group;serum oxidative stress indexes ROS, MDA and 4-HNE contents were higher than those of control group. Pearson test showed that the serum Hcy level in patients with senile dementia was positively correlated with the levels of pro-inflammatory factors, chemokines and oxidative stress indexes. Conclusions: The serum Hcy metabolism disorder in patients with senile dementia is closely related to the inflammatory response and oxidative stress response.

Itch（pruritus） is one of the most disabling syndromes in patients suffering from skin, liver, or kidney diseases. Our previous study highlighted a key role of oxidative stress in acute itch. Here, we evaluated the effects of antioxidants in mouse models of acute and chronic itch and explored the potential mechanisms. The effects of systemic administration of the antioxidants N-acetyl-Lcysteine（NAC） and N-tert-butyl-a-phenylnitrone（PBN）were determined by behavioral tests in mouse models of acute itch induced by compound 48/80 or chloroquine, and chronic itch by treatment with a mixture of acetonediethyl-ether-water. We found that systemic administration of NAC or PBN significantly alleviated compound 48/80-and chloroquine-induced acute itch in a dose-dependent manner, attenuated dry skin-induced chronic itch, and suppressed oxidative stress in the affected *** significantly decreased the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species directly induced by compound 48/80 and chloroquine in the cultured dorsal root ganglia-derived cell line ND7-23. Finally, the antioxidants remarkably inhibited the compound 48/80-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase in the spinal cord. These results indicated that oxidative stress plays a critical role in acute and chronic itch in the periphery and spinal cord and antioxidant treatment may be a promising strategy for anti-itch therapy.

Oxidative stress is one of the underlying causes of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Because of its antioxidant effect, we hypothesize that green tea consumption (3 cups daily for 3 months) would improve antioxidant status and reduces oxidative damage in Parkinson’s disease. Fifteen subjects who were within the first five years of PD, on stable PD medication, and not regular green tea consumers were recruited. Iron status, oxidative stress and PD status were evaluated before and after 3 months of green tea consumption. Hemoglobin, serum iron, iron saturation and ferritin concentrations were used to assess iron status. Antioxidant enzymes including catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were measured to determine antioxidant status. Lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyls were measured as oxidative damage markers. There were no changes in total motor scores of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), PDQ-39 total scores and various iron status markers after 3 months. Catalase (p < 0.05) and SOD activities (p < 0.005) were increased significantly indicating an improvement of antioxidant status. Both lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyls decreased by ~52% (p < 0.01) with green tea consumption, indicating less oxidative stress. In conclusion, 3 cups of green tea consumption for 3 months can improve antioxidant status and reduce oxidative damage in PD patients. Further studies are needed to determine if these changes result in slowing the disease progression.

Objective:This observational cohort pilot study aimed to evaluate the effects of the acupuncture methods,Jiu Cang Zhen(JCZ)and Huang Guan(HG),on changes in headache intensity in an inpatient,multimodal Zurzach Headache Programme(ZHP).Methods:Study participants consisted of patients diagnosed with chronic headache disorder(headache ds,30 days per month)or daily persistent *** patients received conventional therapies with active and passive *** patient group was treated with JCZ and HG acupuncture methods,receiving a total of six to eight acupuncture sessions of 50 to 60 minutes each,during a 3–4-week multimodal ZHP at the RehaClinic Bad *** intensity was quantified using a Numerical Rating Scale(NRS)before and after each acupuncture therapy ***:Ten patients were recruited,six women and four men,with a mean age of 41.7(standard deviation,[SD]=13.9).A reduction in headache intensity was reported by all patients in each of the *** average NRS for pain was 4.21(SD=1.44)before acupuncture and 1.24(SD=0.93)after acupuncture(means first by number of sessions,then per n=10 patients).This resulted in a mean difference of 2.97(SD=1.04),corresponding to a standardized response mean of 2.85(95%confidence interval:2.11–3.60,one-tailed P<0.001),meaning there was a large ***:This pilot study shows that JCZ and HG are suitable acupuncture methods for reducing headache intensity in the treatment of headaches.A comparison with the conventional classical acupuncture methods from the acupuncture textbook for traditional Chinese medicine students in China,exploration with a larger patient group,and prolonged monitoring of pain behavior could be foci of follow-up investigations.

Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells(MSCs) are multipotent cells under consideration as a potential new therapy for a variety of inflammatory diseases including certain neurological disorders. It is generally thought that the efficacy of cell therapy in attenuating damage after ischemia, inflammation, or injury depends on the quantity of transplanted cells recruited to the target tissue. However, only a small number of systematically infused MSCs can effectively migrate to target sites, which significantly decreases the efficacy of exogenous cell-based therapy. In this review, we discuss specific factors influencing MSC migration, and summarize current strategies that effectively promote the motility of MSCs. In addition, we describe several protocols to improve the migration of stromal cells into the nervous system and, therefore,enhance the efficiency of engraftment as means of treating neurological disorders.
