Erosion wear at the bend of pipe during tailings slurry transportation:Numerical study considering inlet velocity,particle size and bend angle

Pipeline hydraulic transport is a highly efficient and low energy-consumption method for transporting solids and is commonly used for tailing slurry transport in the mining industry.Erosion wear(EW)remains the main cause of failure in tailings slurry pipeline systems,particularly at bends.EW is a complex phenomenon influenced by numerous factors,but research in this area has been limited.This study performs numerical simulations of slurry transport at the bend by combining computational fluid dynamics and fluid particle tracking using a wear model.Based on the validation of the feasibility of the model,this work focuses on the effects of coupled inlet velocity(IV)ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 m·s^(-1),particle size(PS)ranging from 50 to 650μm,and bend angle(BA)ranging from 45°to 90°on EW at the bend in terms of particle kinetic energy and incidence angle.The results show that the maximum EW rate of the slurry at the bend increases exponentially with IV and PS and first increases and then decreases with the increase in BA with the inflection point at 60°within these parameter ranges.Further comprehensive analysis reveals that the sensitivity level of the three factors to the maximum EW rate is PS>IV>BA,and when IV is 3.0 m/s,PS is 650μm,and BA is 60°,the bend EW is the most severe,and the maximum EW rate is 5.68×10^(-6)kg·m^(-2)·s^(-1).In addition,When PS is below or equal to 450μm,the maximum EW position is mainly at the outlet of the bend.When PS is greater than 450μm,the maximum EW position shifts toward the center of the bend with the increase in BA.Therefore,EW at the bend can be reduced in practice by reducing IV as much as possible and using small particles.

Effects of cannabinoid receptor type 2 on endogenous myocardial regeneration by activating cardiac progenitor cells in mouse infarcted heart

Cannabinoid receptor type 2(CB2)activation is recently reported to promote proliferation of some types of resident stem cells(e.g.,hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell or neural progenitor cell).Resident cardiac progenitor cell(CPC)activation and proliferation are crucial for endogenous cardiac regeneration and cardiac repair after myocardial infarction(MI).This study aims to explore the role and possible mechanisms of CB2receptor activation in enhancing myocardial repair.Our results revealed that CB2receptor agonist AM1241 can significantly increase CPCs by c-kit and Runx1 staining in ischemic myocardium as well as improve cardiomyocyte proliferation.AM1241 also decreased serum levels of MDA,TNF-αand IL-6 after MI.In addition,AM1241 can ameliorate left ventricular ejection fraction and fractional shortening,and reduce fibrosis.Moreover,AM1241 treatment markedly increased p-Akt and HO-1 expression,and promoted Nrf-2 nuclear translocation.However,PI3K inhibitor wortmannin eliminated these cardioprotective roles of AM1241.In conclusion,AM1241 could induce myocardial regeneration and improve cardiac function,which might be associated with PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 signaling pathway activation.Our findings may provide a promising strategy for cardiac endogenous regeneration after MI.

Enterocolic phlebitis:a rare cause of bowel ischemia and review of the literature

Enterocolic phlebitis(EP)is a rare cause of bowel ischemia due to isolated venulitis of the bowel wall and mesentery without arterial involvement.EP is often misdiagnosed as inﬂammatory bowel disease,carcinoma,or diverticulitis due to non-speciﬁc symptoms as well as non-speciﬁc clinical and radiologicalﬁndings.While unresponsive to pharmacotherapy,surgical resection of the affected bowel appears to be the only successful therapy with a very low recurrence rate.Etiology of EP remains unknown.We report a case of EP with rare presentation in the left hemicolon and unusual histologicalﬁndings emphasizing the heterogeneity of this cause of enterocolic ischemia.The review and comparison of the three enti-ties—EP,mesenteric inﬂammatory veno-occlusive disease(MIVOD),and idiopathic myointimal hyperplasia of mesenteric veins(IMHMV),all describing patterns of bowel ischemia due to isolated pathology of mesenteric veins—reveal that the current terminology is unclear.EP and MIVOD are very similar and may be considered the same disease.IMHMV,though,differs in localization,symptom duration,and histologicalﬁndings but also shares features with EP and MIVOD.Further studies and harmonized terminology are inevitable for better understanding of the disease,prevention of unnecessary pharmacotherapy,and reduction in time to diagnosis.

Evaluation of the prognostic ability of serum uric acid for elderly acute coronary syndrome patients with diabetes mellitus:a prospective cohort study

Objective:This study evaluated the prognostic power of serum uric acid(UA)in predicting adverse events in elderly acute coronary syndrome(ACS)patients with diabetes mellitus(DM).Methods:The analysis involved 718 ACS patients>80 years old whose general clinical data and baseline blood biochemical indicators were collected prospectively from January 2006 to December 2012.These patients were classified into two groups based on DM status,and then followed up after discharge.The Kaplan-Meier method was used for major adverse cardiac event(MACE)rates and all-cause mortality.Multivariate Cox regression was performed to analyze the relationship between UA level and long-term clinical prognosis.Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves were analyzed to predict the cutoff value of UA in elderly ACS patients with DM.There were 242 and 476 patients in the DM and non-DM(NDM)groups,respectively,and the follow-up time after discharge was 40‒120 months(median,63 months;interquartile range,51‒74 months).Results:The all-cause mortality,cardiac mortality,and MACE rates in both DM and NDM patients were higher than those in the control group(P=0.001).All-cause mortalities,cardiac mortalities,and MACE rates in DM patients with moderate and high UA levels were significantly higher than those in the NDM group(P=0.001).Long-term survival rates decreased significantly with increased UA levels in the ACS groups(P=0.001).UA(odds ratio(OR)=2.106,95%confidence interval(CI)=1.244‒3.568,P=0.006)was found to be an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality and MACE in elderly ACS patients with DM.The cutoff value of UA was 353.6μmol/L(sensitivity,67.4%;specificity,65.7%).Conclusions:Serum UA level is a strong independent predictor of long-term all-cause death and MACE in elderly ACS patients with DM.

BACKGROUND Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct(IPNB)is a rare distinct subtype of precursor lesions of biliary carcinoma.IPNB is considered to originate from luminal biliary epithelial cells,typically displays mucin-hypersecretion or a papillary growth pattern,and results in cystic dilatation[1].IPNB develops anywhere in the intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary tracts,and can occur in various pathological stages from low-grade dysplasia to invasive carcinoma.IPNBs have similar phenotypic changes in the occurrence and development of all subtypes,and the prognosis is significantly better than that of traditional(nonpapillary)cholangiocarcinoma.AIM To evaluate the clinicopathological features of IPNB to provide evidence-based guidance for treatment.METHODS Invasive IPNB,invasive intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas(IPMN),and traditional cholangiocarcinoma data for affected individuals from 1975 to 2016 were obtained from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results(SEER)database.Annual percentage changes(APCs)in the incidence and incidence-based(IB)mortality were calculated.We identified the independent predictors of overall survival(OS)and cancer-specific survival(CSS)in indivi duals with invasive IPNB.RESULTS The incidence and IB mortality of invasive IPNB showed sustained decreases,with an APC of-4.5%(95%CI:-5.1%to-3.8%)and-3.3%(95%CI:-4.1%to-2.6%)(P<0.001),respectively.Similar decreases in incidence and IB mortality were seen for invasive IPMN but not for traditional cholangiocarcinoma.Both OS and CSS for invasive IPNB were better than for invasive IPMN and traditional cholangiocarcinoma.A total of 1635 individuals with invasive IPNB were included in our prognosis analysis.The most common tumor sites were the pancreaticobiliary ampulla(47.9%)and perihilar tract(36.7%),but the mucin-related subtype of invasive IPNB was the main type,intrahepatically(approximately 90%).In the univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis,age,tumor site,grade and stage,subtype,surgery,and chem

AIM:To demonstrate an improved surgical technique of whole piece consecutive internal limiting membrane(ILM) peeling without preservation of the epi-fovea to treat high myopic foveoschisis(MF).METHODS:A 23-gauge 3-port pars plana vitrectomy was performed on 16 patients with high MF.A parallel arc line along the vascular arcades was scraped out with a curved membrane scraper DSP.Next,an ILM forceps was used to catch hold of the incisal edge of the ILM flap,and the action of releasing and separating was subsequently taken toward the direction of the macular fovea.Next,the ILM forceps was used to grasp the released area,and the whole area coherent ILM peeling covering the macular fovea was implemented thereafter.Finally,the ILM was folded backwards and peeled off in the arc direction.RESULTS:At the final visit,the average central macular thickness decreased remarkably from 423.76±177.67 to 178.24±66.21 μm.The mean logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution best-corrected visual acuity of 1.37±0.59 was significantly alleviated to 0.74±0.59.CONCLUSION:The wide range of whole piece consecutive ILM peeling without preservation of the epifovea is proven to be effective and significantly reduced the occurrence of retinal tear and macular hole.

INTRODUCTION Brain edema is a serious clinical event and could cause various neurological symptoms such as dizziness and headache.Drugs frequently used to relieve brain edema include steroid,dehydrant （e.g.,mannitol）,and diuretics.But the effects of these drugs were limited in patients with severe edema.Bevacizumab has been applied in the treatment of cerebral radiation necrosis. Case studies have reported on the application of bevacizumab in the treatment of severe brain edema. In the present study,we describe significant effects of bevacizumab on severe brain edema in patients with re-irradiation.

MicroRNA-34a promoting apoptosis of human lens epithelial cells through down-regulation of B-cell lymphoma-2 and silent information regulator

AIM： To investigate the role of micro RNA-34a（mi R-34a） in the induction of apoptosis of human lens epithelial（HLE-B3） cells. METHODS： The apoptosis of HLE-B3 cells was detected by Annexin V-PE apoptosis detection kit after the treatment with 200 μmol/L H2O2 for 24h and lentiviral mi R-34 a vector transfection. The expression of mi R-34 a in the cells was quantified by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction（q RT-PCR） in response to H2O2 exposure and the vector transfection. The effects of overexpression of mi R-34 a on the expression of B-cell lymphoma-2（Bcl-2） and silent information regulator 1（SIRT1） was determined by q RT-PCR and Western blot. RESULTS： The expression of mi R-34 a was up-regulated by the treatment of H2O2 in HLE-B3 cells. The increased expression of mi R-34 a is accompanied with the cell apoptosis. Consistence with the H2O2 exposure,ectopic overexpression of mi R-34 a in HLE-B3 cells promoted cells apoptosis. Importantly the anti-apoptosis factors Bcl-2 and SIRT1 were reduced significantly by up-regulation of mi R-34 a in HLE-B3 cells.CONCLUSION： Mi R-34 a promotes the apoptosis of HLE-B3 cells by down-regulating Bcl-2 and SIRT1,suggesting that mi R-34 a may involve in the pathogenesis of cataract formation and targeting mi R-34 a may be a potentially therapeutic approach for treatment of cataract.

Systematic review of the outcomes of surgical resection for intermediate and advanced Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage hepatocellular carcinoma:A critical appraisal of the evidence

AIM To perform a systematic review to determine the survival outcomes after curative resection of intermediate and advanced hepatocellular carcinomas(HCC).METHODS A systematic review of the published literature was performed using the PubM ed database from 1 st January 1999 to 31 st Dec 2014 to identify studies that reported outcomes of liver resection as the primary curative treatment for Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer(BCLC) stage B or C HCC. The primary end point was to determine the overall survival(OS) and disease free survival(DFS) of liver resection of HCC in BCLC stage B or C in patients with adequate liver reserve(i.e., Child's A or B status). The secondary end points were to assess the morbidity and mortality of liver resection in large HCC(defined as lesions larger than 10 cm in diameter) and to compare the OS and DFS after surgical resection of solitary vs multifocal HCC.RESULTS We identified 74 articles which met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in this systematic review. Analysis of the resection outcomes of the included studies were grouped according to(1) BCLC stage B or C HCC,(2) Size of HCC and(3) multifocal tumors. The median 5-year OS of BCLC stage B was 38.7%(range 10.0-57.0); while the median 5-year OS of BCLC stage C was 20.0%(range 0.0-42.0). The collective median 5-year OS of both stages was 27.9%(0.0-57.0). In examining the morbidity and mortality following liver resection in large HCC, the pooled RR for morbidity [RR(95%CI) = 1.00(0.76-1.31)] and mortality [RR(95%CI) = 1.15(0.73-1.80)] were not significant. Within the spectrum of BCLC B and C lesions, tumors greater than 10 cm were reported to have median 5-year OS of 33.0% and multifocal lesions 54.0%.CONCLUSION Indication for surgical resection should be extended to BCLC stage B lesions in selected patients. Further studies are needed to stratify stage C lesions for resection.
