Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks,commonly found in East Asia,can transmit various pathogenic viruses,includingthe severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus(SFTSV)that has caused febrile diseases among humansin Hubei ***,understanding of the viromes of *** was limited,and the prevalence ofviruses among *** ticks in Hubei was not well *** study investigates the viromes of bothengorged(fed)and free(unfed)*** ticks across three mountainous regions in Hubei Province from 2019to ***-sequencing analysis identified viral sequences that were related to 39 reference viruses belonging tounclassified viruses and seven RNA viral families,namely Chuviridae,Nairoviridae,Orthomyxoviridae,Parvoviridae,Phenuiviridae,Rhabdoviridae,and *** abundance and diversity in these ticks were analysed,andphylogenetic characteristics of the Henan tick virus(HNTV),Dabieshan tick virus(DBSTV),Okutama tick virus(OKTV),and Jingmen tick virus(JMTV)were elucidated based on their full genomic *** demonstrated that DBSTV was the most common virus found in individual *** ticks(12.59%),followed by HNTV(0.35%),whereas JMTV and OKTV were not *** results improve our understanding of *** tick viromes in central China and highlight the role of tick feeding status and geographyin shaping the viral *** findings of new viral strains and their potential impact on public health raisethe need to strengthen surveillance efforts for comprehensively assessing their spillover potentials.

Sanwu Baisan decoction(三物白散)inhibits colorectal cancer progression in mice by remodeling gut microbiota and tumorigenesis

OBJECTIVE:To uncover the anti-tumor effects and potential mechanism of Sanwu Baisan Decoction(三物白散,SWB)in treatment of colorectal cancer(CRC)in ***:Therapeutic effect was evaluated based on body weight gain,tumor volume,tumor growth inhibition rate,and histological changes and apoptosis in the tumor ***-tumor immunity was studied by measuring plasma levels of anti-tumor cytokines,interleukin 6(IL-6),interleukin 17(IL-17),and interferonγ(IFN-γ).Gut morphological changes were evaluated by histological staining and tight junction proteins *** microbiota composition was analyzed by 16S r RNA gene *** toll-like receptor 4(TLR-4)/cyclooxygenase 2(COX-2)/prostaglandin E2(PGE-2)pathway was examined in colon tissue and tumor ***:SWB presented high anti-tumor efficacy of CRC in mice,which manifested as decreased tumor volume and increased tumor growth inhibition *** anti-tumor effect of SWB was associated with elevated plasma levels of anti-tumor immune cytokines(IL-6,IL-17,and IFN-γ).Further studies showed that SWB also increases the expression of occluding and promotes the abundance of gut probiotics,Clostridium_XIVa,Enterorhabdus,and uncultured_***,results suggested that the anti-tumor effects of SWB might associate with inducing cancer cell apoptosis and inhibiting the TLR-4/COX-2/PGE-2 pathway in both colon tissue and tumor ***:SWB shows strong anti-tumor efficiency in mice with colorectal carcinoma,possibly through promoting the secretion of anti-tumor immune cytokines,inducing cancer apoptosis,maintaining the gut microbiota,and inhibiting tumorigenesis by inhibiting the TLR-4/COX-2/PGE-2 pathway.

The presence of foci of Rickettsia conorii infection in China

Background Acute diarrhea with fever can potentially represent a more severe form of the disease compared to non-febrile diarrhea. This study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and enteric pathogen composition of febrile-diarrheal patients, and to explore factors including pathogens associated with fever by age *** A nationwide surveillance study of acute diarrheal patients of all ages was conducted in 217 sentinel hospitals from 31 provinces (autonomous regions or municipalities) in China between 2011 and 2020. Seventeen diarrhea-related pathogens, including seven viruses and ten bacteria, were investigated and their association with occurrence of fever symptoms was assessed using multivariate logistic *** A total of 146,296 patients with acute diarrhea (18.6% with fever) were tested. Th diarrheal children below 5 years had the highest frequency of fever (24.2%), and related to significantly higher prevalence of viral enteropathogens (40.2%) as compared with other age groups (P febrile-diarrheal patients were associated with a significantly higher prevalence of bacterial pathogens than afebrile-diarrheal patients (allP febrile vs non-febrile patients of all age groups, while the febrile vs non-febrile difference for diarrheagenicEscherichia coli (DEC) was only significant for adult groups. The multivariate analysis revealed significant association between fever and infection with rotavirus A among children [odds ratio (OR) = 1.60], for DEC in adult groups (OR = 1.64), for NTS in both children (OR = 2.95) and adults (OR = 3.59).Conclusions There are significant discrepancy of the infected enteric pathogens in patients with acute diarrhea with fever between age groups, and it is valuable for priority detection of NTS and rotavirus A in patients with children < 5 years

Topical dihydroartemisinin inhibits suture-induced neovascularization in rat corneas through ERK1/2 and p38 pathways

AIM: To determine if topical instillation of dihydroartemisinin (DHA) inhibits corneal neovascularization (NV) in rats and to investigate the role of the extracellular regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2 and p38 pathways in this process. O METHODS: Suture-induced corneal NV was produced in rats and the eyes were topically treated with different concentrations of DHA (20mg/L, 10mg/L or 5mg/L) or normal saline 4 times a day for 7 days. The corneal NV was quantified as the proportion of NV area to the whole cornea. Western blot was used to determine the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the phosphorylation status of VEGF receptor-2, ERK1/2 and p38 in the corneas. Immunofluorescent staining was used to determine the expressions of phospho-ERK1/2 and phospho-p38 in the corneal tissues from the eyes treated with 20 mg/L DHA (DHA group) or normal saline (control group). RESULTS: The proportion of corneal NV area in the eyes treated with normal saline or DHA at dosages of 20mg/L, 10mg/L or 5mg/L was (23.74 +/- 3.00)%, (15.73 +/- 2.88)%, (19.53 +/- 2.42)%, and (23.38 +/- 2.79)%, respectively. In the eyes treated with 20mg/L or 10mg/L DHA, the corneal NV area was significantly reduced when compared to that in eyes with normal saline (P < 0.05). Western blot analyses revealed that 20mg/L DHA significantly inhibited the expressions of VEGF and phospho-VEGFR-2. Both 20mg/L and 10mg/L DHA inhibited the expressions of phospho-ERK1/2 and phospho-p38. Immunofluorescent staining further demonstrated that 20mg/L DHA lowered the Expression levels of phospho-ERK1/2 and phospho-p38 in the corneas with suture-induced NV. O CONCLUSION: Suture-induced NV in rat corneas was significantly inhibited by topical treatment with 20mg/L and 10mg/L DHA. The results suggest that the effects could be partially dependent on the DHA-mediated inhibitions of the ERK1/2 and p38 pathways.

Emodin Inhibits Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation by Activating Autophagy in RAW 264.7 Cells

Perceptions and Controversies on Cholera in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Field in the Late Qing Dynasty

At the beginning of the initial cholera outbreak in China,Wang Qingren(王清任),after years of clinical trials,became an early representative who discovered the infectious characteristics and observed the course of cholera in the field of traditional Chinesse medicine(TCM).Kou Langao(寇兰皋)and Xu Zimo(徐子默),both medical practitioners,constructed a diagnosis and treatment system for cholera with cold patterns under the theory of *** represented“School of Cholera with Cold Patterns”(SCCP).In the 1860s,with the influence of Wang Shixiong’s(王士雄)studies on the nature of cholera under the theory of epidemic febrile disease,the“School of Cholera with Heated Patterns”(SCHP)prevailed *** two schools complemented each other in theories and contributed to the integrity of TCM in cholera diagnosis and *** reviewing previous literature,books,clinical cases,and historical materials in medical field,this article aims 1)to summarise the influence of TCM on the cognitive development towards cholera in the late Qing dynasty;2)to explore the origin of the controversy between SCCP and SCHP from historical evidence;3)to summarize the historical lessons from the debate over cholera in TCM based on the principle of treatment based on pattern identification,and offer suggestions for the current prevention and treatment of new diseases using TCM.

Procedure and clinical assessments of malariotherapy:recent experience in 20 HIV patients

Objective To demonstrate the side effects of malariotherapy and to explore safe procedures in conduct of malariotherapy for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients Methods Twenty HIV/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients were selected for the study of malariotherapy and were intravenously infected with Plasmodia vivax to induce therapeutic malaria Malaria was terminated with chloroquine after 10-20 malarial febrile episodes Clinical assessments were made before (baseline), during (malarial phase) and after (post) termination of malaria The density of Plasmodia in peripheral blood from the HIV/AIDS patients were compared to that from HIV negative naturally infected malarial patients who donated the blood for the therapeutically induced malaria CD 4 cell baseline levels were correlated to the severity of malarial symptoms and parasitemia Results There were no significant differences of Plasmodium density between the HIV/AIDS patients injected with P vivax and the HIV negative blood donors However, it was found that the HIV positive patients had milder malarial symptoms and parasitemia with progressively lower CD 4 cell baseline levels All patients developed every day or every other day fever episodes with headache and shaking chill These symptoms were well tolerated with the aid of anti pyretic medications Spleen and liver enlargement were seen in 15 of 20 and 4 of 20 patients respectively Transitory liver effects with increase of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase were seen in 2 of 20 during malarial phase Most patients experienced mild to medium anemia and 6 of 20 patients developed thrombocytopenia during malarial phase All these side effects disappeared after termination of malaria or within one month thereafter No complications occurred in these patients Conclusions Therapeutically induced acute vivax malaria was well tolerated in 20 HIV positive subjects who represented a range of CD 4 cel
