Summary： mRNAs of alpha-adrenoceptor （α-AR） subtypes are found in neurons in dorsal root ganglion （DRG） and change after peripheral nerve injury. In this study, the distribution of α-AR subtype proteins was studied in L5 DRG of normal rats and rats with chronic constriction injury of sciatic nerve （CCI）. Using immunofluorescence technique, it was found that α1A-, α1B-, and α2A-AR proteins were expressed in large, medium, and small size neurons in normal DRG, and significantly increased in all size neurons 14 days after CCI. α1D- and α2C-AR was also expressed in all size neurons in normal DRG. However, α1D-AR was significantly increased and α2C-AR was decreased in small size neurons 14 days post CCI. α2B-AR neurons were not detectable in normal and CCI DRG. Co-expression of α1A- and α2A-AR in the same neuron was observed in normal DRG and increased post CCI. Collectively, these results indicated that there is distinct distribution of α-AR subtypes in DRG neurons, and the distribution and levels of expression of α-AR subtypes change differently after CCI. The up-regulation of α-AR subtypes in DRG neurons may play an important role in the process of generating and transmitting neuropathic pain.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of hyaluronic acid(HA)on the expression of heat-shock protein 70(HSP70)in chondrocytes isolated from patients with osteoarthritis(OA)and Kashin-Beck disease(KBD).The chondrocytes were collected from OA and KBD patients,and chondrocytes isolated from patients of accident injuries were used as the *** chondrocytes were treated with HA at different ***70 expression in chondrocytes at both mRNA and protein levels was tested by PCR and Western blot *** with control,both mRNA and protein levels of HSP70 were higher in chondrocytes from KBD and ***,HA at the dose of 500μg/mL significantly inhibited HSP70 expression levels in both KBD and OA groups(P<0.05).In conclusion,HSP70 is highly expressed in chondrocytes of patients of OA and *** intervention inhibits the upregulation of HSP70 in chondrocytes of OA and KBD patients and could be a promising agent for treatment of OA and KBD.

FILARIASIS IN FUJIAN PROVINCE

Malayan filariasis is mainly found in the northwestern part of Fujian province, whereas bancroftian filariasis is found in the central and southern part of this province. There were approximately 2,000,000 patients with filariasis in this province in 1958. The prevalence rate was higher in male (9.4%) than in female (7.7%). Fever attacks and elephantiasis of limbs were common in the malayan filariasis endemic areas, but less common in the bancroftian filariasis endemic areas. Analysis of hydrocele fluid showed that hydrocele was not caused by exudative reaction from the stimulation of the living worms, but was caused by inflammatory obstruction of lymphatic vessles. The periodicity indices obtained from both species of filaria in the endemic areas were over 92%. Investigation showed that C. fatigans is the chief vector of W. bancrofti while An. lesteri anthropophagus is the true vector of B. malayi. Diethylcarbamazine citrate (Hetrazan) had been used for the treatment of malayan and bancroftian filariasis with good results. The control of filariasis is closely related with the improvement of living standard. Through mass survey and treatment, the W. bancrofti microfilarial rate had dropped from 8.3% in 1956 to 0.76% in 1980 in the most densely populated Xiaoqiao District in Fuzhou city.

1. Study on the effect of bephenium hydroxynaphthoate in the treatment of 225 cases of hookworm infection was reported. The effect of the drug on the concomitant infections of Ascaris and Trichuris, which occurred respectively in 126 and 99 of the cases, was also studied and analyzed.2. The dosages of 3 and 5 gm (1.77 and 2.77 gm base) were found to be effective on all 3 kinds of worms, and when given in single doses, practically no side reaction was produced. However for mass application, 3 gm is considered the dose of choice.3. In all 3 infections and in most cases at least 4 treatments were necessary to get rid of the worms.4. In hookworm infection bephenium hydroxynaphthoate seems to be more effective against Ancylostomas than Necators.5. Bephenium hydroxynaphthoate therapy showed a remarkable rate of egg reduction but the number of cases cleared of the infection varied inversely with the intensity of the infection. Thus under the same dosage of treatment, the rates of clearances of the severe cases (over 10,000 eggs per ml), moderate cases (1,000-9,999 eggs per ml), light cases (100-999 eggs per ml) and very light cases (below 99 eggs per ml) were, respectively, 0.0, 14.2, 20.0 and 34.2%.6. The importance of an accurate method of diagnosis, such as the egg count method, in evaluating the efficacy of the drug in these studies was discussed.

Urinary tract infections(UTIs)are among the most frequent causes for antibiotic prescription and;therefore,alternative treatment options for UTIs can potentially reduce antibiotic usage and development of *** evaluate the efficacy of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAIDS)for the treatment of uncomplicated lower UTIs in women,this study implemented a meta-analytic approach to evaluate the results of available randomized clinical studies from online databases.A total of four trials involving 1144 patients with uncomplicated lower UTIs were included in the final *** showed that symptom resolution at Day 3-4 in the NSAIDs group was significantly lower than that in the antibiotics group[pooled odds ratio(OR)=0.41,95%confidence interval(CI):0.23-0.74,P<0.05].However,there was no significant difference between the NSAIDs and antibiotics groups in symptom resolution at Day 7(pooled OR=0.43,95%CI:0.17-1.06,P=0.07),secondary antibiotic treatment rate at Day 28-30(pooled OR=1.15,95%CI:0.16-7.98,P=0.89)and adverse events rate(pooled OR=1.09,95%CI:0.61-1.96,P=0.77).Therefore,this metaanalysis suggests that,although inferior to antibiotics in fast symptom resolution,symptomatic treatment with NSAIDs can be considered as an alternative treatment option for uncomplicated lower UTIs in ***,given the low number of randomized controlled trials that met inclusion criteria in this meta-analysis,efficacy of NSAIDs for treatment of uncomplicated lower UTIs should be further evaluated in more comprehensive clinical studies.

This paper reviews the epidemiological status and characteristics of clonorchiasis at global level and the etiological relationship between Clonorchis sinensis infection and cholangiocarcinoma(CCA).A conservative estimation was made that 15 million people were infected in the world in 2004,of which over 85%distributed in *** epidemiology of clonorchiasis is characterized by rising trend in its prevalence,variability among sexes and age,as well as endemicity in different *** data indicate that *** infection is carcinogenic to human,and it is predicted that nearly 5000 CCA cases attributed to *** infection may occur annually in the world decades later,with its overall odds ratio of *** is becoming one major public health problem in east Asia,and it is worthwhile to carry out further epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND:Infectious complications are common during the postoperative course of a liver transplant recipient. Malaria, however, is a rare complication in such a setting. METHOD:We report post-transplantation malaria causing elevation of liver enzymes in two recipients. RESULTS:Both patients who had undergone living donor liver transplantation showed elevated levels of liver enzymes and fever during the postoperative course. Investigations (including liver biopsy in one patient) were initially inconclusive in determining the cause of liver dysfunction. The diagnosis of malaria was established in both cases by peripheral blood smear. Liver function transiently worsened with antimalarial treatment but subsequently became normal. CONCLUSION:This report highlights the importance of excluding such uncommon causes of post-transplantation liver dysfunction, especially when either the recipient or the donor comes from a region endemic for malaria.
