A neglected risk for sparganosis:eating live tadpoles in central China

A 29-year-old farmer from central China was sent into the Emergency department of the Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou *** had a 15-day history of persistent high fever,abdominal distention and *** patient was clinically diagnosed as appendicitis and peritonitis,and treated with antibiotics in a local hospital,did not *** exploratory laparotomy,the appendicular perforation and peritonitis were seen;appendicectomy were performed,and antibiotics were ***,high fever and abdominal pain still persisted;intestinal adhesion and obstruction,ascites *** was given the“critically ill notice”.He had eosinophilia(12.95%)and the history of eating live frog tadpoles for treating his cutaneous pruritus 3 days before onset of the *** anti-sparganum antibodies assayed by ELISA were *** patient has hospitalized for one and half months and spend more than US$*** patient was primarily diagnosed as visceral sparganosis,and cured with *** is one neglected but important parasitic zoonosis of *** infections were mainly acquired by eating raw or uncooked meat of frogs and snakes infected with plerocercoids,using frog or snake flesh as poultices,or drinking raw water contaminated with infected ***,sparganosis caused by ingestion of live tadpoles are emerging in central *** surveys showed that 11.93%of tadpoles in Henan province are infected with *** live tadpoles is a high risk for sparganum *** comprehensive public health education should be carried out for people in endemic areas and the bad habit of eating live tadpoles must be discouraged.

The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiological characteristics of co-infection of HIV and intestinal parasites in a HIV/AIDS highly endemic area in China.A cross-sectional survey was carried out in two villages where HIV/AIDS prevalence in residents was over 1%.Stool samples of all residents in the two targeted villages were examined for the presence of intestinal *** examination was performed for the HIV infection detection and anemia test.A questionnaire survey was carried out in all residents participating in the study.A total of 769 individuals were enrolled in the investigation,720 of whom were involved in stool examination of intestinal *** infection rates of parasites in the residents of the targeted villages were as follows:0.56%for Ascaris lumbricoides,4.03%for Hookworm,0.28%for Trichuris trichiura,0.42%for Clonorchis sinensis,21.39%for Blastocystis hominis,3.89%for Giardia lamblia,1.67%for Entamoeba spp.,4.44%for Cryptosporidium spp.,and no infection for Strongyloides *** overall infection rate of intestinal worms was 4.72%,intestinal parasite infection rate was 24.31%,the anemia prevalence rate was 34.68%,the co-infection rate of HIV and intestinal helminthes 2.17%,the co-infection rate of HIV and intestinal protozoa 28.26%,of which the co-infection rates of HIV and Blastocystis hominis,and HIV and Cryptosporidium *** 19.57%and 13.04%,respectively.A signiﬁcant difference of Cryptosporidium *** rate was found between HIV-positive group(13.04%)and HIV-negative group(4.70%)(P50%)and women(>39%).It was concluded that the infection rate of intestinal protozoa in the residents was higher than that of intestinal helminthes in the local setting,and a same pattern appeared in the co-infection rate of HIV and *** interestingﬁnding is that the infection rate of Cryptosporidium *** the HIV-positiv

Introduction:Traditional methods for determining radiation dose in nuclear medicine include the Monte Carlo method,the discrete ordinate method,and the point kernel integration *** study presents a new mathematical model for predicting the radiation dose rate in the vicinity of nuclear medicine ***:A new algorithm was created by combining the physical model of“cylinder superposition”of the human body with integral analysis to assess the radiation dose rate in the vicinity of nuclear medicine ***:The model accurately predicted radiation dose rates within distances of 0.1–3.0 m,with a deviation of less than 11%compared to observed *** model demonstrated greater accuracy at shorter distances from the radiation source,with a deviation of only 1.55%from observed values at 0.1 ***:The model proposed in this study effectively represents the spatial and temporal distribution of the radiation field around nuclear medicine patients and demonstrates good agreement with actual *** model has the potential to serve as a radiation dose rate alert system in hospital environments.

Characterization of cDNA from the miracidial antigen family of Schistosoma japonicum (Chinese strain)

Objective To identify the egg antigens related to the formation of hepatic granulomas and fibrosis of Schistosomiasis *** The egg cDNA library of Schistosoma japonicum ( *** ) was constructed and screened by immunological methods with the pooled sera of advanced schistosomiasis patients. The inserted foreign DNA fragments of positive clones were sequenced. The sequence data were analyzed using Wdnasis 2.5 and compared with Genebank data using blast software. Results Eighty-one clones containing recombinant DNA fragments were obtained from the egg cDNA library of *** by immunological screening. The DNA sequences of all clones belonged to the miracidial antigen family. The longest cDNA fragment was 1604 bp,which contained an open reading frame of 351 bp,which encoded a protein of 1 2913.35 daltons. Conclusion The cDNA sequence of the miracidial antigen of *** (Chinese strain) was obtained for the first time.

Developing a rat model of dilated cardiomyopathy with improved survival

To compare the continuous infusion and intermittent bolus injection administration protocols of doxorubicin（Dox） under the same cumulative dose（12 mg/kg）, and establish a rat dilated cardiomyopathy model with improved survival, a total of 150 Sprague-Dawley（SD） rats were divided into three groups： a control group, administered with normal saline; a Dox 1 group, administration twice a week at 1 mg/kg; a Dox 2, administration once a week at 2 mg/kg. Mortality rates in the Dox 1 and Dox 2 groups were 22% and 48%, respectively（P〈0.05）. As shown by echocardiography, both Dox groups exhibited significant chamber dilatation and reduced cardiac function（all P〈0.05 vs. control）. Plasma brain natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein concentrations were significantly increased（P〈0.05） with both Dox regimens. The concentrations of Caspase-3 in myocardial tissues of rats significantly increased in both doxorubicin regimens. Myocardial metabolism imaging by histology and ^18F-fluoro-deoxyglucose-positron emission tomography（^18FDG-PET） both revealed decreased myocardial viability and necrosis, and even interstitial fibrosis, in left ventricles（LVs） in both Dox groups. Serum creatinine and aspartate aminotransferase concentrations were significantly higher in the Dox 2 model than in the Dox 1 model. Doxorubicin given at both regimens induced dilated cardiomyopathy, while its administration at lower doses with more frequent infusions reduced the mortality rate.
