Freezing stress can seriously affect plant growth and development,but the mechanisms of these effects and plant responses to freezing stress require further ***,we identified a NAM,ATAF1/2,and CUC2(NAC)-family transcription factor(TF),NAC056,that can promote freezing tolerance in ***056 mRNA levels are strongly induced by freezing stress in roots,and the nac056 mutant exhibits compromised freezing ***056 acts positively in response to freezing by directly promoting key C-repeat-binding factor(CBF)pathway ***,we found that CBF1 regulates nitrate assimilation by regulating the nitrate reductase gene NIA1 in plants;therefore,NAC056–CBF1–NIA1 form a regulatory module for the assimilation of nitrate and the growth of roots under freezing *** addition,35S::NAC056 transgenic plants show enhanced freezing tolerance,which is partially reversed in the cbfs triple ***,NAC056 confers freezing tolerance through the CBF pathway,mediating plant responses to balance growth and freezing stress tolerance.

Revegetation of former agricultural land is a key option for climate change mitigation and nature *** and abandonment of agricultural land is typically influenced by trends in diets and agricultural inten-sification,which are two key parameters in the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways(SSPs).Datasets mapping future land dynamics under different SSPs and climate change mitigation targets stem from different scenario assump-tions,land data and modelling *** study aims to determine the role that these three factors play in the estimates of the evolution of cropland and pastureland in future SSPs under different climate scenarios from four main datasets largely used in the climate and land surface *** datasets largely agree with the rep-resentation of cropland at present-day conditions,but the identification of pastureland is ambiguous and shows large discrepancies due to the lack of a unique land-use *** occur with future projections,even for the same SSP and climate *** for CO_(2)sequestration from revegetation of abandoned agri-cultural land and CO_(2)emissions from forest clearance due to agricultural expansion shows a net reduction in vegetation carbon stock for most SSPs considered,except ***,different datasets give differences in estimates,even when representative of the same *** SSP1,the cumulative increase in carbon stock until 2050 is 3.3 GtC for one dataset,and more than double for *** study calls for a common classifica-tion system with improved detection of pastureland to harmonize projections and reduce variability of outcomes in environmental studies.

The genus Diomus Mulsant, 1850(Coleoptera: Coccinellidae: Diomini) from China is herein revised. Five species of Diomus are occurring in the Chinese fauna to date, including a new species from the Dafushan Mountains Forest Park, Guangzhou, Guangdong, namely *** Bi, Peng & Chen, sp. nov. Nomenclatural history, diagnosis, illustrations and distribution were provided for each species. A key to the native species of Diomus from China is also presented.

Participants in mixed-species bird flocks(MSFs)have been shown to associate with species that are similar in body size,diet,and evolutionary history,suggesting that facilitation structures these *** addition,several studies have suggested that species in MsFs resemble each other in their plumage,but this question has not been systematically investigated for any MsF *** the nonbreeding season of 2020 and 2021,we sampled 585 MSFs on 14 transects in 2 habitats of Tongbiguang nature Reserve in western Yunnan Province,*** performed social network analysis and the Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure to evaluate the effect of 4 species traits(body size,overall plumage color,distinctive plumage patterns,and diet)and evolutionary history on species association strength at the whole-MSF and within-MSF *** 41 significant relationships showed that species with stronger associations were more similar in their various *** size had the strongest effect on association strength,followed by phylogeny,plumage patterns,and plumage color;diet had the weakest *** results are consistent with the hypotheses that the benefits of associating with phenotypically similar species outweigh the potential costs of interspecific competition,and that trait matching can occur in plumage characteristics,albeit more weakly than in other *** explanations exist as to why similarities in plumage may occur in MSFs,including that they could reduce predators'ability to target phenotypically"odd"*** trait matching in plumage occurs through assortative processes in ecological time or is influenced by co-evolution requires furtherstudy.

In connection with the current prospect of decarbonization of coal energy through the use of small nuclear power plants (SNPPs) at existing TPPs as heat sources for heat supply to municipal heating networks, there is a technological need to improve heat supply schemes to increase their environmental friendliness and efficiency. The paper proves the feasibility of using the heat-feeding mode of ASHPs for urban heat supply by heating the network water with steam taken from the turbine. The ratio of electric and thermal power of a “nuclear” combined heat and power plant is given. The advantage of using a heat pump, which provides twice as much electrical power with the same heat output, is established. Taking into account that heat in these modes is supplied with different potential, the energy efficiency was used to compare these options. To increase the heat supply capacity, a scheme with the use of a high-pressure heater in the backpressure mode and with the heating of network water with hot steam was proposed. Heat supply from ASHPs is efficient and environmentally friendly even in the case of significant remoteness of heat consumers.

Stomatal regulation is critical for mangroves to survive in the hyper-saline intertidal zone where water stress is severe and water availability is highly ***,very little is known about the stomatal sensitivity to vapour pressure deficit(VPD)in mangroves,and its co-ordination with stomatal morphology and leaf hydraulic *** measured the stomatal response to a step increase in VPD in situ,stomatal anatomy,leaf hydraulic vulnerability and pressure-volume traits in nine true mangrove species of five families and collected the data of genome *** aimed to answer two questions:(1)Does stomatal morphology influence stomatal dynamics in response to a high VPD in mangroves?with a consideration of possible influence of genome size on stomatal morphology;and(2)do leaf hydraulic traits influence stomatal sensitivity to VPD in mangroves?We found that the stomata of mangrove plants were highly sensitive to a step rise in VPD and the stomatal responses were directly affected by stomatal anatomy and hydraulic ***,denser stomata was correlated with faster stomatal closure at high VPD across the species of Rhizophoraceae,and stomata size negatively and vein density positively correlated with genome *** negative leaf osmotic pressure at the full turgor(πo)was related to higher operating steady-state stomatal conductance(gs);and a higher leaf capacitance(Cleaf)and more embolism resistant leaf xylem were associated with slower stomatal responses to an increase in *** addition,stomatal responsiveness to VPD was indirectly affected by leaf morphological traits,which were affected by site salinity and consequently leaf water *** results demonstrate that mangroves display a unique relationship between genome size,stomatal size and vein packing,and that stomatal responsiveness to VPD is regulated by leaf hydraulic traits and stomatal *** work provides a quantitative framework to better understand of stomatal regulation in mangroves

Focal plants are considerably affected by their neighbouring plants,especially when growing in heterogeneous soils.A previous study on grasses demonstrated that soil heterogeneity and species composition affected plant biomass and above-and belowground allocation *** now tested whether these findings were similar for *** forb species(*** anglica,Limonium bicolor and Suaeda glauca)were grown in pots with three levels of soil heterogeneity,created by alternatively filling resource-rich and resource-poor substrates using small,medium or large patch *** compositions were created by growing these forbs either in monocultures or in *** showed that patch size×species composition significantly impacted shoot biomass,root biomass and total biomass of forbs at different ***,at the pot scale,shoot biomass,root biomass and total biomass increased with increasing patch *** the substrate scale,shoot biomass and total biomass were higher at the large patch size than at the medium patch size,both in resource-rich and resource-poor ***,at the community scale,monocultures had more shoot biomass,root biomass and total biomass than those in the two-or three-species *** results differ from earlier findings on the responses of grasses,where shoot biomass and total biomass decreased with patch size,and more shoot biomass and total biomass were found in resource-rich than resource-poor *** further elucidate the effects of soil heterogeneity on the interactions between neighbour plants,we advise to conduct longer-term experiments featuring a variety of functional groups.

Root-associated bacteria play a vital role in the growth and adaptation of host plants to drought stress. These bacteria can be classified as rhizoplane and rhizosphere bacteria based on their distance from the root surface. Tomato plants are often exposed to periodic drought and nitrogen (N) addition throughout their life cycle, but the impacts of these factors on the plant and root-associated bacteria are not well understood. To gain insight into this relationship, we conducted an experiment to monitor the effects of periodic drought and N addition on rhizoplane and rhizosphere bacteria of tomato plants. Drought and N addition had interactive effects on plant and soil properties, which varied with the timing of drought. There were clear divergences in community traits such as alpha diversity, beta diversity, and network topological features between the two types of bacteria. The rhizoplane bacteria showed lower alpha diversity but higher beta diversity and were more sensitive to drought and N addition than the rhizosphere bacteria. Nitrogen addition could downsize the effects of drought on rhizoplane bacterial community compositions. The higher proximity to the root might induce a community to develop more cooperation between different members to cope with plant metabolites, as revealed by the more connected and modularized community network of the rhizoplane bacteria. Drought at the seedling stage had great legacy effects on plant and soil properties. It may enhance selection, cause the dominance of deterministic processes in the assembly of rhizoplane bacteria, and reduce bacterial community network complexity. In conclusion, N addition could interact with drought in affecting tomato plants and their root-associated bacteria, depending on the timing of drought and the fineness of root niches. The higher sensitivity of rhizoplane bacteria to drought and N addition calls for more research due to their higher proximity and importance to plants in future environment

Nitrogen oxides(NOx),significant contributors to air pollution and climate change,form aerosols and ozone in the ***,timely,and transparent information on NOx emissions is essential for decision-making to mitigate both haze and ozone ***,a comprehensive understanding of the trends and drivers behind anthropogenic NOx emissions from Chinadthe world's largest emitterdhas been lacking since 2020 due to delays in emissions *** we show a consistent decline in China's NOx emissions from 2020 to 2022,despite increased fossil fuel consumption,utilizing satellite observations as constraints for NOx emission estimates through atmospheric *** reduction is corroborated by data from two independent spaceborne instruments:the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument(TROPOMI)and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument(OMI).Notably,a reduction in transport emissions,largely due to the COVID-19 lockdowns,slightly decreased China's NOx emissions in *** subsequent years,2021 and 2022,reductions in NOx emissions were driven by the industry and transport sectors,influenced by stringent air pollution *** satellite-based inversion system developed in this study represents a significant advancement in the real-time monitoring of regional air pollution emissions from space.
