Analysis of influencing factors of anxiety and depression in patients with periodontitis

BACKGROUND Periodontitis is a chronic oral disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms that corrode tooth tissue,form periodontal pockets,absorb alveolar bone,and finally lead to tooth loss.During treatment,patients are prone to anxiety,tension,and other negative emotions,which affect their ability to face the disease and may also lead to aggravation of the original condition and affect oral health.Therefore,it is important to improve the negative psychology of patients with periodontitis to clarify the factors that may lead to negative psychological emotions.AIM To investigate the risk factors that may lead to anxiety and depression in patients with periodontitis.METHODS One hundred patients with periodontitis were selected between March 2022 and March 2023 at our hospital.All patients were assessed with the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS)(≥53 points indicate a depressive state)and Zung Selfrating Anxiety Scale(SAS)(≥50 points indicates an anxious state).In this study,patients who experienced anxiety or depression were included in the occurrence group and those without anxiety or depression were included in the nonoccurrence group.The baseline data of the two groups were compared to explore the risk factors for anxiety and depression in patients with periodontitis.RESULTS A total of 100 patients with periodontitis were included in this study.According to the SDS,38 patients(38.00%)developed depression,with an average SDS score of(68.52±5.85)points.According to the SAS,40 patients(40.00%)developed anxiety,and the average SAS score was(72.15±4.15)points.In this study,56 patients with anxiety or depression were included.Compared with the nonoccurrence group,the occurrence group had higher ages(≥60 years),lower level of hope(low level),educational level(high school or below),disease perception(poor),and sleep disorder(yes).The negative coping dimension scores of the simplified coping style questionnaire(SCSQ)and dental Fear Scale(DFS)in the occurrence group were higher,whereas the score of the positive coping

Mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of low rigidity quaternary titanium alloy for biomedical applications

Electrochemical corrosion of Ti-35Nb-5Ta-7Zr alloy fabricated by arc melting and heat treatment process was studied in 0.9% NaCl at(37±1) ℃.Phase and microstructure of the fabricated alloy were investigated using X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope.Mechanical properties such as yield strength and elastic modulus of the alloy were determined by tensile test.Potentiodynamic polarization technique and impedance spectroscopy were employed to study the corrosion behavior.The results of the study were compared with those obtained for Ti-6Al-4V commercial alloy.The result of the study supports feasibility of Ti-35Nb-5Ta-7Zr alloy for implant applications.

Objective: Some studies have investigated the association between oral microbiome and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, there needs to be more narrative reviews synthesizing this evidence. This study aimed to bridge this gap in the current knowledge. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed (MEDLINE) to identify studies examining the association between the oral microbiome and MCI. Search parameters and inclusion criteria were clearly defined, encompassing terms related to the oral microbiome, MCI, and their association. Two authors independently selected relevant studies and performed data extraction. Result: Four studies were included. Two cohort studies and two case-control reported an association between the oral microbiome and MCI. Conclusion: Based on the evidence synthesized from the included studies, the review suggests an association between MCI and the oral microbiome. Specifically, all included studies identified significant differences in the abundance of specific microbial species between individuals with MCI and those with normal cognitive function, underscoring the potential role of these species in neuroinflammatory diseases.

In dentistry,orthodontic root resorption is a long-lasting issue with no effective treatment strategy,and its mechanisms,especially those related to senescent cells,remain largely unknown.Here,we used an orthodontic intrusion tooth movement model with an L-loop in rats to demonstrate that mechanical stress-induced senescent cells aggravate apical root resorption,which was prevented by administering senolytics(a dasatinib and quercetin cocktail).

The Role of Host-derived Dentinal Matrix Metalloproteinases in Reducing Dentin Bonding of Resin Adhesives

Dentin matrix metalloproteinases （MMPs） are a family of host-derived proteolytic enzymes trapped within mineralized dentin matrix, which have the ability to hydrolyze the organic matrix of demineralized dentin. After bonding with resins to dentin there are usually some exposed collagen fibrils at the bottom of the hybrid layer owing to imperfect resin impregnation of the demineralized dentin matrix. Exposed collagen fibrils might be affected by MMPs inducing hydrolytic degradation, which might result in reduced bond strength.Most MMPs are synthesized and released from odontoblasts in the form of proenzymes, requiring activation to degrade extracellular matrix components. Unfortunately, they can be activated by modem self-etch and etch-and-rinse adhe- sives. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge of the role of dentinal host-derived MMPs in dentin matrix degradation. We also discuss various available MMP inhibitors, especially chlorhexidine, and suggest that they could provide a potential pathway for inhibiting collagen degradation in bonding interfaces thereby increasing dentin bonding durability.

Influence of Aging and 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate Content on the Color Stability of Experimental 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate-added dental Glass Ionomers

Color stability of dental resin modified glass ionomer （RMGI） has been a challenge to dentistry; therefore, systematic changes in 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate （HEMA） content were performed experimentally to find an idea to enhance the color stability. Changes in color （△E＊ab） and color coordinates （△L＊, △a＊ and △b＊） of experimental 10-50 wt pct HEMA-added dental glass ionomers （HAGIs） and corresponding RMGIs were determined after 5000 cycles of thermocycling. Color changes of HAGIs were not influenced by the HEMA content while △L＊, △a＊ and △b＊ values were influenced by the HEMA content. Color stability of 30% or 40% HEMA-added HAGIs was not different from those of the commercial RMGIs. Since the influence of HEMA itself on the color stability of HAGIs was limited, compositional modification to increase the color stability of these materials should be developed.

The surface topography of a material can influence osteoclast activity.However,the surface structural factors that promote osteoclast activity have not yet been investigated in detail.Therefore,we investigated osteoclastogenesis by testing various defined patterns with different dimensions and shapes.The systematic patterns,made of a cyclo-olefin polymer,were prepared at a micron-,submicron-,and nano-scale with a groove,hole,or pillar shape with a 1:1 pitch ratio.RAW264.7 cells were cultured on these patterns in the presence of the receptor activator of NF-κB ligand(RANKL).Osteoclast formation was induced in the order:pillar>groove≥hole.The two-dimensional factors also indicated that submicron-sized patterns strongly induced osteoclast formation.The optimal pillar dimension for osteoclast formation was 500 nm in diameter and 2μm in height.Furthermore,we observed two types of characteristic actin structure,i.e.,belt-like structures with small hollow circles and isolated ring-like structures,which formed on or around the pillars depending on size and height.Furthermore,resorption pits were observed mainly on the top of calcium phosphate-coated pillars.Thus,osteoclasts prefer convex shapes,such as pillars for differentiation and resorption.Our results indicate that osteoclastogenesis can be controlled by designing surfaces with specific morphologies.

Massive low-grade myxoid liposarcoma of the floor of the mouth:A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND Oral liposarcoma is an extremely rare lesion that is often clinically misdiagnosed as a benign tumor due to its asymptomatic and indolent clinical course.Here,we report a case of massive low-grade myxoid liposarcoma(MLS)of the floor of the mouth.CASE SUMMARY A 71-year-old man presented with a huge mass in the left floor of the mouth.A biopsy was performed,and a diagnosis of a myxoid tumor suspicious for lowgrade MLS or myxoma was made.Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed an intensely enhanced tumor lesion that occupies the left sublingual space and extends to the submandibular space.Submandibular dissection,tumor resection,and reconstruction with a radial forearm flap were performed.The surgical specimen exhibited histologically low-grade MLS.Fused in sarcoma(FUS,also known as TLS)and DNA damage-inducible transcript 3(DDIT3,also known as CHOP)break-apart was not detected in the fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis.The tumor was completely encapsulated and did not require additional treatment.Furthermore,no recurrence was reported 40 mo after surgery.CONCLUSION We experienced an extremely rare,massive,low-grade MLS emerging from the floor of the mouth.Oftentimes,an MLS of the floor of the mouth lacks significant clinical findings and is often misdiagnosed.Although no FUS-DDIT3 fusion gene was detected,a low-grade MLS was ultimately diagnosed based on the histological findings.

Distribution of splenic artery lymph nodes and splenic hilar lymph nodes

BACKGROUND Total gastrectomy with splenectomy is the standard treatment for advanced proximal gastric cancer with greater-curvature invasion.As an alternative to splenectomy,laparoscopic spleen-preserving splenic hilar lymph node(LN)dissection(SPSHLD)has been developed.With SPSHLD,the posterior splenic hilar LNs are left behind.AIM To clarify the distribution of splenic hilar(No.10)and splenic artery(No.11p and 11d)LNs and to verify the possibility of omitting posterior LN dissection in laparoscopic SPSHLD from an anatomical standpoint.METHODS Hematoxylin&eosin-stained specimens were prepared from six cadavers,and the distribution of LN No.10,11p,and 11d was evaluated.In addition,heatmaps were constructed and three-dimensional reconstructions were created to visualize the LN distribution for qualitative evaluation.RESULTS There was little difference in the number of No.10 LNs between the anterior and posterior sides.For LN No.11p and 11d,the anterior LNs were more numerous than the posterior LNs in all cases.The number of posterior LNs increased toward the hilar side.Heatmaps and three-dimensional reconstructions showed that LN No.11p was more abundant in the superficial area,while LN No.11d and 10 were more abundant in the deep intervascular area.CONCLUSION The number of posterior LNs increased toward the hilum and was not neglectable.Thus,surgeons should consider that some posterior No.10 and No.11d LNs may remain after SPSHLD.

Effect of colouring green stage zirconia on the adhesion of veneering ceramics with different thermal expansion coefficients

This study evaluated the adhesion of zirconia core ceramics with their corresponding veneering ceramics, having different thermal expansion coefficients （TECs）, when zirconia ceramics were coloured at green stage. Zirconia blocks （N=240; 6 mm x 7 mm x 7 mm） were manufactured from two materials namely, ICE Zirconia （Group 1） and Prettau Zirconia （Group 2）. In their green stage, they were randomly divided into two groups. Half of the specimens were coloured with colouring liquid （shade A2）, Three different veneering ceramics with different TEC （ICE Ceramic, GC Initial Zr and IPS e.max Ceram） were fired on both coloured and non-coloured zirconia cores. Specimens of high noble alloys （Esteticor Plus） veneered with ceramic （VM 13）（n= 16） acted as the control group. Core-veneer interface of the specimens were subjected to shear force in the Universal Testing Machine （0.5 mm-min-1）. Neither the zirconia core material （P=0.318） nor colouring （P=0.188） significantly affected the results （three-way analysis of variance, Tukey＇s test）. But the results were significantly affected by the veneering ceramic （P=0.000）. Control group exhibited significantly higher mean bond strength values （45.7__.8） MPa than all other tested groups （（27.1__.4.1）-（39.7__.4.7） and （27.4__.5.6）-（35.9___4.7） MPa with and without colouring, respectively）（P^0.001）. While in zirconia-veneer test groups, predominantly mixed type of failures were observed with the veneering ceramic covering ~ 1/3 of the substrate surface, in the metal-ceramic group, veneering ceramic was left adhered 1/3 of the metal surface. Colouring zirconia did not impair adhesion of veneering ceramic, but veneering ceramic had a significant influence on the core-veneer adhesion. Metal-ceramic adhesion was more reliable than all zirconia-veneer ceramics tested.
