Review of current method to determine outburst threshold limits in Australian underground coal mines

Outburst of coal and gas represents a significant risk to the health and safety of mine personnel working in development and longwall production face *** have been over 878 outburst events recorded in twenty-two Australian underground coal *** outburst incidents have been associated with abnormal geological *** of Australian outburst incidents and mining experience in conditions where gas content was above current threshold levels are presented and *** experience suggests that for gas con-tent below 9.0 m^3/t,mining in carbon dioxide(CO2)rich seam gas conditions does not pose a greater risk of outburst than mining in CH4 rich seam gas *** experience also suggests that where no abnormal geological structures are present that mining in areas with gas content greater than the current accepted threshold levels can be undertaken with no discernible increase in outburst *** current approach to determining gas content threshold limits in Australian mines has been effective in prevent-ing injury from outburst,however operational experience suggests the current method is overly conser-vative and in some cases the threshold limits are low to the point that they provide no significant reduction in outburst *** factors that affect outburst risk,such as gas pressure,coal toughness and stress and geological structures are presently not incorporated into outburst threshold limits adopted in Australian *** factors and the development of an outburst risk index applicable to Australian underground coal mining conditions are the subject of ongoing research.

Optimizing and slope determination of final wall for Maiduk Mine with consideration of destabilizer factors

In this research, determination of final slope for Maiduk copper mine of Kerman is investigated according to destabilizing factors of the mine. The development of the Maiduk Mine caused the extension of the mine area and also withdrawal of its wall. So, optimizing possibility of mine slope is essential. Finally,the magnitude of optimized slopes for different walls of the mine in association with executive commands with better factors of safety is provided. The results show that the most important destabilizer factors are the presence of water and pore pressure in the faults and the main joints. With the omission of pore pressure, mine wall for the designed depth is quite stable. This requires a drainage pattern in the lifetime of the mine. In an optimistic point of view, the minimum factor of safety of the wall will be 2.81 even without drainage. This conclusion allows optimizing the slope to its maximum magnitude of 51 degree. With the pessimistic engineering judgment and with the higher SF, the magnitude of the slope is optimized to 47 degree.

Simulation and optimization approach for uncertainty-based short-term planning in open pit mines

Accuracy in predictions leads to better planning with a minimum of opportunity lost. In open pit mining,the complexity of operations, coupled with a highly uncertain and dynamic production environment,limit the accuracy of predictions and force a reactive planning approach to mitigate deviations from original plans. A simulation optimization framework/tool is presented in this paper to account for uncertainties in mining operations for robust short-term production planning and proactive decision making. This framework/tool uses a discrete event simulation model of mine operations, which interacts with a goalprogramming based mine operational optimization tool to develop an uncertainty based short-term schedule. Using scenario analysis, this framework allows the planner to make proactive decisions to achieve the mine's operational and long-term objectives. This paper details the development of simulation and optimization models and presents the implementation of the framework on an iron ore mine case study for verification through scenario analysis.

Optimized design of drilling and blasting operations in open pit mines under technical and economic uncertainties by system dynamic modelling

Drilling and blasting are the two most significant operations in open pit mines that play a crucial role in downstream stages. While previous research has focused on optimizing these operations as two separate parts or merely in a specific parameter, this paper proposes a system dynamic model(SDM) for drilling and blasting operations as an interactive system. In addition, some technical and economic uncertainties such as rock density, uniaxial compressive strength, bit life and operating costs are considered in this system to evaluate the different optimization results. For this purpose, Vensim simulation software is utilized as a powerful dynamic tool for both modelling and optimizing under deterministic and uncertain conditions. It is concluded that an integrated optimization as opposed to the deterministic approach can be efficiently achieved. This however is dependent on the parameters that are considered as uncertainties.

Velocity of detonation measurement and fragmentation analysis to evaluate blasting efficacy

In holes, the measurement of the velocity of detonation（VOD） helps in comparing and evaluating relative performance of explosives. In this paper a blast performance assessment was conducted based on the results obtained from the steady state VOD measurement of emulsion explosives HEF100 and degree of blast fragmentation conducted on an open pit blast. The aim of this study was to compare the steady state VOD measured in the field and the published VOD of HEF100 under ideal laboratory conditions and ascertain its efficacy. In the trial, a resistance wire continuous VOD measurement system connected to a SpeedVOD was employed to measure and record the steady state VOD values from five different blast holes. Furthermore, a post fragmentation analysis was conducted using the existing fragmentation models and an image processing software. The steady state VOD values recorded from the field ranged between 4981 m/s to 5387 m/s consistent with the published VOD subjected to ideal laboratory conditions and the analyzed fragmentation size distribution indicates that 90% of the blasted muck pile was within the allowable and optimal 700 mm passing size.

An integrated theoretical and experimental investigation of insensitive munition compounds adsorption on cellulose,cellulose triacetate, chitin and chitosan surfaces

This manuscript reports results of combined computational chemistry and batch adsorption investigation of insensitive munition compounds, 2,4-dinitroanisole（DNAN）, triaminotrinitrobenzene（TATB）, 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethene（FOX-7） and nitroguanidine（NQ）, and traditional munition compound 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene（TNT） on the surfaces of cellulose, cellulose triacetate, chitin and chitosan biopolymers. Cellulose,cellulose triacetate, chitin and chitosan were modeled as trimeric form of the linear chain of4 C1 chair conformation of β-D-glucopyranos, its triacetate form, β-N-acetylglucosamine and D-glucosamine, respectively, in the 1 ？ 4 linkage. Geometries were optimized at the M062 X functional level of the density functional theory（DFT） using the 6-31 G（d,p） basis set in the gas phase and in the bulk water solution using the conductor-like polarizable continuum model（CPCM） approach. The nature of potential energy surfaces of the optimized geometries were ascertained through the harmonic vibrational frequency analysis. The basis set superposition error（BSSE） corrected interaction energies were obtained using the 6-311 G（d,p）basis set at the same theoretical level. The computed BSSE in the gas phase was used to correct interaction energy in the bulk water solution. Computed and experimental results regarding the ability of considered surfaces in adsorbing the insensitive munitions compounds are discussed.

Investigation of the short-term stress distribution in stopes and drifts backfilled with cemented paste backfill

Cemented paste backfill(CPB) is largely used in underground mines worldwide.A key issue associated with application of CPB is to estimate the stresses in backfilled stopes and on *** numerical and experimental results show that arching effect is absent shortly after the placement of CPB in ***,stress decreases in barricade drift with increasing distance between the measurement points and drawpoint have also been observed,demonstrating arching effect shortly after the pouring of *** explain these paradoxes,CPB is considered as Bingham fluid having a yield shear *** dimensional analytical solutions are proposed to evaluate the short-term total stresses in backfilled stopes and on barricades,accounting for the CPB's yield shear stress-induced arching *** diminution due to such arching effect in the backfilled stopes and on barricades is indeed *** the reduction becomes insignificant using typical yield shear stress and stope *** analyses indicate that the typical yield shear stress values do not fully correspond to field conditions where the yield shear stress would increase exponentially due to apparent consolidation(loss of water by drainage,a phenomenon similar to the desiccation of overly saturated fine-grained materials).

Shear properties of cemented rockfills

Application of cemented rockfilling to underground mining could not be separated from the corresponding backfill’s shear strength properties. The shear of cemented rockfill(CRF)-rock wall and the shear interaction occurring within CRFs both have some disadvantageous failure chances. In this study,we tried to investigate the complete shear properties of CRFs using direct shear and triaxial tests of cemented granite rockfill. Large-scale triaxial testing was held to accommodate the large CRF *** shear testing on the prepared flat and smooth surfaces was assessed with brief conversions and their corrections were used to approximate the shear strength envelopes of CRF joint interfaces. Two types of CRFs with the same aggregate size and distribution but different unconfined compressive strengths(UCSs) due to different mixture designs indicated insignificant differences between their basic friction angles, and also their asperity inclination angles. Nevertheless, investigation between direct shear test and triaxial test showed that the specimen with higher UCS tended to have a slightly lower friction angle but a higher cohesion than the other one.

Evaluation of the impact of commodity price change on mine plan of underground mining

Fluctuations in commodity prices should influence mining operations to continually update and adjust their mine plans in order to capture additional value under new market conditions. One of the adjustments is the change in production sequencing. This paper seeks to present a method for quantifying the net present value(NPV) that may be directly attributed to the change in commodity prices. The evaluation is conducted across ten copper price scenarios. Discrete event simulation combined with mixed integer programming was used to attain a viable production strategy and to generate optimal mine plans. The analysis indicates that an increase in prices results in an increased in the NPV from$96.57M to $755.65M. In an environment where mining operations must be striving to gain as much value as possible from the rights to exploit a finite resource, it is not appropriate to keep operating under the same mine plan if commodity prices alter during the course of operations.
