Nano-ceramic particles can serve as reinforcing agents for metallic materials to improve their mechanical ***,it is important to ensure chemical compatibility between the matrix and *** the present study,magnesium composites with and without nano-hydroxyapatite(nHA)particles were fabricated for bone reconstruction *** different techniques were used,Conventional Sintering(CS)of powder compacts and Spark Plasma Sintering(SPS)of pre-compacted *** showed that a 10 wt%addition of nHA particles to magnesium,followed by SPS improved the compression strength by 27%.CS did not lead to any significant improvement compared to SPS processing.X-ray diffraction data after CS revealed the formation of unfavorable phases due to chemical reactions between nHA particles and the magnesium matrix,while these phases were absent after SPS *** mechanical properties of the specimens fabricated by CS were much inferior to those processed using *** shorter processing time associated with SPS leaded to reduced interaction between nHA particles and the Mg-matrix,compared to CS.

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in biomedical devices,***,due to its biocompati-bility and osseointegration *** fact,fungal(Candida spp.)infection has been identified as one of the key reasons causing the failure of the device that is inevitable and impactful to the ***,this study evaluated the surface morphology,surface chemical composition and Candida albicans adhesion on specimens of 16 binary Tialloys(-5 wt%of any one of the alloy elements:Ag,AI,Au,Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,In,Mn,Mo,Nb,Pd,Pt,Sn,V and Zr)compared with cp-Ti,targeting to seek for the binary Ti-alloys which has the lowest *** *** albicans cultures were grown on the specimens for 48 h,and colony forming units(CFUs)and real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)were used to evaluate the biofilm formation *** electron mi-croscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed the formation of *** biofilm on all specimens'surfaces,such that CFU results showed Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have less *** formed on the surfaces than ***-PCR showed Ti-Zr and Ti-Cu have significantly higher *** DNA concentrations than Ti-AI and Ti-V(P<0.05),whereas Ti-Cu has even showed a statistically higher concentration than Ti-Au,Ti-Co,Ti-In and Ti-Pt(P<0.05).This study confirmed that Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have lower the occurrence of *** which might be clinically advantageous for medical devices,but Ti-Cu should be used in caution.

The Encouraging Novel Amelogenesis Models and Ex vivo cell Lines （ENAMEL） Development workshop was held on 23 June 2017 at the Bethesda headquarters of the National institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research （NIDCR）. Vajradanti means strong teeth in Hindi. The medicinal properties of Vajradanti plant are well reported in Ayurveda. Its botanical name is Barleria prionitis L. and it belongs to family Acanthaecae. The use of herbal products in the field of medicine has gained popularity in recent years. In India, herbal plants are used as a regular source of medicine. Plants, such as Turmeric, Ashoka and Triphala, are some common household names being widely used nowadays. One such name is Barleria prionitis L. or Vajradanti, having anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fertility properties. The leaves of this flower are also believed to provide relief in tooth ache. So these properties lead us to the use of this shrub in the remedy of dental diseases. materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the department of Periodontology, in collaboration with the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dental sciences, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, India and N.B.R.I. Lucknow. A total of 80 subjects, from age group 20 - 50 years, were selected. The study unit consisted of patients of chronic gingivitis. Simple random sampling, utilizing computer generated random numbers, was employed to assign the participants to two groups, “I” and “II”, each having 40 participants. In patients of Group-I scaling and root planing was performed, whereas in patients of Group-II, scaling and root planing was performed and subjects were advised to apply Vajradanti gel twice daily after brushing. Statistical Analysis: Data were summarized as mean ± SD. Pre and post outcome results of two groups were compared by the paired t-test. Conclusions: Based on the observations and results of our study, it can be concluded that scaling and root planing remains the gold standard for the treatment of gingival and periodontal diseases while the Vajradanti gel (Barleria prionitis L.) can be effectively used as an adjunct to mechanical plaque control in prevention of chronic gingivitis.

Engineering a complete,physiologically functional,periodontal complex structure remains a great clinical challenge due to the highly hierarchical architecture of the periodontium and coordinated regulation of multiple growth factors required to induce stem cell multilineage *** biomimetic self-assembly and microstamping techniques,we construct a hierarchical bilayer architecture consisting of intrafibrillarly mineralized collagen resembling bone and cementum,and unmineralized parallel-aligned fibrils mimicking periodontal *** prepared biphasic scaffold possesses unique micro/nano structure,differential mechanical properties,and growth factor-rich microenvironment between the two phases,realizing a perfect simulation of natural periodontal hard/soft tissue *** interconnected porous hard compartment with a Young’s modulus of 1409.00±160.83 MPa could induce cross-arrangement and osteogenic differentiation of stem cells in vitro,whereas the micropatterned soft compartment with a Young’s modulus of 42.62±4.58 MPa containing abundant endogenous growth factors,could guide parallel arrangement and fibrogenic differentiation of stem cells in *** implantation in critical-sized complete periodontal tissue defect,the biomimetic bilayer architecture potently reconstructs native periodontium with the insertion of periodontal ligament fibers into newly formed cementum and alveolar bone by recruiting host mesenchymal stem cells and activating the transforming growth factor beta 1/Smad3 signaling *** together,integration of self-assembly and microstamping strategies could successfully fabricate a hierarchical bilayer architecture,which exhibits great potential for recruiting and regulating host stem cells to promote synergistic regeneration of hard/soft tissues.
