OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects and related mechanisms of electroacupuncture(EA)on irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).METHODS:Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly allocated into normal,model,and EA groups.Experimental IBS mice models were established by exposure to water avoidance stress(WAS).Mice in the EA group were treated with EA at bilateral Tianshu(ST 25)and Zusanli(ST 36)for 7 consecutive days,15 min each day.Abdominal withdrawal reflex(AWR)tests and intestinal motility tests were performed to evaluate visceral sensitivity and intestinal motility of mice.Expression levels of tight junction proteins(TJPs)and inflammatory cytokines in colon tissues were determined through immunofluorescence,real-time polymerase chain reactions(PCR)and Western blot assays.RESULTS:EA alleviated visceral hypersensitivity and intestinal hypermotility in WAS-induced IBS mice.Moreover,EA promoted the expression of zonula occludens(ZO)-1,claudin-1,and occludin while suppressing the expression of interleukin(IL)-8,interferon(IFN)-γ,and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αin water avoidance stress(WAS)-induced irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)mice.CONCLUSION:EA alleviated WAS-induced IBS in mice by promoting intestinal barrier functions and suppressing the expression of inflammatory cytokines.

OBJECTIVE:To explore the effect of electroacupuncture on skeletal muscle pain in Parkinson's disease(PD).METHODS:A single-center randomized controlled trial was conducted with sixty patients with Parkinson's disease with skeletal muscle pain were randomly divided into electroacupuncture group and sham acupuncture control group with 30 patients each.The electric acupuncture group was treated with electric acupuncture,while the control group was treated with Park needle pseudoacupuncture.Both groups were treated 5 times a week for a total of 4 weeks,and both groups completed 20 treatments.King's Parkinson's Pain Scale(KPPS)and visual analog scale(VAS)were used before and after treatment to evaluate the pain degree of patients.Realtime shear wave elastography(SWE)and modified Ashworth score(MAS)were used to evaluate the changes of muscle tone.Parkinson's comprehensive Score Scale(MDS-UPDRS,including UPDRS Ⅱ and UPDRS Ⅲ)was used to evaluate exercise ability.Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD)score was used to evaluate the emotional changes of patients.Spearman correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between pain degree and muscle tone,exercise ability and emotion.RESULTS:During the study,one case fell off in the control group,and 30 cases were eventually included in the analysis and treatment group and 29 cases in the control group.After treatment,Young's modulus of biceps and quadriceps and shear wave velocity of biceps were decreased in electroacupuncture group compared with before treatment,while KPPS score,VAS score,UPDRS Ⅱ,UPDRS Ⅲ and modified Ashworth score were decreased,with statistical significance(P0.05).After treatment,KPPS score,VAS score,UPDRS Ⅱ and UPDRS Ⅲ,MAS,HAMD score,Young's modulus of biceps and shear wave velocity in electroacupuncture group were significantly lower than those in control group(P<0.05).Spearman correlation analysis showed that KPPS score was positively correlated with UPDRS Ⅲ(r=0.414,P<0.05).KPPS score was

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether electroacupuncture(EA) at bilateral Tianshu(ST25) and Zusanli(ST36) acupoints could alleviate stress-induced irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) and evaluate its effect on gut microbiota and corticotropin-releasing factor(CRF). METHODS: Thirty C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into the normal, water avoidance stress(WAS), and WAS+EA groups(10 mice per group). An experimental model of IBS was established by exposing the animals to WAS. The mice were treated with EA at the bilateral Tianshu(ST25) and Zusanli(ST36) acupoints. The abdominal withdrawal reflex test was conducted to evaluate visceral sensitivity in IBS. Gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S r RNA sequencing and analysis. The expression of CRF was determined using immuneofluorescence and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: EA alleviated visceral hypersensitivity in a mouse model of WAS-induced IBS. It modulated the dysbiosis of gut microbiota induced by WAS. Moreover, it suppressed the WAS-induced overexpression of CRF in colon tissues. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that EA alleviated WAS-induced IBS via mechanisms possibly involving the modulation of the dysbiosis of gut microbiota and suppression of CRF expression.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effectiveness of cycling in combination with electroacupuncture in treatment of poststroke hemiplegia patients at National Hospital of acupuncture,Vietnam.METHODS:The study was designed as a single-centre,outcome-assessor-blinded parallel randomised controlled trial with 120 post-stroke hemiplegia patients randomly assigned into two groups:electroacupuncture plus cycling(CT group) and electroacupuncture(AT group).Patients were assessed before and after the treatment(using muscle grading,modified Rankin,Barthel,Orgorozo scores and electromyography).Statistical Man–Whitney U test,and Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare between CT and AT groups.RESULTS:The results reported statistically significant improvement in motor function in patients suffering from hemiplegia following ischemic stroke in both CT and AT groups.Patients in CT group experienced a greater improvement compared to those in AT group including better muscle contraction(increased frequency and amplitude of electromyography and increased muscle grading scale);increased recovery(Orgogozo scale),increased independency(Barthel scale) and decreased disability(Modified Rankin scale)(P acupuncture.

OBJECTIVE:To explore the sensitization acupoints of women with primary dysmenorrhea(PD)by comparing infrared radiation temperatures between acupoints and non-acupoints.METHODS:We tested 10 acupoints of every woman with PD and healthy subjects on premenstrual,menstrual,and postmenstrual days using an infrared imaging device.The primary outcome was the absolute value of body surface temperature difference(AVTD)between the left and right sides of the same testing point.RESULTS:A total of 58 PD patients and 57 healthy volunteers completed the test from May 2016 to May 2017.Compared with the healthy group,we observed a significant reduction and increase in the AVTD in Taichong(LR3)and Sanyinjiao(SP6),respectively,during menstrual days in the PD group(P=0.01;P=0.04);while during postmenstrual days,all AVTDs of Shuiquan(KI5),Diji(SP8),and Xuehai(SP10)were diminished in the PD group(P=0.01;P=0.03;P=0.01,respectively).No significant differences in AVTD were detected at any other points or testing times.CONCLUSIONS:Compared with the healthy group,the AVTDs of Taichong(LR3),Sanyinjiao(SP6),Shuiquan(KI5),Diji(SP8),and Xuehai(SP10)at menstruationrelevant points of PD patients were sensitized,providing a reference for the selection of acupoints in the treatment of PD.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the efficacy of bee venom acupuncture in humeroscapularis(PHS)patients.METHODS:One hundred and twenty patients diagnosed with PHS were assigned into four groups:BV1(0.01 mg/kg),BV2(0.005 mg/kg),BV3(0.0025 mg/kg),and control group(vitamin B1 plus novocain 3%injection)with 15 d of treatment.The outcomes of the study including visual analogue scale(VAS)score andβ-endorphin,inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-10(IL-10),IL-1βand tumor necrosis factorα(TNF-α)and shoulder function score were assessed at baseline,after 10 and 15 d of treatment.RESULTS:All four groups reported statistically significant improvement in VAS score,motion range,and shoulder function score(P<0.01),only the BV3 group showed significant increase of anti-inflammatory(IL-10)and decrease of pro-inflammatory(IL-1β,TNF-α)cytokines after treatment(P<0.05).The BV3 group presented a significant difference between all outcomes compared to the control and other groups.CONCLUSION:BV3 groups showed better recovery including reduced pain,improved motor function and normalized inflammatory cytokines than current therapy used in Vietnam and other groups.

Objective:To explore whether acupuncture combined with moxibustion could inhibit epithelialmesenchymal transition in Crohn’s disease by affecting the transforming growth factorβ1(TGF-β1)/Smad3/Snail pathway.Methods:Sixty-three patients with Crohn’s disease were randomly divided into an observation group(31 cases)receiving moxibustion at 43℃ combined with acupuncture,and a control group(32 cases)receiving moxibustion at 37℃combined with sham acupuncture using a random number table.Patients were treated for12 weeks.Crohn’s Disease Activity Index(CDAI)was used to evaluate disease activity.Hematoxylin-eosin staining and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to observe the morphological and ultrastructural changes.Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of transforming growth factorβ1(TGF-β1),TβR1,TβR2,Smad3,Snail,E-cadherin and fibronectin in intestinal mucosal tissues.Results:The decrease of the CDAI score,morphological and ultrastructural changes were more significant in observation group.The expression levels of TGF-β1,TβR2,Smad3,and Snail in the observation group were significantly lower than those before the treatment(Pacupuncture may suppress TGF-β1/Smad3/Snail pathway-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition of intestinal epithelial cells in Crohn’s disease patients by inhibiting the expression levels of TGF-β1,TβR2,Smad3,and Snail.(Registration No.ChiCTR-IIR-16007751).

Objective Rheumatoid arthritis(RA)progression is associated with the balance of T-regulatory(Treg)and T-helper 17(Th17)cells,while the role of microRNAs(miRs)in regulating Treg/Th17 cell balance has not been clarified.This study aimed to assess whether moxibustion could regulate Treg/Th17 cell balance by modulating the miR-221/suppressor of cytokine signaling 3(SOCS3)axis in the RA mouse model.Methods A mouse model of collagen-induced arthritis(CIA)was established in male DBA/1J mice.Twenty-two days after CIA induction,the mice received daily treatment with moxibustion for 12 times.Pathological scores were assessed according to the levels of synovial hyperplasia.The expression levels of cytokines interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-6,tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interferon-γ(IFN-γ),IL-17 and IL-10 were analyzed in serum by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.The cluster of differentiation 4(CD4+)splenocytes was analyzed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting.The expression levels of RA-related miRs and target genes were subsequently detected,and the target of miR-221 was confirmed by the dual-luciferase reporter assay.Results It was revealed that moxibustion treatment decreased the pathological scores and downregulated the expression levels of IL-1β,IL-6,TNF-α,IFN-γand IL-17,while upregulated the expression level of IL-10.The Treg/Th17 cell balance was regulated by moxibustion treatment.The expression level of miR-221 was suppressed by moxibustion treatment.Furthermore,SOCS3 was found as the direct target of miR-221,which mediated the function of moxibustion by regulating the Treg/Th17 cell balance.Conclusion Moxibustion therapy regulated the Treg/Th17 cell balance by modulating the miR-221/SOCS3 axis in the RA mouse model.

Background： Migraine without aura （MWoA）, the most common type of migraine, has great impacts on quality of life for migraineurs. acupuncture is used in the treatment and prevention of migraine for its analgesic effects. Objective： The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to systematically assess the therapeutic and preventive effect of acupuncture treatment and its safety for MWoA,Search strategy： Nine electronic databases （PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure （CNKI）, Chongqing VIP （CQV1P）, Wanfang Data and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry （ChiCTR）） were systematically searched from their beginning through June 2017 using MeSH terms such as ＂acupuncture, acupuncture therapy, electro-acupuncture, ear acupuncture, acupuncture points, acupuncture analgesia,＂ and ＂migraine disorders, cluster headache.＂ Manual searching included other conference abstracts and reference lists. Inclusion criteria： Randomized controlled trials （RCTs） with a clinical diagnosis of MWoA, which were treated with acupuncture versus oral medication or sham acupuncture treatment. Data extraction and analysis： Two evaluators screened and collected literature independently; they extracted information on participants, study design, interventions, follow-up, withdrawal and adverse events and assessed risk of bias and quality of the acupuncture intervention. The primary outcomes were frequency of migraine （FM） and number of migraine days （NM）. Secondary outcomes included the visual analogue scale （VAS） score, effective rate （ER） and adverse events. Pooled estimates were calculated as mean difference （MD） with 95% confidence interval （CI） for continuous data and relative risk （RR） with 95% CI for dichotomous data. Results： Overall, 14 RCTs including 1155 participants were identified. The analysis found that acupunc- ture had a significant advantage over medication in reducing FM （MD）=-1.50; 95% CI： -2.32 to -0.68; P〈 0.001） and VAS score （MD =0.97; 95% CI： 0.63-1.31; P〈 0.00001） and

OBJECTIVE:To investigate how the“special effect”/“coeffect”/“synergistic effect”can achieve a positive result using an“acupuncture prescription”for functional gastrointestinal disorders(FGIDs)in clinical practice,based on the characteristics of single/compatible acupoints and acupuncture techniques.METHODS:According to the search strategy,we searched six electronic bibliographic databases and provided a summary for this overview.RESULTS:A large body of evidence has shown that acupuncture has positive effects in the treatment of FGIDs.However,the“prescription”intervention involved different single acupoints,compatible acupoints and acupoints based on expert consensus.CONCLUSIONS:The core acupoints,including Tianshu(ST25),Zusanli(ST36),and Shangjuxu(ST37),emphasize the application of special acupoints,meridian points and nerve segments,and the two-way regulatory effect found in this study is often used as the basis of acupoint selection and acupoint prescription for acupuncture treatment of FGIDs.
