Autologous cord blood vs individualized supplements in autistic spectrum disorder:CORDUS study results

BACKGROUND Cellular therapies have started an important new therapeutic direction in autistic spectrum disorder(ASD),and the ample diversity of ASD pathophysiology and the different types of cell therapies prompt an equally ample effort to employ clinical studies for studying the ASD causes and cell *** cells have yielded so far mixed results in clinical trials,and at patient level the results varied from impressive to no *** this context we have administered autologous cord blood(ACB)and a non-placebo,material intervention repre-sented by an individualized combination of supplements(ICS)to ASD *** CORDUS clinical study is a crossover study in which both oral ICS and intravenous ACB were sequentially administered to 56 children;ACB was infused as an inpatient *** efficacy was evaluated pre-treatment and post-treatment at 6 months by an independent psychotherapist with Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist,Quantitative Checklist for Autism in Toddlers and a 16-item comparative table score,after interviewing the children’s parents and *** and after each intervention participants had a set of blood tests including inflammatory,metabolic and oxidative markers,and the neuronal specific *** No serious adverse reactions were noted during and after cord blood or supplement *** improved evaluation scores in 78%of children with age 3–7-years(n=28),but was much less effective in kids older than 8 years or with body weight of more than 35 kg(n=28;only 11%of children improved scores).ICS yielded better results than ACB in 5 cases out of 28,while in 23 kids ACB brought more improvement than ICS(P<0.05);high initial levels of inflammation and ferritin were associated with no *** individual differences were noted in children's progress,and statistically significant improvements were seen after ACB on areas such as verbalization and social interaction,but not on irritability or

Dear Editor,We report a case of Purtscher-like retinopathy in a patient with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Fundus examination revealed extensive peripapillary white retinal patches(Purtscher’s fleckens)and cotton-wool spots(CWS)with minor hemorrhage bilaterally,consistent with Purtscher-like *** coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)showed multiple irregular areas of capillary nonperfusion.

Objective:The objective of this study was to determine the level of methotrexate(MTX)toxicity in the intestines of mice and to evaluate the protective effect of probiotics composed of Streptococcus,Bifidobacterium,and Lactobacillus species on intestinal cells during MTX ***:Mice were divided into three groups:control,MTX group(received MTX injections),and MTX+probiotics group(received MTX injections along with a diet containing probiotics).Morphological and histological changes,the level of mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)damage,the level of lipid peroxidation products,and gene expression in the mice’s small intestine were ***:We demonstrated that intraperitoneal MTX injections significantly increased mtDNA damage in the liver(ptherapy in mice partially mitigated the morphological and histological changes in the small intestine induced by MTX,reduced oxidative stress,and promoted increased expression of quinone oxidoreductase 1(Nqo1),which participates in both cell protection against oxidative stress and drug/xenobiotic *** prevented the upregulation of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1b in the small intestine and induced increased expression of genes associated with the Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/Antioxidant response element(Nrf2/ARE)pathway,an important mechanism of cell ***:Probiotics can be considered an effective approach to reducing the toxicity of MTX during psoriasis or cancer treatment.

Effect of Coffee Aroma on Cerebral Activity during Concentration Tasks

Caffeine has been shown to reduce various health risks, such as diabetes, obesity, and vascular diseases, and it may provide health benefits when consumed in moderate amounts, such as three to four cups per day. However, caffeine may exhibit harmful effects depending on the dose. Although the health benefits and disadvantages of caffeine intake have been studied, the effects of caffeine’s aroma have hardly been studied. This study aimed to examine the impact of caffeine scent on brain activity during cognitive tasks using electroencephalography (EEG). This study included 30 healthy young adults. We investigated cerebral activity using EEG during the concentration tasks. Participants performed tasks under pre- and post-conditions, including drinking coffee, smelling coffee, or drinking water. The number of correct responses and reaction times were calculated for each task, and mean power levels were analyzed. A linear mixed model was applied with “performance”, “ROI”, and “wave band” to examine the effects of conditions and timing. Significant differences were observed in left-frontal θ power (coffee α power (coffee P θ between pre- and post-task during water conditions (pre α on the frontal lobe and higher θ are associated with improved arousal and cognitive functions. Drinking coffee reduced α power, whereas smelling coffee or drinking water increased θ power. Therefore, drinking coffee, smelling coffee, and drinking water may affect cerebral activities and enhance cognitive performance.

Risks of anti-Helicobacter therapy and long-term therapy with antisecretory drugs

Dermatoprotective Effect of Ocoxin Cream® in Cancer Patients Treated with Radiation therapy. Case Series

Background: The effects of radiation therapy can impact patients’ quality of life, leading to treatment interruptions and therefore sub-optimal outcomes. The main aim was to evaluate the preliminary effects of Ocoxin cream® in the prevention of radiation therapy. Methods: Fifty patients were enrolled in an observational, longitudinal, prospective, single-centre clinical trial in the department of Radiation therapy at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology in Havana, Cuba. The Radiation therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) toxicity criteria were used to classify the radiation therapy, and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) instrument was used to assess quality of life. Results: Patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled consecutively and were treated with teletherapy using a 60Co source with 1.25 MeV energy. 70.0% of the patients were head and neck cancer patients. No grade 3 - 4 radiation therapy was reported, nor were there any interruptions in radiation treatment due to skin toxicity. Radiation therapy was observed in only 14.0% of patients, and of these, only two patients developed grade 2 toxicity. The perception of quality of life before vs. after radiation therapy remained within an average range of “no effect” (at the start of radiation therapy) to “small effect” (at the end of radiation therapy). Conclusions: This clinical study is the first report of the use of Ocoxin cream® in cancer patients and demonstrates that it is able to prevent radiation therapy and reduce the severity of toxicity of treatment with ionising radiation.
