Liver cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide,with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)comprising most *** hepatitis B and C viral infections,heavy alcohol use,and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)-associated advanced fibrosis/cirrhosis,several other risk factors for HCC have been identified(*** age,obesity,insulin resistance,type 2 diabetes).These might in fact partially explain the occurrence of HCC in non-cirrhotic patients without viral *** surveillance through effective screening programs is still an unmet need for many nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)patients,and identification of pre-cirrhotic individuals who progress to HCC represents a substantial challenge in clinical practice at the *** with NASHcirrhosis should undergo systematic HCC surveillance,while this might be considered in patients with advanced fibrosis based on individual risk *** this context,interventions that potentially prevent NAFLD/NASH-associated HCC are *** paper provided an overview of evidence related to lifestyle changes(*** loss,physical exercise,adherence to healthy dietary patterns,intake of certain dietary components,etc.)and pharmacological interventions that might play a protective role by targeting the underlying causative factors and pathogenetic ***,well-designed prospective studies specifically dedicated to NAFLD/NASH patients are still needed to clarify the relationship with HCC risk.

This article analyses the literature regarding the value of computer-assisted systems in esogastroduodenoscopy-quality monitoring and the assessment of gastric *** data show promising results in upper-endoscopy quality control and a satisfactory detection accuracy of gastric premalignant and malignant lesions,similar or even exceeding that of experienced ***,artificial systems enable the decision for the best treatment strategies in gastriccancer patient care,namely endoscopic vs surgical resection according to tumor *** so doing,unnecessary surgical interventions would be avoided whilst providing a better quality of life and prognosis for these *** these performance data have been revealed by numerous studies using different artificial intelligence(AI)algorithms in addition to white-light endoscopy or novel endoscopic techniques that are available in expert endoscopy *** is expected that ongoing clinical trials involving AI and the embedding of computer-assisted diagnosis systems into endoscopic devices will enable real-life implementation of AI endoscopic systems in the near future and at the same time will help to overcome the current limits of the computer-assisted systems leading to an improvement in *** benefits should lead to better diagnostic and treatment strategies for gastric-cancer ***,the incorporation of AI algorithms in endoscopic tools along with the development of large electronic databases containing endoscopic images might help in upper-endoscopy assistance and could be used for telemedicine purposes and second opinion for difficult cases.

Association of periodontal disease with glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes in Indian population

This study aims to investigate the link between glycated hemoglobin and diabetic complications with chronic periodontitis. A total of 207 patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis （CP） were divided according to tertiles of mean PISA （periodontal inflamed surface area） scores as low, middle and high PISA groups. Simultaneously a group of 67 periodontally healthy individuals （PH） was recruited. Periodontal examinations, including full-mouth assessment of probing depths （PPD）, bleeding on probing, clinical attachment level and plaque scores were determined. Blood analyses were carried out for glycated hemoglobin （HbA1c）, fasting plasma glucose （FPG）, 2 h post parandial glucose （PPG）. Individuals in PH group had significantly better glycemic control than CP group. Upon one-way analysis of variance, subjects with increased PISA had significantly higher HbA1c levels, retinopathy and nephropathy （P 〈 0.05）. After controlling for age, gender, body mass index （BMI）, socioeconomic status （SES）, family history of diabetes and periodontitis, duration of diabetes, the mean PISA in mm^2, PPD 4-6 mm （%） and PPD ≥7 mm （%） emerged as significant predictors for elevated HbAlc in regression model （P 〈 0.05）. Logistic regression analysis revealed that PISA was associated with higher risk of having retinopathy and neuropathy （odds ratio）. In our study, the association between glycemic control and diabetic complications with periodontitis was observed.

Objective: Coagulation factor vii(Fvii) triggers the extrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. In our previous study, we showed that Fvii plays an important role in tumorigenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). However, the role of Fvii polymorphism in HCC is still unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between HCC carcinogenesis and single nucleotide polymorphism of ***: Thirty-seven HCC patients and 30 healthy donors were recruited in this study. Four common Fvii gene polymorphisms– a decanucleotide insertion at position –323(–323 ins10-bp), a G to T substitution at position –401(–401 G/T), a G to A substitution at position –402(–402 G/A), and a T to C substitution at position –122(–122 T/C) – were analyzed by sequencing or commercialized assays using genomic DNA isolated from blood samples. Clinicopathological parameters between control and HCC subjects were compared according to the specific ***: The most common nucleotide variation was –402 G/A. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between healthy controls and HCC subjects for all four polymorphisms in terms of genotype distribution and allele frequencies,indicating that these polymorphisms may not affect HCC tumorigenesis. Furthermore, no association was found between–402 G/A polymorphisms and tumor stage, recurrence, and overall ***: Our results indicate that Fvii polymorphisms may not be a key factor that clinically impact tumorigenesis and outcomes of HCC, although further investigations should be conducted to confirm our findings.

Spermatogonial stem cells （SSCs） divide continuously to support spermatogenesis throughout postnatal life and transmit genetic information to the next generation. Here, we report the successful establishment of the method for the isolation and identification of human SSCs from testicular tissue, and to determine the culture conditions required to expand SSCs on human embryonic stem cell-derived fibroblast-like cells （hdFs）. Large-scale cultures of SSCs were maintained on hdF feeder layers and expanded in the presence of a combination of cytokines and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor for at least 2 months. Cell surface marker analysis showed that SSCs retained high levels of alkaline phosphatase activity and stained strongly for anti-stage-specific embryonic antigen （SSEA）-1, OCT4 and CD49f. They also expressed the genes OCT4, SOX3 and STRA8 as detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） analysis. These data clearly illustrate a novel approach for the growth of human SSCs using hdFs as feeder cells, potentially eliminating xenogeneic contaminants. This system provides a new opportunity for the study of the regulatory mechanism of the ‘niche＇ that governs SSC self-renewal, and will be a valuable source of SSCs for potential clinical applications.

Absorption characteristics of new solvent based on a blend of AMP and 1,8-diamino-p-menthane for CO_2 absorption

Aqueous 1,8-diamino-p-menthane （KIER-C3） and commercially available amine solutions were tested for CO2 absorption. A 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol （AMP） solution with an addition of KIER-C3 showed 9.3% and 31.6% higher absorption rate for CO2 than the AMP solution with an addition of monoethanolamine （meA） and ammonia （NH3）, respectively. The reaction rate constant for CO2 absorption by the AMP/KIER-C3 solution was determined by the following equation： k2,AMP/C3 = 7.702×106 exp （-2248.03/T）. A CO2 loading ratio of the AMP/KIER-C3 solution was also 2 and 3.4-times higher than that of the AMP/NH3 solution and the AMP/meA solution, respectively. Based on the experimental results, KIER-C3 may be used as an excellent additive to increase CO2 absorption capability of AMP.

Short-term clinical outcomes of laparoscopic vs open rectal excision for rectal cancer: A systematic review and metaanalysis

AIM To review evidence on the short-term clinical outcomes of laparoscopic(LRR) vs open rectal resection(ORR) for rectal *** A systematic literature search was performed using Cochrane Central Register, meDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Open Grey and Clinical *** register for randomized clinical trials(RCTs) comparing LRR vs ORR for rectal cancer and reporting short-term clinical outcomes. Articles published in English from January 1, 1995 to June, 30 2016 that met the selection criteria were retrieved and reviewed. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and meta-Analysis(PRISMA) statements checklist for reporting a systematic review was followed. Random-effect models were used to estimate mean differences and risk ratios. The robustness and heterogeneity of the results were explored by performing sensitivity analyses. The pooledeffect was considered significant when P mean operative time was 36.67 min longer(95%CI: 27.22-46.11, P mean estimated blood loss was 88.80 ml lower(95%CI:-117.25 to-60.34, P mean incision length was 11.17 cm smaller(95%CI:-13.88 to-8.47, P med by sensitivity analyses that focused on the four major RCTs. The mean length of hospital stay was 1.71 d shorter(95%CI:-2.84 to-0.58, P ment) was 0.68 d shorter(95%CI:-1.00 to-0.36, P meters. The overall quality of the evidence was rated as high. CONCLUSION LRR is associated with lesser blood loss, smaller incision length, and longer operative times compared to ORR. No differences are observed for postoperative morbidity and mortality.
