Sulfonation of （1 →6）-β-D-Glucan （Lasiodiplodan） and Its Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Potential

The objective of this study was to investigate the sulfonation of （1→6）-β-D-glucan （lasiodiplodan） as a potentiating mechanism for biological functionalities. Lasiodiplodan was sulfonated by the chlorosulfonic acid-pyridine method. The modified exopolysaccharide was characterized by FT-IR and 13C NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and SeM. Antioxidant activity was assessed by the methods of H2O2 and OH radical removal and reducing power. Antimicrobial potential was evaluated by the broth-microdilution method. Sulfonation resulted in a derivative with DS of 0.24. FT-IR analysis indicated the introduction of sulfonyl groups in the macromolecule structure through specific bands in the regions of 1,240 cm-1 and 810 cm-1. 13C NMR analysis suggested that sulfonation occurred at carbon 2 of the glucose residue. Sulfonation led to morphological changes in the structure of the biopolymer resulting in a heterogeneous structure with the presence of fibrils. derivatization promoted an increase in the antioxidant ability of the macromolecule, with a high OH removal potential （74.32%）. Bacteriostatic activity against e. coli （escherichia coli） and S. enterica （Salmonella enterica） typhimurium and fungicidal activity against C. albicans （Candida albicans） and C. tropicalis （Candida tropicalis） were found in the sulfonated sample. Sulfonation potentiated the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the biomacromolecule, suggesting that it is a potentiating mechanism of biological functions.

The knowledge of liminology can be applied in studies of trophic state indexes and morfoedaphic indexes as factors for determining the inference fish production in reservoirs. This work is based on the hypothesis of the trophic cascade relations, particularly related to bottom-up and top-down effect in Itaipu Reservoir (Brazil). Using the data available by Itaipu, from 1999 to 2004, analyzes of multiple regressions were accomplished to determine the relationships of the dependent and independent variables. We applied the trophic state indices (TSI) based on readings Secchi disk, total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a density for obtaining TSI medium. Morfoedaphic index was calculated based on the reading of the concentration of dissolved solids and the inference of fishing yield, from this index. The average results of the trophic state indices indicate an oligotrophic status for the entire reservoir as well as for the riverine, transition and lacustrine zones separately. The fish was yieldn estimated by the relation with cyanobacteria concentration, and this was the best variable que explained this prediction. The use of the morfoedaphic index (MeI), with the recorded catch data, predictive models can generate que estimate the fishing yield in the Itaipu Reservoir. The relations of MeI with chlorophyll-a and water transparency que Indicate this index may be a good predicting factor for future fish captures.

Application of extended Multiplicative Signal Correction to Short-Wavelength near Infrared Spectra of Moisture in Marzipan

Short-wavelength near infrared spectroscopy (SW-NIR) is a very rapid, versatile and precise technique, which can be used in many different situations and for very types of products and chemical compounds. extended multiplicative signal correction (eMSC) is a modification of the standard MSC pre-processing method that allows the separation of physical light scattering effects from chemical (vibrational) light absorbance effects in spectra. In this paper, the eMSC is applied and compared with first derivate, second derivate, MSC and SNV in combination of PLSR to obtain robust models in terms of accuracy and predict ability with a reduced calibration data set using SW-NIR spectra of moisture in marzipan. The extended Multiplicative Signal Correction—eMSC and combination methods provide the best results in terms of prediction ability and calibration SW-NIR spectra of moisture in marzipan. The best classification results were obtained by extended Multiplicative Signal Correction followed by second derivates.

The present study reports a physicochemical comparison of shade-grown and sun-grown coffee beans, under unripe, rip and roasted-ripe conditions, using electrical conductivity measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance (ePR), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover, the assessed physicochemical parameters were compared with organoleptic evaluations based on the Coffee Quality Institute protocol. The values found for electrical conductivity, leached potassium, and stable free radicals were respectively 29%, 31%, and 350% higher for shade-grown coffee beans, whereas polyphenol oxidase enzymatic activity was 23% lower. By contrast, FTIR and HPLC measurements identified higher chlorogenic acid and lipid contents in sun-grown coffee beans. Importantly, the sensorial grade attributed to roasted-ripe grains was 12% higher for sun-grown coffee. Our findings suggest that shade-grown coffee beans have undergone microorganismal activity and undesired fermentation during cultivation, which resulted in lower coffee quality. A correlation between a set of selected physicochemical properties and organoleptic properties was robustly established and could be used in the development of future coffee bean quality control protocols.

Software Tool development and Application Focusing in eDF Signal Readings and Polysomnography

The eDF+ (european Data Format Plus) is a flexible and open source data format created in order to store and exchange biomedical signals. It is known worldwide and used by a large variety of specialists in the area. eDF+ signals have been subjected to many researches of clinical interest amongst diagnosing and for treatment of diseases related to sleeping disorders. Nevertheless, more complete and user-friendly tools, which use these signals, are yet too few in the market. This paper presents a new tool developed in order to read and analyze eDF+ signals, focusing in the area of sleep disorders. It includes several features, such as organizing signal channels through previous montage customizations, sleep stage bars and graphics for analyzing the quality of sleep (hypnograms). It provides easiness in the whole process of interpretation and scoring of sleep events in polysomnography exams. The software development used the C++ language, due to its great versatility and efficiency, using Visual Studio Community 2013? as the Integrated development environment (Ide). Moreover, it implements many Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques, for instance, its own set of digital filters. This paper presents an application of Polysomnography analysis software and suggests a modification on the way to interpret the eDF+ standard and its usage.

Recycled high-strength aluminum alloys have limited use as structural materials due to poor mechanical properties. Spray forming remelting followed by hot extrusion is a promising route for reprocessing 7 xxx alloys. The 7050 alloy machining chips were spray formed, hot extruded, rotary swaged and heat-treated in order to improve mechanical properties. Microstructures, tensile properties and fatigue strength results for a 2.7 mm-diameter recycled wire are presented. Secondary phases and precipitates were investigated by XRD, SeM, eBSD, TeM and DSC. As-swaged and heat-treated(solution and aging) conditions were evaluated. Mechanical properties of both conditions outperformed AA7050 aerospace specification. Substantial grain refinement resulted from the extensive plastic deformation imposed by rotary swaging. Refined micrometric and sub-micrometric Al grains, as well as coarse and fine intermetallic precipitates were observed. Subsequent solution treatment resulted in a homogeneous, recrystallized and equiaxed microstructure with grain size of 9 μm. Nanoscale GP(I) zones and η′ phase precipitates formed after aging at 120 ℃, imparting higher tensile(586 MPa) and fatigue(198 MPa) strengths.

Single-Phase Velocity determination Based in Video and Sub-Images Processing:An Optical Flow Method Implemented with Support of a Programmed MatLab Structured Script

Important in many different sectors of the industry, the determination of stream velocity has become more and more important due to measurements precision necessity, in order to determine the right production rates, determine the volumetric production of undesired fluid, establish automated controls based on these measurements avoiding over-flooding or over-production, guaranteeing accurate predictive maintenance, etc. Difficulties being faced have been the determination of the velocity of specific fluids embedded in some others, for example, determining the gas bubbles stream velocity flowing throughout liquid fluid phase. Although different and already applicable methods have been researched and already implemented within the industry, a non-intrusive automated way of providing those stream velocities has its importance, and may have a huge impact in projects budget. Knowing the importance of its determination, this developed script uses a methodology of breaking-down real-time videos media into frame images, analyzing by pixel correlations possible superposition matches for further gas bubbles stream velocity estimation. In raw sense, the script bases itself in functions and procedures already available in MatLab, which can be used for image processing and treatments, allowing the methodology to be implemented. Its accuracy after the running test was of around 97% (ninety-seven percent);the raw source code with comments had almost 3000 (three thousand) characters;and the hardware placed for running the code was an Intel Core Duo 2.13 [Ghz] and 2 [Gb] RAM memory capable workstation. even showing good results, it could be stated that just the end point correlations were actually getting to the final solution. So that, making use of self-learning functions or neural network, one could surely enhance the capability of the application to be run in real-time without getting exhaust by iterative loops.
