BACKGROUND: dental anomalies are variations from the established well-known general anatomy and morphology of the tooth as a result of disturbances during tooth formation. They can be developmental, congenital, or acquired and may be localized to a single tooth or involve systemic conditions. AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of dental anomalies in patients who report to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) dental clinics. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used with a sample size of 92 patients aged 18 or older, obtained through convenience sampling. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 26.0. RESULTS: The study included 92 patients aged 18 to 72 years, with 47.8% males and 52.2% females. dental anomalies were observed in 51.1% of participants, with a higher prevalence in females (55.3%). The most common anomalies were diastema (48.3%), impacted teeth (22.0%), dilaceration (11.9%), and peg-shaped lateral teeth (6.8%). CONCLUSION: This study highlights the importance of conducting thorough dental examinations to identify and address dental anomalies, which may have implications for treatment. Early detection and correction of these anomalies are crucial to prevent future complications.

Phantom bite syndrome(PBS),also called occlusal dysesthesia,is characterized by persistent non-verifiable occlusal *** erroneous and unshakable belief of a“wrong bite”might impel patients to visit multiple dental clinics to meet their requirements to their ***,it takes a toll on their quality of life causing,career disruption,financial loss and suicidal *** general,patients with PBS are quite rare but distinguishable if ever *** Marbach reported the first two cases in 1976,there have been dozens of published cases regarding this phenomenon,but only a few original studies were *** the lack of official classification and guidelines,many authors agreed on the existence of a PBS“consistent pattern”that clinicians should be made ***,the treatment approach has been solely based on incomplete knowledge of etiology,in which none of the proposed theories are fully explained in all the available *** this review,we have discussed the critical role of enhancing dental professionals’awareness of this phenomenon and suggested a comprehensive approach for PBS,provided by a multidisciplinary team of dentists,psychiatrists and exclusive psychotherapists.

BACKGROUND: Permanent tooth avulsion is one of the severe forms of dental traumatic injuries. The immediate action taken at the site of the accident is crucial to the prognosis of the tooth. Replantation is considered as the treatment of choice. OBJECTIVE: The study was undertaken to assess the knowledge of parents who accompany their children to the pediatric dental clinic, KATH on the pre-hospital management of avulsed permanent tooth in children. METHODS: A researcher administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the knowledge of pre-hospital management of avulsed permanent tooth from 83 parents who accompanied their wards to the pediatric dental clinic at KATH. RESULTS: A total of 83 parents were involved in the study. 30 (36%) were males while 53 (64%) were females. The majority of the parents (57%) were either university trained or had attended college of education. Only 32 parents (39%) were aware of the possibility of replantation. Majority of the parents chose non-physiologic media as the transport media of choice and only 10% would attempt self-replantation before seeking professional help. 76 parents (92%) had no previous education on pre-hospital management of avulsed tooth. CONCLUSION: The results obtained from this study indicate that parental knowledge on pre-hospital management of avulsed permanent tooth is low hence the need for massive public educational campaigns.

Background:An affordable approach accepted worldwide to successfully treat mild maternal hyperglycemia in gestational diabetes(GDM),is diet-controlled *** no elaborate research was available,this study was crafted to investigate morphometric stereological details and to determine the mean placental oxygen diffusion capacity for patients who were kept on diet therapy for mild gestational ***:A clinical trial(NCT04907708)was conducted from January 2018 to February 2019.A total of 70 women completed the study,out of which 35 served as healthy controls as Group A and 35 were diagnosed as mild gestational diabetics according to WHO criteria(Group B).These patients were kept on a restricted calorie diet with light exercise during gestation and were followed regularly during *** after delivery,conserved placentas underwent complete gross,microscopic,and stereological investigations with the point and intersection-counting ***:Significant differences were observed for placental width and syncytial knots(p<0.010 and 0.025 respectively)between the groups on gross and light *** of the parameters were non-significant,though numerically more in the GDM *** stereological details,mean placental volume,mean placental components volumes(villi,inter-villous space,fetal capillary,and fetal connective tissue),mean villi and mean fetal capillary diameter,mean villi and capillary surface density and mean morphometric diffusing capacity of placenta showed non-significant results between the ***:Minimal changes were observed in gross,microscopy,and morphometric stereological details in the placentae of GDM patients managed with nutritional therapy during gestation compared with the healthy controls.

Snake venoms are folk medicines used since ages. The components of snake venoms have high specific affinity and actions on cells and cell components. Also snake venoms are largely cytotoxic to tumor cells than normal cells. In addition to these, they have several therapeutic actions that make them an attractive option in the management of cancer. The advent of modern technologies has greatly helped in extracting and identifying new components of therapeutic interests in short time. The article highlights the importance of snake venoms in the management of cancer, so as to motivate curious researchers to devote their skills in this fascinating area. This in turn may bring hope, smile and relief to several cancer patients in future.

*** Following the global COVID-19 emergency,another public health emergency was declared by the World Health Organization on July 23,2022:“monkeypox.”Monkeypox virus(MPXV)belongs to the Poxviridae family and causes monkeypox,a disease clinically similar to smallpox.[1,2]Monkeypox was discovered in 1958 after two outbreaks of poxlike disease in research colonies of *** first known human infection was in 1970 in a newborn in the Democratic Republic of Congo.[3]Monkeypox began to reemerge in 2022,and the evolution of the outbreak is worrisome,as it does not seem that the pandemic,which has affected large numbers of people worldwide,is slowing down *** reported more than 57,000 cases and approximately 22 deaths on September 13.[4]Animal-to-human and human-to-human transmissions are two possible routes of transmission for *** to the clinicians,intimate sexual contact was the suspected route of transmission for the MPXV in 95% of *** or bisexual men,as well as other men who have sex with men,have been particularly hard hit by the current *** with smallpox,symptoms are similar but less severe and include pustular skin lesions,fever,headache,myalgia,and *** rash usually begins on the lips and spreads to the face and then to the limbs in a circular pattern.

Nicotine is a source of exogenous oxidative stress, which is associated with the pathogenesis of numerous diseases including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), whereas an antioxidant protein, peroxiredoxin 1 (Prx 1), plays an important role in the modulation of this condition. This study was to investigate the association between Prx 1 and tobacco-induced oxidative stress. The expression of Prx 1 and GST in OSCC Tca8113 cells, which were pre-treated with nicotine, was determined. In the present study, MTT assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, RT-PCR and Western blot analyses, respectively, were conducted to assess cell viability, ROS level, and expression level of Prx 1 and GST in nicotine-treated Tca8113 cells. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF- B) expression was detected by immuno-fluorescence. Our results showed the growth of Tca8113 cells was increased in a dose-dependent manner when cells were treated with nicotine at concentrations from 0.1 to 10 mol/L, but the proliferation of the cells decreased at 100 mol/L. ROS levels increased in all groups treated with nicotine at concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10, or 100 mol/L for 24h. Prx 1 and GST mRNA and protein expression were up-regulated in cells treated with nicotine for the same time at different concentrations or at the same concentration for different times (P<0.05). NF-B was translocated from cytoplasm to nucleus, the expression of NF- B was increased in nucleus. These results suggest that up-regulation of Prx1 expression appears to be associated with tobacco-induced oxidative stress, which may play an important role in the pathogenesis of OSCC.

Aim The piezoelectric properties and cytotoxicity of a porous lead-free piezoelectric ceramic for use as a direct bone substitute were investigated. Methodology Cold isostatic pressing （CIP） was applied to fabricate porous lithium sodium potassium niobate （Li0.06Na0.5K0.44） NbO3 specimens using a pore-forming method. The morphologies of the CIP-processed specimens were characterized and compared to those of specimens made by from conventional pressing procedures. The effects of the ceramic on the attachment and proliferation of osteoblasts isolated from the cranium of 1-day-old Sprague- Dawley rats were examined by a scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and metbylthiazol tetrazolium （MTT） assay. Results The results showed that CIP enhanced piezoelectricity and biological performance of the niobate specimen, and also promoted an extracellular matrix-like topography of it. In vitro studies showed that the CIP-enhanced material had positive effects on the attachment and proliferation of osteoblasts. Conclusion Niobate ceramic generated by CIP shows a promise for being a piezoelectric composite bone substitute.
