Left-turn phasing selection considering vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to pedestrian conflicts

Left-turning vehicle movement at signalized intersections with permissive left-turn phases creates safety concerns due to the higher chance of conflict with opposing-through vehicles and *** this research,a simulation-based study was conducted to evaluate pedestrians’impact on traffic conflicts between left-turning vehicles and opposing-through vehicles(V-V conflicts)as well as traffic conflicts between left-turning vehicles and pedestrians(V-P conflicts)in the permissive left-turn phasing *** with different opposing-through volumes,left-turn volumes,number of opposing-through lanes,and pedestrian volumes were modeled in VISSIM,a traffic *** surrogate safety assessment model(SSAM)was used to estimate the number of V-V and VP *** effect of pedestrian presence on V-V and V-P conflicts was evaluated using simulation scenarios with and without pedestrian *** results revealed that pedestrian presence increased both V-V and V-P *** pedestrian presence increased the total number of traffic conflicts,permissive left-turn phasing processed fewer left-turn vehicles to maintain the same level of intersection safety with pedestrian presence compared to the no-pedestrian *** current left-turn phasing decision guidelines do not consider the impacts of pedestrian presence,this research quantified pedestrian-influenced and pedestrian-involved left-turn traffic conflicts to determine appropriate left-turn signal phasing decisions to ensure safe and efficient crossing of pedestrians and vehicles at signalized *** simulation-based study’s findings can be beneficial in the decision making of left-turn phasing selection as the before-after intersection safety performance analysis by collecting field data often resources intensive.

Statistical extremes and peak factors in wind-induced vibration of tall buildings

In the structural design of tall buildings,peak factors have been widely used to predict mean extreme responses of tall buildings under wind ***'s peak factor is directly related to an explicit measure of structural reliability against a Gaussian response *** review the use of this factor for time-variant reliability design by comparing it to the conventional davenport's peak *** on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes,a new closed-form peak factor,the so-called Gamma peak factor,can be obtained for a non-Gaussian resultant response characterized by a Rayleigh distribution *** the Gamma peak factor,a combined peak factor method was developed for predicting the expected maximum resultant responses of a building undergoing lateral-torsional *** effects of the standard deviation ratio of two sway components and the inter-component correlation on the evaluation of peak resultant response were also *** wind tunnel data derived from synchronous multi-pressure measurements,we carried out a wind-induced time history response analysis of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council(CAARC) standard tall building to validate the applicability of the Gamma peak factor to the prediction of the peak resultant *** from the building example indicated that the use of the Gamma peak factor enables accurate predictions to be made of the mean extreme resultant acceleration responses for dynamic serviceability performance design of modern tall buildings.

This paper aims to reduce the wind resistance of the self-designed offshore tourism platform by optimizing its superstructure,and a transparent shape design is finally suggested.A numerical simulation was performed to calculate the wind load on the platform to test the effect of wind resistance *** original scale models(sealed and transparent)were established in accordance with the design *** numerical simulation uses the FLUENT software combined with the built-in self-compiled user-defined function(UDF).The stochastic wind was also applied on the basis of the davenport wind *** detached eddy simulation(DES)model was used to solve the NS *** simulation results show that the wind resistance reduction for the transparent shape model is subtle in the horizontal direction but can effectively reduce the drag force and moment in the vertical ***,the force variation of the transparent shape model under different wind attack angles decreases,which reduces the wind load fluctuations.

Extreme value of wind-excited response considering influence of bandwidth

This paper addresses the peak factors of wind- excited responses including alongwind, acrosswind tall building responses and vortex-induced vibration considering the bandwidth parameter. The influence of bandwidth parameter on the peak factor is investigated using advanced upcrossing theory taking the bandwidth influence into account. Results show that davenport＇s formula without consideration of bandwidth parameter servers well in general. However, the advanced upcrossing theory leads to a better prediction of the peak factor of wind-induced response of very lightly damped buildings.

Low phase noise hybrid silicon mode-locked lasers

In this paper, we review recent results on hybrid silicon mode-locked lasers with a focus on low phase noise optical pulse generation. Taking a high level design approach to lowering phase noise, we show the need for long on-chip optical delay lines for mode-locked lasers to reach and overcome material limits. Key results include demonstration of the longest （cavity length 9 cm） integrated on-chip mode locked laser, 14 dB reduction of Lorentzian noise on a 20 GHz radio-frequency （RF） signal, and greater than 55 dB optical supermode noise suppres- sion using harmonically mode locked long cavity laser, 10 GHz passively mode locked laser with 15 kHz linewidth using on-chip all optical feedback stabilization.

Evaluating the environmental impact of selected chemical de-icers

In this study,the environmental impacts of six commercial chloride-based de-icer products,including Rock Salt and Salt Brine,were *** nutrients,oxygen demand,heavy metal concentration,corrosion and toxicity of all six de-icers were *** an assumed 500-fold dilution,the test results were compared to the public water-quality *** results show that the selected chemical de-icers have little chance of severely damaging the environment and ecosystem under a normal dilution ***,attention needs to be paid to small water bodies and sensitive receiving water.
