Chinese fir(Cunninghamia lanceolate[Lamb.]Hook.)is a fast-growing species which is not only important as a timber-supplier,but also as an available sink for carbon(C)storage in *** age and density are two critical factors that can determine tree C sequestration as interrelated drivers through natural *** were planted using 1-year-old bare-root seedlings at the initial density of 1800 stems ha^(-1)in a 15-ha montane area of Hunan Province,China in *** plantation was thinned twice 10 and 20 years after planting to leave trees of437.5±26.6,675.0±155.2 and 895.8±60.1 stems ha^(-1)as low,medium,and high densities,*** height and diameter at breast height(DBH)were measured every2 years beginning from 23 years(2009)to 31 years(2018)after establishment,timber volume(TV)and biomass C were estimated *** did not find any interactive effect of age and density on any variables except for *** TV and biomass C increased with stand age or decreased in higher *** allometric heightDBH relationship can be fitted by an exponential risingto-maximum model with higher maximum value over *** decline of biomass C along density fit with the inverse first-order polynomial model which indicated that at least1300-1500 stems ha^(-1)may be needed to maximize TV and biomass C for a longer term over 20 ***,to control the density to a reasonable level,over 1300 stems ha^(-1)in a rotation over 20 years old will be practical for tree biomass C in Chinese fir plantations.

Researches and analyses were carried on the mechanism of forest edge effect by the classification of its types in forest ecosystem. Two kinds of practical models were put forward to extricate forestry from 'Two Crisises' and increase the utilization efficiency of solar energy and the net primary productivity on unit area by combination forest edge effect theory with forestry production. 1. Cultivating fast growth and rich yield plantation directionally in optimal community structure by use of forest edge effect theory. 2. Establishing artificial-natural compound forest community by openning up effect belts in natural secondary forest.

In order to improve the quality of seedlings and economic benefits,rare--earth experiments were carried out on eleven seedling-age-types of four silvicultral *** indexes such as the increment,biomass and chlorophyl content *** results showed that rare-earth can improve the growth in height anddiameter,increase the bioprductivity and increase the mean benefit by887766.29 yuan/hm^*** is an effective method to improve the quality of seedlings for the characters such as lowcost and easy *** the method can be widely used in seedling.

Under the condition of absolute dry, more than thirty forest fuel pararneters,ash content. extract and burning point were measured. Protection efficiency assessment and quality of coastal shelterbelt for Dongshan Island at the coastal section scale

The coastal shelter forest in China is under threat of destruction and degradation because of the impact of human activities. Protection efficiency assessment of the coastal shelterbelt is an important component of shelterforest remediation planning and sustainable management. In this study, a protection efficiency index （PEI） model was established using the projection pursuit method to assess the protective quality of the coastal shelter forest at the coastal section scale of Dongshan Island, China. Three criteria were used, including forest stand structure, forest belt structure, and windbreak effect; each criterion further comprised multiple factors. Based on survey data of 31 plots in the coastal shelter forest of Dongshan Island, we calculated PEI values using a projection of a pursuit model. The result showed 64.5 % of the PEIs fell at or below the middle level, which can indicate the status of the coastal shelterbelt is unsatisfactory. To further explore whether the different bays and land use types create significant differences in PEIs and evaluation indices, we used an ANOVA to test the influence of various bays and forms of land use on coastal shelterbelts. The results showed that PEI and most of the indices differed significantly by bay; mean tree height, mean DBH, mean crown width, stand density, vegetation coverage, and wind velocity reduction differed significantly by land use. Therefore, relevant measures for different locations, bays and surrounding land use can be proposed to improve the existing conditions of the coastal shelterbelt. The results of this study provide a theoretical and technical framework for future changes and sustainable management of coastal shelterbelt on Dongshan Island.

Afforestation and reforestation are effective and ecological ways of mitigating elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO2) concentration and increasing carbon(C) storage in terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, we measured the above-ground(tree, herbaceous plants and litter) and below-ground(root and soil) C storage in an aspen plantation(Populus davidiana) monoculture(PD), a larch plantation(Larix pincipis-rupprechtii) monoculture(LP), a pine plantation(Pinus tabulaeformis) monoculture(PT), a larch and birch mixed plantation(L. pincipis-rupprechtii and Betula platyphlla mixed)(MLB), and an apricot plantation(Armeniaca sibirica) monoculture(AS) under the Desertification Combating Program in Hebei Province, the northern China. The objective was to assess the effect of afforestation species on ecosystem C pools of different plantation types. Results showed that C storage of LP stand(258.0 Mg/ha) and MLB(163.4 Mg/ha) were significantly higher than the C storage in PD(45.5 Mg/ha), PT(58.9 Mg/ha) and AS(49.4 Mg/ha), respectively. Soil C was the main carbon pool of the ecosystem C storage in the five plantation stands, ranging from 31.4 Mg/ha to 232.5 Mg/ha, which accounted for 69.0%–90.1% of the total ecosystem C storage. The C storage in tree layer was about 5.2%–23.2% of ecosystem C storage. The herbaceous plants and litter layers contained 1.0%–6.0% and 1.5%–3.3% of ecosystem C storage, respectively. Our results suggest that tree species should be incorporated to accurately develop regional C budget of afforestation program, and also imply that substantial differences in ecosystem C stocks among plantation types can facilitate decision making on C management.

Understanding genetic variation is important for efficiently selecting excellent clones and utilizing genetic resources during tree breeding. We investigated 16 growth traits of 50 32-year-old Pinus koraiensis clones. Analyses of variance showed that all the test traits differed significantly among clones. Average height, diameter at breast height(DBH), and volume of all clones were 10.41 m, 21.30 cm,and 0.148 m3, respectively. Phenotypic coefficients of variation and repeatabilities of traits ranged from 4.37 to48.03% and from 0.013 to 0.900, respectively. There exists significant positive correlations among heights, diameter at different heights(1.3, 3.0, 5.0 m), and volumes; genetic correlation was close to phenotype correlation. Using four growth traits(height, DBH, volume, average crown width)as indices for a comprehensive evaluation, five clones(PK11, PK 19, PK 04, PK 14, and PK 28), whose traits scored in the top 10%, were selected as elite clones. For these clones,genetic gains in height, DBH, volume and crown height were 8.58, 13.02, 32.72 and 3.83%, respectively. These results provide important information for improving *** breeding programs.

If some suitable treatments are used plantations can be grown and established on the soil of soda-saline-alkali with the soil condition of PH 8.5- 9.6, salinity 0.1-0.3% and normality ratio of saline base Na+ / ( Ca+++ Mg++)≥4. From the results of plot inventory and tree stem analysis, the increment of Poplus simonigra is highest. For 9 years, the volume can reach 100 m3/ha, the biomass (above ground) can reach 28.7 ton/ha. Poplus simonigra grows very well on the all kinds of soda-saline-alkali soils except for the alkali spot with the worst soil condition. So Poplus simonigra is a good tree species for planting on the soil of soda-saline-alkali.

From field investigations and inoculations, Dothistroma pini, the pathogen of Dothistroma needle blight was found to overwinter as mycelium and unmaturcd accrvuli in infected needles. The conidia were sprcadcd mainly by rain splash. The disease became widespread by transporting diseased seedlings and scions, conidia spread throughout the growing season, but mainly from May to July. The disease was found in both stand locations in each summer of investigation. The outbreak severity was serious in pure stands of susceptible pine and mixed stunds with large components of susceptible pine, but slight in mixed stands of unsusceptible species with small components of susceptible hosts. The disease was less severe in pruned stands than in unpruned stands. The disease was most serious near the infection centre. indoor and outdoor tests, it was shown that Chlorothalonil smoke, Chlorothalonil spray and Thiram and Asomate sprays were effective control fungicides.
