34 samples of Ru Guan porcelain body and 50 samples of Jun Guan porcelain body (both kinds being in different body colors) were selected with the purpose of finding out the source of raw materials and their classification relationship so as to search for ways of non-destructive discrimination. Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been applied to these samples to determine their chemical elements. The data of seven major chemical elements collected from these samples were further studied through fuzzy cluster analysis. Results indicate that the origin of raw materials of Jun Guan porcelain body samples is comparatively more concentrated in certain places, while that of Ru Guan porcelain body samples is scattered about. The places of origin of raw materials of the majority of Ru Guan and Jun Guan porcelain body samples have something in common, but some differences still exist. It might be an important way for non-destructive discrimination among Ru Guan and Jun Guan porcelains by combining PIXE with fuzzy cluster analysis.

The proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) is used to determine the chemical ingredients of seven main elements in the samples of Ru Guan porcelain glazes and Ru Civil porcelain from Qingliangsi kiln in Baofeng County and the samples of celadon glaze from Zhanggongxiang kiln in Ruzhou City. The PIXE data are then analyzed by scatter analysis and fuzzy cluster method for determining their classification and provenance. The results show that there are obvious differences between the ingredients of glaze material of Ru Guan porcelain and Ru Civil porcelain from Qingliangsi kiln, of which the former ingredients are stable and its source is localized, and that the sources and ingredients of the glaze of Ru Guan porcelain and those of celadon glaze from Zhanggongxiang kiln are not wholly the same, of which the latter sources are much scattering.

The characteristic spectrum and its main wavelength of Ru porcelain glaze are measured by color difference instrument to determine the relations between glaze color and its main wavelength. The content of the 30 coloring elements in Ru porcelain is determined by neutron activation analysis (NAA), which showed that iron is the major coloring element. Mossbauer spectroscopy analysis shows that the iron element in the glaze exists in the form of structural iron (Fe2+, Fe3+). The quantitative relationship between the main wavelength of glaze in various colors and the relative content of structural iron (Fe2+/Fe3+) is determined. Thus the coloring mechanism of Ru porcelain is investigated entirely.

The cross section of the Ru Porcelain sherds is analyzed from glaze to body for main elemental contents with EDXRF probe line scanning method. It is found that a midst layer with great variety of elemental contents exists from glaze to body. Furthermore, every elemental content changes continuously and each has different shapes with different jumping-off points and end- points. It is certain that the midst layer is formed during the process of porcelain firing, when vitreous glaze infiltrates into the surface of porcelain body. It also well fits the phenomenon observed through different microscopes (stereo-microscope, polarizing microscope and SEM).

More than ten thousands of bone fragments were recovered from the Lingjing site, henan province.during 2005 and 2006. In this paper, through the quantification and statistical analyses of the skeletal elements of the two predominant species in this assemblage, aurochs (Bos primigenius) and horse (Equus caballus), the differential influences and weights of a variety of taphonomic agencies in the formation of the assemblage are assessed respectively. Compared to the natural agencies, hominid hunting and the subsequent disarticulation, slaughtering, and their transport of the bone elements of the prey species are the main factors accounting for the formation of the present assemblage. More importantly, this study initiatively identifies hominid's differential treatment of the bones of aurochs and horse in the Paleolithic record of East Asia and demonstrably suggests that hominids at the site have already practiced sophisticated hunting techniques and subsistence strategies and may be quite familiar with the ecological and anatomical characteristics and nutritional values of the large-sized prey animals and can accordingly take different processing and handling strategies at the hunting site.

The emergence of the"Ancient State"is considered an important stage in the discourse on human *** on its complex and hierarchical social structure,the Shuanghuaishu site of henan province.is regarded as an"Ancient state",specifically the"Heluo Ancient State".The site is situated in the middle reaches of the Yellow River region and played a key role in prehistoric ***,the reasons behind its decline are ***,we conducted an integrated investigation of the archaeological excavations and archaeoseismic analyses at the Shuanghuaishu *** identified paleoseismic remains within paleo-artificial moats,which were formed owing to off-fault structures of soil liquefaction,hillslope landslides,and related ground fractures,along with shake-related wall disruption and building collapse in the residential *** dating was conducted to constrain the age for this earthquake event,which was determined to be approximately 5.0 cal kyr ***,based on the practical curve for earthquake-induced liquefaction,the preliminary estimate of the magnitude of this paleo seismic event is greater than M_(s)*** propose that the Shuanghuaishu site experienced a recession after the earthquake event,which may have influenced the continuous development of the"Heluo Ancient State"as a regional center settlement.

Due to the South-to-North Water Diversion Project,the salvage archaeological excavations were conducted in Xuecun,Xingyang city,henan province.china,by the institute of cultural relics and Archaeology of henan province.in 2005 and *** evidence for a paleoearthquake was found during the excavation in the Xuecun archaeological *** evidence includes faults,two small grabens and a series of ground *** geological structures are considered to be generated by the *** on the relationship between the paleoseismic relics and the cultural layers excavated in the site,we inferred that the earthquake took place in the early Shang Dynasty (the Erligang period).The AMS 14C dates of charcoal from ash pits in the site indicate that the earthquake occurred between 1260 BC and 1520 *** paleoearthquake during this period was first discovered in the Central Plain of *** discovery not only extents the scope of paleoseismic investigation,but also provides valuable information for safety evaluation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

The eye-beads dating to the early Warring States Period unearthed from Xu Jialing Tomb in Xichuan County of henan province. china are studied. The structure and the chemical composition of the sam- ples are analysed by the undestructive methods of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique. The results show that these eye-beads are of glass state. Its chemical composition indicates that they belong to the glass of soda lime silicate system (Na2O-CaO-SiO2). By comparing the decorative design and the chemical composition of the samples with those from ancient Babylon and ancient Egypt, we think that these ancient eye-beads in Xichuan were most possibly im- ported from the West.
