Effects of plant diversity on greenhouse gas emissions in microcosms simulating vertical constructed wetlands with high ammonium loading

Wastewater with relatively high nitrogen concentrations is a major source of nitrous oxide(N_2O) and methane(CH_4) emissions and exerts multiple stresses on the environment.Studies have shown that plant diversity plays an important role in ecosystem functioning.However, the effects of plant species diversity on CH_4 and N_2O emissions under high ammonium(NH_4^+-N) loading rates remain unclear. In this study, a microcosm experiment simulating vertical constructed wetlands supplied with high NH_4^+-N water levels was established. The treatments included four species richness levels(1, 2, 3, 4) and 15 species compositions. There was no significant relationship between species richness and N_2O emissions. However, N_2O emissions were significantly reduced by specific plant species composition. Notably, the communities with the presence of Rumex japonicus L. reduced N_2O emissions by 62% compared to communities without this species. This reduction in N_2O emissions may have been a result of decreased N concentrations and increased plant biomass. CH_4 emissions did not respond to plant species richness or species identity.Overall, plant species identity surpassed species richness in lowering N_2O emissions from constructed wetlands with high NH_4^+-N water. The results also suggest that communities with R. japonicus could achieve higher N removal and lower greenhouse gas emissions than other wetland species.

The development of bio-adsorbents with highly selective immobilization properties for specific heavy metals is a great challenge,but has important application value.Biogenic whewellite(BW)with high selectivity for Pb(Ⅱ)was synthesized by mineral microbial transformation.The selective immobilization properties and mechanism of BW for Pb(Ⅱ)were analyzed by combining mineral characterization technology and batch adsorption research methods.The results indicated that BW can efficiently and selectively immobilize Pb(Ⅱ)in single or composite heavy metal adsorption solutions,and the immobilized Pb(Ⅱ)is difficult to desorb.BW undergoes monolayer adsorption on Pb(Ⅱ),Qmax≈1073.17 mg/g.The immobilization of Pb(Ⅱ)by BW is a physico-chemical adsorption process with spontaneous heat absorption and an accompanying increase in entropy.In addition,the sequestration of Pb(Ⅱ)by BW remains around 756.99 mg/g even at p H=1.The excellent selective immobilization properties of BW for Pb(Ⅱ)are closely related to its smaller Ksp,electrostatic repulsion effect,organic-inorganic composite structure,acid resistance and the formation of Pb(Ⅱ)oxalate.This study provides beneficial information about the recycling of lead in acidic lead-containing wastewater and composite heavy metal contaminated water bodies.

Microglia are the resident macrophages of the central nervous system.Microglia possess varied morphologies and functions.Under normal physiological conditions,microglia mainly exist in a resting state and constantly monitor their microenvironment and survey neuronal and synaptic activity.Through the C1 q,C3 and CR3"Eat Me"and CD47 and SIRPα"Don't Eat Me"complement pathways,as well as other pathways such as CX3 CR1 signaling,resting microglia regulate synaptic pruning,a process crucial for the promotion of synapse formation and the regulation of neuronal activity and synaptic plasticity.By mediating synaptic pruning,resting microglia play an important role in the regulation of experience-dependent plasticity in the barrel cortex and visual cortex after whisker removal or monocular deprivation,and also in the regulation of learning and memory,including the modulation of memory strength,forgetfulness,and memory quality.As a response to brain injury,infection or neuroinflammation,microglia become activated and increase in number.Activated microglia change to an amoeboid shape,migrate to sites of inflammation and secrete proteins such as cytokines,chemokines and reactive oxygen species.These molecules released by microglia can lead to synaptic plasticity and learning and memory deficits associated with aging,Alzheimer's disease,traumatic brain injury,HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder,and other neurological or mental disorders such as autism,depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.With a focus mainly on recently published literature,here we reviewed the studies investigating the role of resting microglia in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory,as well as how activated microglia modulate disease-related plasticity and learning and memory deficits.By summarizing the function of microglia in these processes,we aim to provide an overview of microglia regulation of synaptic plasticity and learning and memory,and to discuss the possibility of microglia manipulation as a therapeutic to ameliorate cognitive d

Implantable bioelectronics for analyzing physiological biomarkers has recently been recognized as a promising technique in medical treatment or diagnostics. In this study, we developed a self-powered implantable skinlike glucometer for real-time detection of blood glucose level in vivo. Based on the piezo-enzymatic-reaction coupling effect of GOx@ZnO nanowire, the device under an applied deformation can actively output piezoelectric signal containing the glucose-detecting information. No external electricity power source or battery is needed for this device, and the outputting piezoelectric voltage acts as both the biosensing signal and electricity power. A practical application of the skin-like glucometer implanted in mouse body for detecting blood glucose level has been simply demonstrated. These results provide a new technique path for diabetes prophylaxis and treatment.

Global gaps in age data based on skeletochronology for amphibians

Individual age and population age composition are the major concerns of ecologists,evolutionary biologists and conservation biologists.In amphibians,skeletochronology-counting the number of lines of arrested growth deposited in the bone tissue,is the dominant method to determine actual age of an individual.Since 1970s,age data of the ectothermic taxa have been accumulated and increasingly used in comparative studies.Here we make a global assessment for the availability of the data,based on a collection of 369 published papers.For a specific species,more males than females were sampled.Among the extant 8146 amphibian species,only 266(3.3%)have been skeletochronologically investigated.Of these studied species,2(0.9%of 214)belong to caecilians,56(7.6%of 740)salamanders and 208(2.9%of 7192)anurans.A complete paucity of data was seen in 80%,50%,and 54%of families in the corresponding orders.More temperate species than tropical species were sampled,while the proportion of Palearctic species studied was higher than that in the other 5 biogeographical realms.Species inhabiting semi-aquatic niche were more likely to be studied than fossorial or plant dwellers.Age information of multiple populations(2-48)was available for species with a broad distribution,accounts for 61%of salamander and 43%of anuran species studied.Because these gaps in demographic knowledge can limit our understanding of questions ranging from life history evolution,population dynamics to conservation,we encourage herpetologists to pay more efforts on filling them.

In vertebrates,body weight increases many folds as a consequence of body growth from the childhood to adulthood（e.g.,～20 folds for a mouse）.Considering the fact that the liver-to-body weight ratio（LBR）stays relatively constant within species（Weglarz and Sandgren,2000;Kan et al.,2009）,the cell number in a liver must therefore keep increasing along with the growth of an individual organism. For example, during the growth of the zebrafish from 5 days post-fertilization （dpf） to 1.5 years old, the number of liver cells increased -900 folds （Figs. 1A and S1 ）.

Accurate authentication of Dendrobium officinale and its closely related species by comparative analysis of complete plastomes

Owing to its great medicinal and ornamental values, Dendrobium officinale is frequently adulterated with other Dendrobium species on the market. Unfortunately, the utilization of the common DNA markers ITS,ITS2, and mat Ktrbc L is unable to distinguish D. officinale from 5 closely related species of it(D. tosaense, D.shixingense, D. flexicaule, D. scoriarum and D. aduncum). Here, we compared 63 Dendrobium plastomes comprising 40 newly sequenced plastomes of the 6 species and 23 previously published plastomes. The plastomes of D. officinale and its closely related species were shown to have conserved genome structure and gene content. Comparative analyses revealed that small single copy region contained higher variation than large single copy and inverted repeat regions, which was mainly attributed to the loss/retention of ndh genes.Furthermore, the intraspecific sequence variability among different Dendrobium species was shown to be diversified, which necessitates a cautious evaluation of genetic markers specific for different Dendrobium species.By evaluating the maximum likelihood trees inferred from different datasets, we found that the complete plastome sequence dataset had the highest discriminatory power for D. officinale and its closely related species,indicating that complete plastome sequences can be used to accurately authenticate Dendrobium species.& 2018 Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical sciences. The structure of N-glycans on specific proteins can regulate innate and adaptive immunity via sensing environmental signals.Meanwhile,the structural diversity of N-glycans poses analytical challenges that limit the exploration of specific glycosylation functions.In this work,we used THP-1-derived macrophages as examples to show the vast potential of a N-glycan structural interpretation tool StrucGP in N-glycoproteomic analysis.The intact glycopeptides of macrophages were enriched and analyzed using mass spectrometry(MS)-based glycoproteomic approaches,followed by the large-scale mapping of site-specific glycan structures via StrucGP.Results revealed that bisected GlcNAc,core fucosylated,and sialylated glycans(e.g.,HexNAc4Hex5Fuc1Neu5Ac1,N4H5F1S1)were increased in M1 and M2 macrophages,especially in the latter.The findings indicated that these structures may be closely related to macrophage polarization.In addition,a high level of glycosylated PD-L1 was observed in M1 macrophages,and the LacNAc moiety was detected at Asn-192 and Asn-200 of PD-L1,and Asn-200 contained Lewis epitopes.The precision structural interpretation of site-specific glycans and subsequent intervention of target glycoproteins and related glycosyltransferases are of great value for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for different diseases.
