Cnidarians diverged very early in animal evolution;therefore,investigations of the morphology and trophic levels of early fossil cnidarians may provide critical insights into the evolution of metazoans and the origin of modern marine food ***,there has been a lack of unambiguous anthozoan cnidarians from Ediacaran assemblages,and undoubted anthozoans from the Cambrian radiation of metazoans are very rare and lacking in ecological ***,we report a new polypoid cnidarian,Nailiana elegans *** ***.,represented by multiple solitary specimens from the early Cambrian Chengjiang biota(-520 Ma)of South *** specimens show eight unbranched tentacles surrounding a single opening into the gastric cavity,which may have born multiple ***,*** displays a level of organization similar to that of extant *** analyses place *** in the stem lineage of Anthozoa and suggest that the ancestral anthozoan was a soft-bodied,solitary polyp showing octoradial ***,one specimen of the new polyp preserves evidence of predation on an epifaunal lingulid *** case provides the oldest direct evidence of macrophagous predation,the advent of which may have triggered the emergence of complex trophic/ecological relationships in Cambrian marine communities and spurred the explosive radiation of animal body plans.

It was conducted the comparison of palynological assemblages of the Middle Tsagayan,Upper Tsagayan subformations,Furao and Wuyun formations from Zeya-Bureya Basin of Amur (Heilongjiang) River region with assemblages obtained from the marine deposits of Northeast Russia,Sakhalin,Kuril,and Hokkaido Islands,dated by ammonites,foraminifers and other invertebrates. Based on detail correlation,the geological age of the terrestrial beds was defined. The guide fossils are recognized Marsypiletes cretacea,Tricolpites variexi- nus,Aquilapollenites conatus,A. stelkii,A. rombicus,Integricorpus bellum,Pseudointegricorpus clarireticula- tus,Triprojectus amoenus,Orbiculapollis lucidus,Wodehouseia aspera,Quercoidites minor,which had last oc- currence in the late Maastrichtian. The Danian palynofloras usually are dominated by Triatriopollenites plicoides and T. confusus. The species Anacolosidites subtrudens,Aquilapollenites proceros,A. spinulosus have last occurrence in the Danian. The K-T (K-Pg) boundary in the terrestrial deposits is defined in the base of the Upper Tsagayan Subformation and the base of the lower part of the Wuyun Formation. The latter is represented by aleuropelite to fine-grained sandstones. The change of taxonomical composition of palynospectra in similar environments could be determined by real change of flora at the Mesozoic and Cenozoic boundary,but not by changes of lithological facies or depositional environment,generally.

Recent geological and paleontological exploration in the Indus basin of Pakistan allowed the discoveries of numerous remains of non-marine reptiles( titanosaurian sauropod,abelisaurian and noasaurian theropod dinosaurs),and marine reptiles( crocodiles),flying reptiles( pterosaurs),marine and non-marine mammals,fishes,invertebrates,and plants,especially Pakistan is relatively rich in footprints / trackways in the *** vertebrates of Indo-Pakistan are very significant for paleobiogeographic study due to the present-day connection of this continent with Asia in Northern Hemisphere,whereas during past( Jurassic and pre-Jurassic) it was connected to the Gondwana. The Mesozoic vertebrates show close affinities with Gondwanan *** Cenozoic vertebrates show Eurasian affinity and migrated from Indo-Pak subcontinent to Eurasia or vice versa via Paleo Indus River systems along Western Indus Suture,after long journey of about 6 000 km the first collision of Indo-Pak subcontinent with Asia occurred at terminal Cretaceous.

A modern pollen dataset used in this study consists of 75 surface samples from ponds,lakes,and reservoirs in Northwest Yunnan,Southwest *** data for each site,including monthly,seasonal and dry/rainy seasonal,as well as mean annual temperature and precipitation,were derived from observational data（1961-2010） of 20 meteorological stations in this region using linear interpolation *** correspondence analysis（CCA） was used to reveal the climatic parameters that best reflect the main patterns of variation in this modern pollen dataset,and to detect anomalous *** of CCA indicate that mean annual precipitation（MAP）,precipitation in dry season（November-April）（Pds）,and January temperature（Tjan） are three climatic parameters controlling the variation of this modern pollen dataset in Northwest ***–climate transfer functions for MAP,Pds and Tjan were developed using the weighted-averaging partial least squares（WA-PLS） regression *** to the performance of WA-PLS regression models,3-component WA-PLS models were selected respectively for these three climatic parameters with low RMSEP（the root mean square error of prediction）,low maximum bias,and high coefficient of determination（r2） between observed and predicted values（RMSEP=48.7,17.9 mm,and 1.0 ℃;Maximum Bias=79.8,37.1 mm,and 1.6 ℃;r2=0.6,0.6,and 0.74 for MAP,Pds and Tjan,respectively）.Transfer functions for MAP,Pds and Tjan were then applied to a fossil pollen record from Lugu Lake in Northwest Yunnan to reconstruct paleoclimate in the catchment of this *** estimates of paleoclimate show that MAP and Pds fluctuated around 1000 and 110 mm（their present values）,but Tjan is 0.8-4.3 ℃ lower than the present（5 ℃） during 15000-12800 a BP（cal.a BP）.From 12800 to 11500 a BP,MAP and Pds were ca.50 and 25 mm higher than the present,and Tjan increased to be the present *** climatic parameters at 11500-9100 a BP reached their maxima throughout the last d

Dalingheornis liweii gen. et sp. nov., a new enantiornithine bird was collected from the early Cretaceous Yixian Formation in northeastern China. It is the first record of a highly specialized heterodactyl foot in Mesozoic birds. The Y-shaped furcula with short hypocleidum is different from that of other enantiornithines. The minor metacarpal is robust and longer than the major metacarpal. A long bony tail composed of 20 caudal vertebrae with chevrons resembling those of dromaeosaurids and thus, highlighting again the evolutionary relationship between birds and non-avian theropods. Well-preserved alula feathers and a heterodactyl foot provide strong evidence for the arboreal habit of Dalingheornis.

Taxonomic revision of lizards from the Paleocene deposits of the Qianshan Basin, Anhui, China

The dated phylogeny and molecular adaptation to high-altitude environments of alpine Parnassius butterflies are not fully understood,due to difficulty in sample collection,limited sequence markers and time calibration ***,we present the large scale transcriptomic dataset of eight representative Parnassius species for the first time to conduct phylogenetic and dating analyses using 476 orthologous genes and multiple analytic *** phylogenetic analyses support that among their main higher lineages,the subgenus Parnassius form a well-resolved basal clade,and the subgenera Tadumia and Kailasius are closely related with each *** molecular dating analyses reveal that their rapid diversifications were occurred at about 17 to 20 million years ago in the early to middle Miocene,compatible with the spatiotemporal distribution pattern of host plants,under the coupled effect of common extrinsic factors,based on the above robust phylogeny and new calibration *** analyses of elevation-based differentially expressed genes(DEGs) between the ecologically differentiated Parnassius species indicate that the multifaceted strategies are likely to use for high altitude adaptation,such as enhanced genetic information processing,antioxidant system,metabolism,signal transduction,and so ***,both the candidate differentially expressed genes and the partial overlaps of positively selected genes(PSGs) suggest the evolutionarily adaptive convergence to the high-altitude environments among Parnassius and other related butterflies.

Although the Late Cretaceous lizard fauna of China and Mongolia is relatively well-known, information on Paleocene lizards from the same region is currently limited. Several species of lizards have been reported from the Paleocene Wanghudun and Doumu formations of Qianshan Basin on the basis of fragmentary specimens, namely Agama sinensis Hou, 1974, Anhuisaurus huainanensis Hou, 1974, Anqingosaurus brevicephalus Hou, 1976, Chang/iangosaurus huananensis Hou, 1976, Qianshanosaurus huangpuensis Hou, 1974, and Tinosaurus doumuensis Hou, 1974. In this paper, we review all the reported material of these taxa with the aid of new technology, including CT scanning, and according to current views of squamate relationships and classification. Revised descriptions and classifications are given for each taxon, leading to changes in our understanding of faunal composition. This, in turn, reveals greater morphological and ecological diversity among the Paleocene lizards of the Qianshan Basin, including the occurrence of a varaniform （IVPP V 22767）, and the reinterpretation of Anqingosaurus as a possible burrower. Further work on the Paleocene Qianshan lizards is ongoing and the discovery of new specimens may help to solve the puzzles these strange lizards have posed.

Relationship between surface pollen assemblages and vegetation in Luonan Basin, Eastern Qinling Mountains, Central China

The catchment of South Luohe River in Central China is an important region for investigating modern pollen-environment relationship, because it is located in the transitional zone between south and north China, an environment which is sensitive to climate changes. In this study, 40 surface samples under ten vegetation types were collected to reveal the relationship between pollen assemblages and vegetation. The results show that the surface pollen assemblages reflect the vegetation quite well. In forest topsoils, the average of arbo- real pollen content is greater than 40%, and the Selaginella sinensis spore is high. As to sparse forest grassland and shrub community, the average arboreal pollen is 13.2% and 16.6% respectively, and the shrub pollen is relatively higher than that of grassland samples. The grassland and farmland are characterized by low percentage of tree and shrub pollen （〈10% and 〈1%）, and high percentage of herbs （〉80%）. Pinus, Quercus and some other arboreal pollen can indicate the regional vegetation because of their dispersal ability. Quercus pollen is under-representative and so is Pinus. Artemisia pollen is significantly over-represented, has poor correlation with the plant coverage, and may reflect human dis- turbance. Gramineae can indicate plant quite well, but with low representation. High content of Chenopodiaceae probably suggests human impact. Predominant Selaginella sinensis can be used as an indicator of forest environment. Cluster analysis and principal components analysis of pollen assemblages can distinguish forest and non-forest vegetation well. The former method is better at separating pine and mixed forests, while the latter is more stable and could better differentiate farmland and other non-forest area. The first axis of PCA mainly reflects the humidity.
