SUSTAINABLE MULTIFAMILY KITCHEN DESIGN:A STUDENT ELICITATION APPROACH

This case study focuses on the sustainable design of a demonstration kitchen space within a multifamily residence through a student lens.A project-based learning opportunity for undergraduate students in a senior-level kitchen and bath design studio was created to redesign a multifamily starter kitchen space into a multifamily sustainable kitchen space within the Center for Real Life Kitchen Design at Virginia *** completion of this student project,a content analysis was employed to uncover sustainability themes within these student *** students are making the environment and sustainability priorities in their shopping choices,uncovering student themes regarding multifamily sustainability kitchen design criteria can uncover trends important to this millennial generation(The Nielsen Company,2015;Timm,2014).Furthermore,as demand for sustainability increases,comparing student themes to multifamily industry sustainability certification systems may unearth potential gaps in the industry which need to be *** there are several sustainability certification agencies that apply to multifamily in general,there is no one specific source for sustainability guidelines for kitchens,much less in multifamily *** lack of guidelines and the inconsistency between existing certification programs make it confusing for consumers,developers,designers,and students to value and weigh elements of a sustainable kitchen project,especially with respect to multifamily *** examining kitchens using current sustainability certification programs as well as this case study,recommendations can be put forth to shape guidelines for sustainable multifamily kitchens that are both clearly understood and sensitive to the ***,this could lead to sustainable kitchen design features becoming more commonplace in the multifamily resident home.

High-order maximum-principle-preserving and positivity-preserving weighted compact nonlinear schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws

In this paper,the maximum-principle-preserving(MPP)and positivitypreserving(PP)flux limiting technique will be generalized to a class of high-order weighted compact nonlinear schemes(WCNSs)for scalar conservation laws and the compressible Euler systems in both one and two *** main idea of the present method is to rewrite the scheme in a conservative form,and then define the local limiting parameters via case-by-case *** test problems are presented to demonstrate that the proposed MPP/PP WCNSs incorporating a third-order Runge-Kutta method can attain the desired order of *** test problems with strong shocks and high pressure and density ratios are also conducted to testify the performance of the schemes.

Modelling the Dropout Patterns of MOOC Learners

Integrating BDS and GPS for precise relative orbit determination of LEO formation flying

Low-Earth-Orbit（LEO） formation-flying satellites have been widely applied in many kinds of space geodesy. Precise Relative Orbit Determination（PROD） is an essential prerequisite for the LEO formation-flying satellites to complete their mission in space. The contribution of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System（BDS） to the accuracy and reliability of PROD of LEO formation-flying satellites based on a Global Positioning System（GPS） is studied using a simulation method. Firstly, when BDS is added to GPS, the mean number of visible satellites increases from9.71 to 21.58. Secondly, the results show that the 3-Dimensional（3 D） accuracy of PROD, based on BDS-only, GPS-only and BDS ＋ GPS, is 0.74 mm, 0.66 mm and 0.52 mm, respectively. When BDS co-works with GPS, the accuracy increases by 29.73%. Geostationary-Earth-Orbit（GEO） satellites and Inclined Geosynchronous-Orbit（IGSO） satellites are only distributed over the Asia-Pacific region; however, they could provide a global improvement to PROD. The difference in PROD results between the Asia-Pacific region and the non-Asia-Pacific region is not apparent. Furthermore, the value of the Ambiguity Dilution Of Precision（ADOP）, based on BDS ＋ GPS, decreases by 7.50% and 8.26%, respectively, compared with BDS-only and GPS-only. Finally, if the relative position between satellites is only a few kilometres, the effect of ephemeris errors on PROD could be ignored. However, for a several-hundred-kilometre separation of the LEO satellites, the SingleDifference（SD） ephemeris errors of GEO satellites would be on the order of centimetres. The experimental results show that when IGSO satellites and Medium-Earth-Orbit（MEO） satellites co-work with GEO satellites, the accuracy decreases by 17.02%.

Based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock(MCDHF)method,similar models are employed to simultaneously calculate the first-order and second-order Zeeman coefficients as well as the hyperfine interaction constants of the related energy levels of ^(27)Al^(+)and its logical ions ^(9)Be^(+)and^(25)Mg^(+)in the^(27)Al^(+)optical *** less than 0.34%deviations from experimental values in Zeeman coefficients of^(27)Al^(+),these calculated parameters will be of great help for better evaluation of the systematic *** also calculate the isotope shift parameters of the related energy levels,which could extend our knowledge and understanding of nuclear properties of these ions.

Forbidden transition properties of fine-structure 2p^3 ~4S_(3/2)–2p^3 ~2D_(3/2,5/2) for nitrogen-like ions

Based on relativistic wave functions from multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and configuration interaction cal- culations, E2 and M1 transition probabilities of 2p3 4S3/2-2p3 2D3/2,5/2 are investigated in the nitrogen-like sequence with 7 〈 Z 〈 16. The contributions of the electron correlations, Breit interaction, and the quantum electrodynamic （QED） effects on the transition properties are analyzed. The present results can be used for diagnosing plasma. In addition, several N-like ions can also be recommended as a promising candidate for a highly charged ion （HCI） clock with a quality factor （Q） of trnnsition as hitch as 1020.

Quantum algorithms of state estimators in classical control systems

In this paper, quantum algorithms are applied to the design of state estimators in classical control systems under the condition that quantum algorithms can be physically implemented. We demonstrate that the design of state estimators can be solved by quantum algorithms, which may achieve significant acceleration in comparison to traditional classical algorithms. The time complexity can be reduced from O(n6) to O(qn)when the system matrix is sparse and the condition number κ and the reciprocal of precision ? are small in size O(poly log(n)), where n is the dimension of state x(t) and q is the dimension of input u(t). Our research will provide an entire quantum scheme of constructing state estimators and can be regarded as an attempt to widen application scope of quantum computation.

Decoherence Effects of Terahertz Generation in Solids under Two-Color Femtosecond Laser Fields

We theoretically investigate terahertz emission from solid materials pumped by intense two-color femtosecond laser field in the presence of decoherence ***-mechanical simulations are based on the length gauge semiconductor Bloch equations describing the optical excitation and decoherence with phenomenological dephasing and depopulation *** of interband and intraband mechanisms are identified in time domain,and the latter has dominated THz generation in solid-state *** is found that dephasing is crucial for enhancing asymmetric intraband current and deduced that solid-state materials with short dephasing time and long depopulation time would be optimal selection for strong-field terahertz generation experiments.

Simple black holes with anisotropic fluid

We study a spherically symmetric spacetime made of an anisotropic fluid whose radial equation-of-state is given by p_1=-ρ. This case allows analytic solutions and is a good example for studying the static configuration of a black hole plus matter. For a given equation-of-state parameter w_2 = p_2/ρ for angular directions, we find the exact solutions of the Einstein equation described by two parameters. We classify the solutions into six types based on the behavior of the metric function. Depending on the parameters, the solutions can have event and cosmological horizons. One of the solution types corresponds to a generalization of the Reissner-Nordstr(o|¨)m black hole, the thermodynamic properties for which are obtained in a simple form. The solutions are stable under radial perturbations.
