Satellite remote sensing reveals overwhelming recovery of forest from disturbances in Asia

Forest ecosystems play key roles in mitigating human-induced climate change through enhanced carbon uptake;however,frequently occurring climate extremes and human activities have considerably threatened the stability of *** the same time,detailed accounts of disturbances and forest responses are not yet well quantified in *** study employed the Breaks For Additive Seasonal and Trend method-an abrupt-change detection method-to analyze the Enhanced Vegetation Index time series in East Asia,South Asia,and Southeast *** approach allowed us to detect forest disturbance and quantify the resilience after *** showed that 20%of forests experienced disturbance with an increasing trend from 2000 to 2022,and Southeast Asian countries were more severely affected by ***,95%of forests had robust resilience and could recover from disturbance within a few *** resilience of forests suffering from greater magnitude of disturbance tended to be stronger than forests with lower disturbance *** summary,this study investigated the resilience of forests across the low and middle latitudes of Asia over the past two *** authors found that most forests exhibited good resilience after disturbance and about two-thirds had recovered to a better state in *** findings of this study underscore the complex relationship between disturbance and resilience,contributing to comprehension of forest resilience through satellite remote sensing.

QTL mapping of economically important traits in Silkworm (Bombyx mori)

A backcrossed population (BC1) was derived from a cross between C100 and Dazao. AFLP technique was employed for mapping the QTLs. The QTLs for the whole cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, ratio of cocoon shell, weight of pupae etc. were analyzed and 11 QTLs were detected based on the constructed linkage map. Two QTLs for whole cocoon weight were local-ized on linkage group 6 and 19; three QTLs for cocoon shell weight were localized on linkage group 3, 14 and 19; three QTLs for ratio of cocoon shell were localized on the linkage group 2, 11 and 15, and three QTLs for the weight of pupae were localized on linkage 2, 14 and 19. All these have laid an important base for the marker assisted breeding of the silkworm.

BmPLA2 containing conserved domain WD40 affects the metabolic functions of fat body tissue in silkworm, Bombyx moil

PLA2 enzyme hydrolyzes arachidonic acid, and other polyunsaturated fatty acids, from the sn-2 position to release free arachidonic acid and a lysophospholipid. Previous studies reported that the PLA2 in invertebrate organisms participates in lipid signaling molecules like arachidonic acid release in immune-associated tissues like hemo- cytes and fat bodies. In the present study, we cloned the BmPLA2 gene from fat body tissue of silkworm Bombyx mori, which has a total sequence of 1.031 kb with a 31.90 kDa pro- tein. In silico results of BmPLA2 indicated that the protein has a putative WD40 conserved domain and its phylogeny tree clustered with Danaus plexippus species. We investigated the transcriptional expression in development stages and tissues. The highest expression of BmPLA2 was screened in fat body among the studied tissues of third day fifth instar larva, with a high expression on third day fifth instar larva followed by a depression of expression in the wandering stage of the fifth instar larva. The expression of BmPLA2 in female pupa was higher than that of male pupa. Our RNAi-mediated gene silencing results showed highest reduction of BmPLA2 expression in post-24 h followed by post-48 and post-72 h. The BmPLA2-RNAi larvae and pupa could be characterized by pharate adult lethality and underdevelopment. The phenotypic characters of fat body cells in RNAi-induced larva im- plied that BmPLA2 affects the metabolic functions of fat body tissue in silkworm Bombyx mori.

Analysis of the structure and expression of the 30K protein genes in silkworm, Bombyx mori

A group of lipoproteins with molecular sizes of approximately 30 kDa, referred to as 30K proteins, axe synthesized in fat body cells in the fifth instar larvae of silkworm, Bombyx mori. Analyzing the silkworm genome and its expressed sequence tags （ESTs）, we found 10 genes encoding 30K proteins, which are mainly distributed in three subfamilies. Of these, seven coding proteins were found to harbor the degrading sites of 30kP protease A, although the number of degrading sites may be different. As some potential core promoters and regulatory elements were supposed to be essential for gene transcription, the expression profiles of these genes were examined by semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Eight 30K protein genes were detected to express luxuriantly in the fat body, while two were hardly expressed. Such results suggest that these 30K proteins may have different functions, and their adjacent regulatory elements play a crucial role in regulating their transcription.

Multiple Interval Mapping for Whole Cocoon Weight and Related Economically Important Traits QTL in Silkworm(Bombyx mori)

A backcrossed population （BC1） derived from a cross between C100 and Dazao was obtained. The quantitative trait loci （QTLs） of the economically important traits for whole cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, ratio of cocoon shell and weight of pupae, etc., were analyzed for the first time using the multiple interval mapping software WinQTLCart2.0. In total 40 QTLs were detected and contributed to 21 groups based on the constructed linkage map. According to the mapping results, 2, 2, 3, and 2 major QTLs explained over 20% of total phenotypic variations, whereas four QTLs, namely qCW-19, qSW-2, qCSR-4, and qPW-23, explained more than 30% of total phenotypic variations for whole cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, ratio of cocoon shell and weight of pupae, respectively. Correlated traits QTLs often share the same location. Furthermore, most of the detected QTLs were closed to one-side marker. By using the very closed markers, positive QTLs can be aggregated, which can form a basis for molecular marker-assisted selection and breeding.

Evaluation of Some Stem Taper Models for Camellia japonica in Mount Halla, Korea

This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the four stem taper models on Camellia japonica in Jeju Island, Korea using fit statistics and lack-of-fit statistics. The five statistical criteria that were used in this study were standard error of estimate(SEE), mean bias( E), absolute mean difference(AMD), coefficient of determination(R2), and root mean square error(RMSE). Results showed that the Kozak model 02 stem taper had the best performance in all fit statistics(SEE: 3.4708, E : 0.0040 cm, AMD : 0.9060 cm, R2 : 0.9870, and RMSE : 1.2545). On the other hand, Max and Burkhart stem taper model had the poorest performance in each statistical criterion(SEE: 4.2121, E : 0.2520 cm, AMD : 1.1300 cm, R2 : 0.9805, and RMSE: 1.5317). For the lack-of-fit statistics, the Kozak model 02 also provided the best performance having the best AMD in most of the relative height classes for diameter outside bark prediction and in most of the DBH classes for total volume prediction while Max and Burkhart had the poorest performance. These stem taper equations could help forest managers to better estimate the diameter outside bark at any given height, merchantable stem volumes and total stem volumes of the standing trees of Camellia japonica in the forests of Jeju Island, Korea.

Vegetation and ecosystem carbon recovery following shifting cultivation in MizoramManipur-Kachin rainforest eco-region,Southern Asia

Background:Shifting cultivation(locally known as“jhum”)is a major driver of deforestation and loss of ecosystem services in *** developing any effective conservation of biodiversity and carbon service program,an indepth understanding to the recovery of vegetation and carbon after abandonment of jhum is *** estimated species richness,abundance and composition of trees,shrubs and herbs,carbon distribution in aboveground and belowground components along a chronosequence of jhum fallow in northeast India,and elucidated the factors affecting the recovery processes of jhum ***:Species composition and other plant community attributes,carbon storage in different pools were studied in 5 jhum fallows(<5,5-10,11-15,16-20,21-25 years old)and an old-growth *** data were subjected to linear mixed effect modeling using R-package“nlme”for identifying the important factors contributing to the recovery of vegetation and ***:Species composition varied significantly(P<0.05)between jhum fallows and old-growth *** density varied from 28 stems ha−1 in 5 years old jhum fallow to 163 stems ha−1 in old-growth *** biomass carbon in all components and soil organic carbon were significantly(P=0.01)lower in jhum fallows than in the old-growth forest except living non-woody biomass *** recovery of aboveground biomass carbon was faster during early successive years than the mid-successive jhum *** ecosystem carbon and soil organic carbon stock in the oldest jhum fallow was 33%and 62%of those in the old-growth forest,*** fallow age was found to be the most important explanatory factor in the recovery process of vegetation and carbon stock in re-growing ***:The shifting cultivation fallows gradually recovered both vegetation and carbon and are potential repository sites for biodiversity conservation,which may take much longer time to reach up to old-growth forest in northeast India.

We have identified Bombyx mori transformer-2 gene(Bmtra-2)cDNA by blasting the ESTdatabase of *** was expressed in the whole life of the male and female silkworm and was observed asa band of 1.3 kb by Northern blot *** comparing corresponding ESTs to the Bmtra-2 DNA sequence,it was revealed that there were eight exons and seven introns,and all splice sites of exons/introns conformedto the GT/AG ***-2 pre-mRNA can produce multiple mRNAs encoding six distinct isoforms ofBmTRA-2 protein using an alternative splicing pathway during *** types of Bmtra-2 cDNAclones were identified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain *** isoforms of BmTRA-2 proteincontain two arginine/serine-rich domains and one RNA recognition motif,showing striking organizationalsimilarity to Drosophila TRA-2 proteins.

Spatiotemporal characteristics of the sea level anomaly in the Kuroshio Extension using a self-organizing map

Satellite altimeter SSH data in the Kuroshio Extension （KE） region gathered during the period January 1993 to December 2014 are analyzed using self-organizing map （SOM） analysis. Four spatial patterns （SOM1, SOM2, SOM3, and SOM4） are extracted, and the corresponding time series are used to characterize the variation of the sea level anomaly. Except in some individual months, SOM1 and SOM2 with single-branch jet structures appear alternately during the periods 1993-1998 and 2002-2011. However, during 1999-2001 and 2012-2014, SOM3 and SOM4 with double-branch jet structures are *** sea level anomalies exhibit interannual variations, while the KE stream demonstrates decadal variation. For SOM1, the change in the KE path is less evident, although the KE jet is strong and narrow. For SOM2, the KE jet is weakened and widened and its jet axis moves towards the southwest. Compared with the SOM3, for SOM4 the trough and ridge in the upstream KE region are deeper in the northeast-southwest direction, and accompanied by a jet weakening and *** study shows that SOM analysis is a useful approach for characterizing KE variability.
