Background Global climate change has resulted in precipitation regimes exhibiting an increasing trend in rainfall intensity but a reduction in its frequency. Nitrogen(N) deposition is a crucial component of the global N cycling. Nematode body size is a trait that responds to climate change and is used as a standard trait-based indicator in soil community analysis. Variations in body size influence metabolic carbon(C). We examined the ways by which body size and metabolic C of nematodes respond to changing precipitation regimes and how N deposition regulates these responses by an 8-year manipulative *** Nematode body size was indicated by the community-weighted mean(CWM) mass. We quantified C metabolism components of soil nematodes including production C, respiration C, and corresponding C use efficiency(CUE) under different precipitation intensities and N addition in a semi-arid steppe on the Mongolian Plateau. The Mantel test was used to determine the correlations between CWM, CUE and environmental factors. The partial least squares path modeling(PLS-PM) was conducted to quantify direct or indirect contributions among latent *** We found that heavy precipitation intensity increased the CWM mass of total nematodes and omnivorespredators without N addition. N addition decreased CWM mass of bacterivores across all the precipitation intensity treatments. Stronger precipitation intensities might be favorable for nematode production and respiration C. Sulfated polysaccharides extracted from seaweeds, including Carrageenan, Fucoidan and Ulvan, are crucial bioactive compounds known for their diverse beneficial properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor, immunomodulatory, antiviral, and anticoagulant effects. These polysaccharides form hydrogels hold immense promise in biomedicine, particularly in tissue engineering, drug delivery systems and wound healing. This review comprehensively explores the sources and structural characteristics of the three important sulfated polysaccharides extracted from different algae species. It elucidates the gelation mechanisms of these polysaccharides into hydrogels. Furthermore, the biomedical applications of these three sulfated polysaccharide hydrogels in wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering are discussed, highlighting their potential in the biomedicine.

As ectotherms, fish are highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can profoundly impact their reproductive cycles. In this study, we investigated the fertility and histological characteristics of zebrafish(Danio rerio) ovaries exposed to a temperature gradient ranging from the thermopreferendum temperature of the species,27℃, to lower temperatures of 22℃, 20℃, and 13℃ over a period of two weeks. Comparative metabolomic(six biological replicates for each temperature) and transcriptomic(four biological replicates for each temperature) analyses were conducted under the four temperature conditions. Results indicated that lower temperatures inhibited oocyte development and differential metabolites were involved in steroid hormone production,antioxidant function, and lipid and protein *** reproductive hormones, increased proteolysis,and lipid degradation significantly impeded oocyte development and egg maturation. Notably, a significant increase in bile acid content was noted in the ovaries of the cold-treated fish, indicating that bile acids play a critical role in ovarian failure. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms governing the reproductive response of fish to cold stress.

Bivalve aquaculture plays a crucial role in the aquaculture industry due to the economic value of many bivalve species. Understanding the underlying genetic basis of bivalve growth regulation is essential for enhancing germplasm innovation and ensuring sustainable development of the industry. Though numerous candidate genes have been identified, their functional validation remains challenging. Fortunately, the dwarf surf clam(Mulinia lateralis) serves as a promising model organism for investigating genetic mechanisms underlying growth regulation in bivalves. The GWAS study in the Yesso scallop(Patinopecten yessoensis) has pinpointed the E2F3 gene as a key regulator of growth-related traits. However, the specific role of E2F3 in bivalve growth remains unclear. This study aimed to further confirm the regulatory function of the E2F3 gene in the dwarf surf clam through RNA interference experiments. Our results revealed several genes are associated with individual growth and development, including CTS7, HSP70B2, and PGLYRP3, as well as genes involved in lipid metabolism such as FABP2 and FASN. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that E2F3 primarily modulates critical processes like amino acid and lipid metabolism. These findings suggest that E2F3 likely regulates growth in the dwarf surf clam by influencing amino acid and lipid metabolism. Overall, this study advances our understanding on the function of E2F3 gene in growth regulation in bivalves, providing valuable insights for future research in this field.

Facet effects on bimetallic ZnSn hydroxide microcrystals for selective electrochemical CO2 reduction

Employing crystal facets to regulate the catalytic properties in electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction（eCO2RR） has been well demonstrated on electrocatalysts containing single metals but rarely explored for bimetallic systems. Here, we synthesize Zn Sn（OH）6（ZSO）microcrystals（MCs） with distinct facets and investigate the facet effects in eCO2RR. Electrochemical studies and in situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy（in situ-FTIR） reveal that ZSO MCs produce mainly C1 products of HCOOH and CO. The {111} facet of the ZSO MCS exhibits higher selectivity and faradaic efficiency（FE） than that of the {100} facet over a wide range of potentials（-0.9 V ～-1.3 V versus RHE）. Density Functional Theory（DFT） calculations elucidate that the {111} facet is favorable to the adsorption/activation of CO2molecules,the formation of intermediate in the rate-determining step, and the desorption of C1 products of CO and HCOOH molecules.
