Paclitaxel-associated reticulate hyperpigmentation:Report and review of chemotherapy-induced reticulate hyperpigmentation

Drug-induced reticulate hyperpigmentation is uncommon. Including the patient described in this report, chemotherapy-associated reticulate hyperpigmentation has only been described in ten individuals. This paper describes the features of a woman with recurrent and metastatic breast cancer who developed paclitaxelinduced reticulate hyperpigmentation and reviews the characteristics of other oncology patients who developed reticulate hyperpigmentation from their antineoplastic treatment. A 55-year-old Taiwan Residents woman who developed reticulate hyperpigmentation on her abdomen, back and extremities after receiving her initial treatment for metastatic breast cancer with paclitaxel is described. The hyperpigmentation became darker with each subsequent administration of paclitaxel. The drug was discontinued after five courses and the pigment faded within two months. Pub Med was searched with the key words: Breast, cancer, chemotherapy, hyperpigmentation, neoplasm, reticulate, tumor, paclitaxel, taxol. The papers generated by the search, and their references, were reviewed. Chemotherapy-induced reticulate hyperpigmentation has been described in four men and six women. Bleomycin, cytoxan, 5-fluorouracil, idarubacin, and paclitaxel caused the hyperpigmentation. The hyperpigmentation faded in 83% of the patients between two to six months after the associated antineoplastic agent was discontinued. In conclusion, chemotherapy-induced reticulate hyperpigmentation is a rare reaction that may occur during treatment with various antineoplastic agents. The hyperpigmentation fades in most individuals once thetreatment is discontinued. Therefore, cancer treatment with the associated drug can be continued in patients who experience this cutaneous adverse event.

clinical Application of the UK Working Party＇s Criteria for the Diagnosis of Atopic Dermatitis in the Chinese Population by Age Group

Background： Atopic dermatitis （AD） is a common inflammatory skin disease with an increasingly significant prevalence. The prevalence of AD depends greatly on how its diagnosis is done. The UK Working Party＇s diagnostic criteria for AD are simple and easy to apply without invasive laboratory tests. This study assessed the clinical utility of these criteria in China. Methods： Data were collected from 6208 patients at 31 tertiary hospitals in 13 Chinese provinces/municipalities from March 2014 to May 2014.. The agreement between the UK diagnostic criteria and the clinical records for AD was assessed by Cohen＇s kappa. Results： The overall agreement between the UK diagnostic criteria and clinical diagnosis was fair （kappa = 0.40）. A slightly better agreement was found in patients aged between 4 and 9 years （kappa = 0.48）, while fair agreement was found in the group 〈4 years and the group ≥10 years （kappa = 0.27 and 0.39, respectively）. Using the UK party＇s criteria as the standard, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the clinical diagnosis of AD were 62.3%, 89.2%, 38.0%, and 95.7%, respectively. Conclusions： Our study indicates a modest ability among Chinese dermatologists to apply the UK Working Party＇s diagnostic criteria for AD, especially in patients aged 〈4 years and ≥10 years. Since there is no gold standard for AD diagnosis, it is important to determine how AD is identified when evaluating a diagnostic tool.

Effects of secukinumab and adalimumab on serum uric acid level in patients with plaque psoriasis

Background:Psoriasis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease,and hyperuricemia is a common comorbidity in patients with ***,there are limited reports on the relationship between serum uric acid levels and biological treatment *** purposes of this study were to compare the differences in serum uric acid levels between patients with psoriasis and healthy controls and analyze the risk of ***:A total of 196 patients with psoriasis and 191 age-and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this retrospective cohort *** hundred and twenty-seven patients with severe psoriasis were treated with ***-eight patients received adalimumab,and 59 patients received *** uric acid levels were measured at baseline,week 24,and week 48 of ***:Patients with psoriasis had higher serum uric acid levels than healthy controls(6.4±1.7 mg/dL vs.5.7±1.5 mg/dL,P0.05).No significant changes in serum uric acid levels and hyperuricemia were observed following adalimumab treatment(P>0.05).The serum uric acid level in patients treated with secukinumab was 6.7±1.6 mg/dL at week 24,which was not statistically different from that at baseline(6.6±1.4 mg/dL,P=0.885).Serum uric acid levels were significantly decreased at week 48(6.3±1.5 mg/dL vs.6.6±1.4 mg/dL,P=0.007)in patients treated with *** had no significant effect on hyperuricemia either(P>0.05).Conclusions:The serum uric acid levels and prevalence of hyperuricemia in patients with psoriasis were significantly higher than those in healthy *** treatment for 48 weeks successfully decreased serum uric acid levels in patients with psoriasis,whereas adalimumab had no significant effe

Thyroid hormones play essential roles in spermatogenesis,but their effects on infertile males remain poorly *** study aimed to evaluate the impact of combining carbimazole(CBZ)with vitamin E(VE)on testicular injury induced by experimental hyperthyroidism in adult albino rats,focusing on oxidative,inflammatory,and apoptotic *** this experimental study,64 adult male albino Wistar rats were divided into eight groups:Group I(control-untreated),Group II(CBZ-control),Group III(VE-control),Group IV(CBZ+VE-control),Group V(levothyroxine-induced testicular injury),Group VI(levothyroxine+CBZ-treated),Group VII(levothyroxine+VE-treated),and Group VIII(levothyroxine+CBZ+VE-treated).The study was conducted in the Faculty of Medicine,Suez Canal University(Ismailia,Egypt).After cervical decapitation,both testes and epididymis were examined histopathologically and *** differences were observed among groups concerning malondialdehyde(MDA),glutathione(GSH),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and catalase(CAT;all P<0.001).Polymerase chain reaction analysis showed significant differences in tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interleukin-10(IL-10),Bcl-2-associated X protein(BAX),B-cell lymphoma 2 protein(Bcl2),p53,Caspase-3,Caspase-8,Caspase-9,and nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)mRNA levels(all P<0.001).Hyperthyroid group treated with CBZ alone(Group VI)exhibited testicular side effects,affecting seminiferous tubules and ***,the Group VIII showed improved spermatogenesis and a decrease in testicular side *** addition of VE to the treatment of hyperthyroid rats with CBZ reduced testicular side effects and seminiferous tubular affection when potentially improving *** research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms fully.

Precancerous lesions of oral mucosa, known as potentially malignant disorders in recent years, are consists of a group of diseases, which should be diagnosed in the early stage. Oral leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis, and oral erythroplakia are the most common oral mucosal diseases that have a very high malignant transformation rate. Oral lichen planus is one of the potentially malignant disorders that may be seen in six different subtypes including papular, reticular, plaquelike, atrophic, erosive, and bullous type, clinically. Atrophic and erosive subtypes have the greater increased malignant transformation risk compared to another subtypes. Although there are various etiological studies, the etiology of almost all these diseases is not fully understood. Geographically, etiologic factors may *** most frequently reported possible factors are tobacco use, alcohol drinking, chewing of betel quid containing areca nut, and solar rays. Early diagnosis is very important and can be lifesaving, because in late stages, they may be progressed to severe dysplasia and even carcinoma in situ and/or squamous cell carcinoma. For most diseases, treatment results are not satisfactory in spite of miscellaneous therapies. While at the forefront of surgical intervention, topical and systemic treatment alternatives such as corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, and retinoids are widely used.
