AIM： To characterize hyperlactatemia in patients with non-acetaminophen acute liver failure （ALF） in an attempt to clarify the mechanisms implicated and the role as a prognosis factor. METHoDS： In the setting of liver transplantation, 63 consecutive patients with non-acetaminophen acute liver failure were studied in relation to tissue oxygenation, hemodynamic and metabolic parameters. Before and after transplantation, the number of infected patients and outcome were registered. RESULTS： Acute ALF showed higher levels of lactate than subacute ALF （5.4 ± 1 mmol/L versus 2.2 ± 0.6 mmol/L, P= 0.01）. oxygenation parameters were within the normal range. Lactate levels showed good correlation with respiratory quotient （r=0.759, P〈 0.005）, mean glucose administration （r= 0.664, P= 0.01） and encephalopathy （r= 0.698, P= 0.02）, but not with splanchnic arteriovenous difference in PCo2, pH and the presence of infection （P=0.1）. Portal vein lactate was higher （P〈0.05） than arterial and mixed venous lactate, suggesting its production of hyperlactatemia in the intestine and spleen. The presence of infection was an independent predictor of survival. CoNCLUSIoN： Hyperlactatemia is not a prognosis factor due to byproduct of the overall acceleration in glycolysis.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of amantadine plus interferonalpha and ribavirin in non-responder patients with chronic hepatitis ***: Twenty-six non-responder patients received the regimen of IFN-α-2a at a dose of 6 million units three times a week, 1 000-1 200 mg of ribavirin daily, and 200 mg of amantadine daily in divided doses over 48 wk. After the end of treatment, at the 72nd wk, a sustained viral response rate was ***: An early (after 12 wk of therapy) response was seen in 34.6% (9/26) of patients. Response rate at the 24th wk was 42.3% (11/26). End of treatment response (ETR) was 53.8% (14/26). Sustained viral response (SVR) was 42.3% (11/26). There was a statistically significant difference between 0 and 12 wk (P = 0.04), 0 and 24 wk (P = 0.01), 0 and 48 wk (P = 0.00), and 0 and 72 wk (P = 0.001). No patient had severe adverse effects during the ***: Combination regimen of interferon-α,ribavirin and amantadine can enhance sustained viral response on IFN-α and ribavirin non-responder patients with HCV. Triple therapy with amantadine should be evaluated in further studies.

AIM: To compare the outcomes of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) performed with a femtosecond laser (Femtec, Technolas Perfect Vision GmbH, Germany) versus a mechanical microkeratome (Hansatome, Bausch and Lomb, USA) for the correction of myopia and astigmatism. ·METHoDS: In this retrospective study, patients who had undergone LASIK using the 80 -kHz Femtec femtosecond laser were compared to age- and refraction- matched patients in whom the Hansatome microkeratome was used. Refractive and visual results 1 month and 3 months postoperatively, and complication rates were compared between the two groups. ·RESULTS: A total of 280 eyes were analyzed (140 in each group). At 3 months postoperatively in the Femtec vs Hansatome group, spherical equivalent refraction was within ±1.00D of emmetropia in 140 vs 138 eyes (P = 0.498), the cylinder was within ±0.50D in 137 vs 139 eyes (P =0.622), and the UDVA was 20/20 or better in 136 vs 137 eyes (P =0.724), respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the complication rates between the two groups (P =0.099). ·CoNCLUSIoN: LASIK performed both with Femtec femtosecond laser and Hansatome microkeratome achieved satisfactory refractive and visual results at 3 months postoperatively, without significant differences in efficacy, safety, and complication rates between the two procedures.

With advances in biomedical methods, tissue-engineered materials have developed rapidly as an alternative to nerve autografts for the repair of peripheral nerve injuries. However, the materials selected for use in the repair of peripheral nerve injuries, in particular multiple injuries and largegap defects, must be chosen carefully. Various methods and materials for protecting the healthy tissue and repairing peripheral nerve injuries have been described, and each method or material has advantages and disadvantages. Recently, a large amount of research has been focused on tissue-engineered materials for the repair of peripheral nerve injuries. Using the keywords ＂peripheral nerve injury＂, ＂autotransplant＂, ＂nerve graft＂, and ＂biomaterial＂, we retrieved publications using tissue-engineered materials for the repair of peripheral nerve injuries appearing in the Web of Science from 2010 to 2014. The country with the most total publications was the USA. The institutions that were the most productive in this field include Hannover Medical School （Germany）, Washington University （USA）, and Nantong University （China）. The total number of publications using tissue-engineered materials for the repair of peripheral nerve injuries grad- ually increased over time, as did the number of Chinese publications, suggesting that China has made many scientific contributions to this field of research.

AIM:To investigate the efficacy and safety of capecitabine plus irinotecan±bevacizumab in advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer patients. METHoDS:Forty six patients with previously untreated,locally-advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer(mCRC) were recruited between 2001-2006 in a prospective open-label phaseⅡtrial,in German community-based outpatient *** received a standard capecitabine plus irinotecan(CAPIRI) or CAPIRI plus bevacizumab(CAPIRI-BEV) regimen every 3 wk. Dose reductions were mandatory from the first cycle in cases of>grade 2 *** treatment choice of bevacizumab was at the discretion of the *** endpoints were response and toxicity and secondary endpoints included progression-free survival and overall survival. RESULTS:In the CAPIRI group vs the CAPRI-Bev group there were more female than male patients(47% vs 24%) ,and more patients had colon as the primary tumor site(58.8%vs 48.2%) with fewer patients having sigmoid colon as primary tumor site(5.9%vs 20.7%) .Grade 3/4 toxicity was higher with CAPIRI than CAPIRI-Bev:82%vs 58.6%.Partial response rates were 29.4%and 34.5%,and tumor control rates were 70.6%and 75.9%,*** complete responses were *** median progression-free survival was 11.4 mo and 12.8 mo for CAPIRI and CAPIRI-Bev,*** median overall survival for CAPIRI was 15 mo(458 d) and for CAPIRI-Bev 24 mo(733 d) .These differences were not statistically *** the CAPIRI-Bev,group,two patients underwent a full secondary tumor resection after treatment,whereas in the CAPIRI group no cases underwent this procedure.
