*** Waclaw Szuniewicz,a forgotten pioneer in refractive surgery and his work in China

Father Waclaw Szuniewicz(1891-1963) was a skilled ophthalmic surgeon, missionary, and teacher. For several years he worked in China, afterwards in the United States and in Brazil. The aim of the paper is to present the unanalyzed issues of Szuniewicz’s research regarding corneal refractive surgery. Szuniewicz performed experiments on changing the corneal curvature with anterior, posterior and full-thickness incisions. The results of modifying the anterior and posterior corneal curvature were satisfactory, however, diminished significantly within months after surgery. Corneal band resections were superior in terms of efficacy, however, such an intervention commonly led to complications in animal studies. Szuniewicz’s work was not published during his life. Nevertheless, as a result of strong impact of his personality and ideas, he is frequently considered as a pioneer of corneal refractive surgery.

Photorefractive keratectomy after cataract surgery in uncommon cases: long-term results

AIM： To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the excimer laser correction of the residual refractive errors after cataract extraction with intraocular lens（IOL） implantation in uncommon ***： Totally 24 patients with high residual refractive error after cataract surgery with IOL implantation were examined. Twenty-two patients had a history of phacoemulsification and IOL implantation, and two had extra-capsular cataract extraction with IOL implantation. Detailed examination of preoperative medical records was done to explain the origin of the post-cataract refractive errors. All patients underwent photorefractire keratectomy（PRK） enhancement. The mean outcome measures were refraction, uncorretted visual acuity（UCVA）, best corrected visual acuity（BCVA） and corneal transparency and follow up ranged from 1 to 8 ***： The principal causes of residual ametropia was inexact IOL calculation in abnormal eyes with high myopia and congenital lens abnormalities, followed by corneal astigmatism both suture induced and preexisting. After cataract surgery and before the laser enhancement the mean spherical equivalent（SE） was-0.56±3 D ranging from-4.62 to ＋2.25 D in high myopic patients, instead it was-1±1.73 D ranging from-3.25 to ＋3.75 D in the astigmatic eyes, with a mean cylinder of-3.75±0 ranging from-3 to ＋5.50 D. After laser refractive surgery the mean SE was 0.1±0.73, ranging from-0.50 to ＋1.50 in the myopic group, and it was-0.50±0.57 ranging from-1.25 to ＋0.50 in astigmatic patients, with a mean cylinder of-0.25±0.75. In myopic patients the mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.038±0.072 logMAR and 0.018±0.04 respectively, both ranging from 0.10 to 0.0. In astigmatic patients, the mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.213±0.132 and 0.00±0.0 respectively, UCVA ranging from 0.50 to 0.22 and BCVA was 0.00. All patients presented normal corneal transparency. Secondary positioning of rotationally asymmetric refractive multifocal intraocular lens in a patient with glaucoma:A case report

BACKGROUND Asymmetric multifocal intraocular lenses(IOLs)are now widely used in the modern cataract surgery,providing a good level of visual performance over a range of distances and high postoperative patient *** report a case of improved visual quality after shifting the near segment of an asymmetrical multifocal IOL to the superotemporal placement in the dominant eye of a glaucoma *** SUMMARY A 72-year-old woman with bilateral glaucoma underwent phacoemulsification in the dominant eye(left eye)with implantation of an asymmetrical multifocal *** uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA)was 0.0 logMAR(20/20 Snellen)and uncorrected near visual acuity(UNVA)was 0.1 logMAR(20/25 Snellen).Two weeks later,the patient presented to our clinic with decreased vision due to migration of lens epithelial cells to IOL anterior surface and edema of corneal endothelial *** capsule polishing and superotemporal placement of near segment[+3.00 diopter(D)addition(add)]of IOL were *** a result,UDVA at the first week and first year after reposition was 0.0 logMAR(20/20 Snellen),and compared with 0.3 logMAR(20/40 Snellen)in the first week,the UNVA was improved to 0.0 logMAR(20/20 Snellen)one year after *** The postoperative inflammatory reaction and lens epithelial cells proliferation were obvious in this glaucoma *** polishing and rotation of the lens were beneficial to the patient,which not only enhanced the patient's vision,but also improved the patient's ***,glaucoma patients need to be cautious of implanting multifocal *** of a near segment of an asymmetrical multifocal IOL in the dominant eye should be performed on an individual basis.

Introduction: Leukocoria, a whitish pupillary reflection, is a common warning sign of various pediatric ocular pathologies, including Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHVP). This case report describes the observation of a 3-year-old child with melanoderma, presenting with a white spot in the left eye since birth. Observation: Uncorrected distance visual acuity was 2/10 in the right eye and hand movements were perceived at 2 meters in the left eye. Examination of the anterior segment in the left eye revealed leukocoria and microphthalmia. The fundus examination was normal in the right eye but revealed a white mass extending from the center of the optic disc towards the temporal region in the left eye. Ocular imaging, including ocular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography, confirmed the diagnosis of PHVP, illustrated by a residual white mass at the center of the optic disc in the left eye. Conclusion: PHVP should be considered in the presence of leukocoria in a child, with urgent exclusion of retinoblastoma. This observation underscores the importance of early diagnosis for appropriate management. .

The effectiveness of using acupuncture for dry eye disease(DED)is ***,this systematic review investigated the effectiveness and feasibility of using acupuncture for DED in accordance with the 2020 PRISMA *** outcomes of interests were(1)to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in improving the ocular surface disease index(OSDI),Schirmer I test score,and tear breakup time from baseline to the last follow-up;(2)to determine possible complications of using acupuncture;and(3)to investigate the superiority of acupuncture over other commonly used treatments for *** from 394 patients were *** showed that acupuncture significantly prolonged the tear breakup time(P<0.0001),significantly increased the Schirmer I test score(P<0.0001),and significantly reduced the OSDI(P<0.0001)from baseline to the last *** with the control group,the acupuncture group had significantly greater Schirmer I test score(P<0.0001),significantly longer tear breakup time(P=0.0004),and significantly lower OSDI(P=0.002).These results suggest that acupuncture is effective and feasible in improving symptoms and signs of *** severe adverse effects of acupuncture were observed.
