Leaching kinetics of fluorine during the aluminum removal from spent Li-ion battery cathode materials

The high content of aluminum(Al)impurity in the recycled cathode powder seriously affects the extraction efficiency of Nickel,Cobalt,Manganese,and Lithium resources and the actual commercial value of recycled materials,so Al removal is crucially important to conform to the industrial standard of spent Li-ion battery cathode materials.In this work,we systematically investigated the leaching process and optimum conditions associated with Al removal from the cathode powder materials collected in a wet cathode-powder peeling and recycling production line of spent Li-ion batteries(LIBs).Moreover,we specifically studied the leaching of fluorine(F)synergistically happened along with the removal process of Al,which was not concerned about in other studies,but one of the key factors affecting pollution prevention in the recovery process.The mechanism of the whole process including the leaching of Al and F from the cathode powder was indicated by using NMR,FTIR,and XPS,and a defluoridation process was preliminarily investigated in this study.The leaching kinetics of Al could be successfully described by the shrinking core model,controlled by the diffusion process and the activation energy was 11.14 kJ/mol.While,the leaching of F was attributed to the dissolution of LiPF6and decomposition of PVDF,and the kinetics associated was described by Avrami model.The interaction of Al and F is advantageous to realize the defluoridation to some degree.It is expected that our investigation will provide theoretical support for the large-scale recycling of spent LIBs.

Characteristics and sources of peroxyacetyl nitrate(PAN)in the rural North china Plain:Results from1-year continuous observations

Peroxyacetyl nitrate(PAN)is an important photochemical pollutant in the troposphere,whereas long-term measurements are scarce in rural areas in North china Plain(NCP),resulting in unclear seasonal variations and sources of PAN in rural NCP.In this study,we conducted a 1-year observation of PAN during 2021-2022 at the rural NCP site.The average concentrations of PAN were 1.10,0.75,0.65,and 0.88 ppbv in spring,summer,autumn,and winter,respectively,with a 1-year average of 0.81±0.60 ppbv.Calculations indicate that the loss of PAN through thermal decomposition in summer accounts for 43.2% of the total formed PAN,which is an important reason for the low concentration of PAN in summer.We speculate that since the correlation between PAN and O_(3) in winter is significantly lower than that in other seasons,the observed regional transport of PAN cannot be ignored in winter.Through budget analysis,regional transport accounted for 12.8% and 55.9% of the observed PAN on the spring and winter pollution days,respectively,which showed that regional transport played key roles during the photochemical pollution of the rural NCP in winter.The potential source contribution function revealed that the transported PAN mainly comes from southern Hebei in spring.In winter,the transported PAN was mainly from Langfang,Hengshui,and southern Beijing.Our findings may aid in understanding PAN variations in different seasons in rural areas and highlight the impact of regional transport on the PAN budget.

Riverine sulfate sources and behaviors in arid environment,Northwest china:Constraints from sulfur and oxygen isotopes

The fate of riverine sulfate ion (SO_(4)^(2-)) and its environmental effects in arid environment are difficult to evaluate due to its complicated sources and strongly coupled behaviors with water cycle which is significantly modified by humans.To understand the sulfur cycle in aquatic systems in arid environment,the chemical and sulfur and oxygen isotopic compositions (δ^(34)S_(SO4)and δ^(18)O_(SO4)) of major rivers around the Badain Jaran Desert,northwestern china,were investigated.These rivers had averaged SO_(4)^(2-)content at 1336μmol/L,over 10times higher than the global average.The δ^(34)S_(SO4)and δ^(18)O_(SO4)values ranged from-5.3‰to+11.8‰and+1.6‰to+12.8‰,respectively.The end-member analysis and the inverse model showed that riverine sulfate was mainly derived from evaporites dissolution (0-87%),sulfide oxidation (13%-100%) and precipitation (0-33%),indicating heterogeneity in sulfur sources and behaviors along the river drainage with the lithology variations and climate gradients.Multiple isotopic tools combining with hydro-chemistry compositions could be applied to reveal sulfur cycle in arid environment.Based on the calculation,sulfide oxidation plays the primary role in the headwater and upstream in the Qilian-Mountains area,where sulfide is widely exposed.While the proportion of evaporites dissolution contributing to riverine sulfate is much higher in downstream in a drier environment.Besides,less precipitation and higher temperature can lead to more intensive evaporation,affecting the process of sulfide oxidation and enhancing the rates of evaporites dissolution and sulfate precipitation in the basin.

Diversity and ecological assembly process of aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria in a low irradiation area,Three Gorges Reservoir

Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria(AAPB)are significant bacterial groups in aquatic ecosystems,known for their rapid growth and photoheterotrophic characteristics.However,the distribution and ecological assembly process of AAPB in low irradiation freshwater basins remain unclear,warranting further investigation.In this study,we present the diversity,abundance,spatial variations,ecological process,and community interaction of AAPB in sediment of Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR)under low irradiation.Our findings demonstrate the dominant genera of AAPB community that exist in the TGR area also are appeared in different waters,with some regional preference.Moreover,the concentration of pufM gene,an indicator for AAPB,maintains a consistently high numerical level ranging from(2.21±0.44)×10^(4)to(9.98±0.30)×10^(7)gene copies/g.Although solar irradiation is suggested as the major factor affecting AAPB,it remains unclear whether and how AAPB differ between regions due to varying solar irradiation levels.Our results show spatial differences between total bacteria and AAPB communities,with significant differences observed only in AAPB.Geographical and environmental factor contributed less than 10%to the spatial difference of community,with sediment type and environmental factors being the key factors influencing microbial community structure.The stochastic process plays a dominant role in the aggregation and replacement of AAPB communities,among which the most contribution is dispersal limitation.For AAPB network,Yoonia and Gemmobacter are the hubs for modules.Those results valuable insights into the AAPB communities in TGR with low irradiation.

Whole-genome sequencing in medicinal plants:current progress and prospect

Advancements in genomics have dramatically accelerated the research on medicinal plants,and the development of herbgenomics has promoted the“Project of 1K Medicinal Plant Genome”to decipher their genetic code.However,it is difficult to obtain their high-quality whole genomes because of the prevalence of polyploidy and/or high genomic heterozygosity.Whole genomes of 123 medicinal plants were published until September 2022.These published genome sequences were investigated in this review,covering their classification,research teams,ploidy,medicinal functions,and sequencing strategies.More than 1,000 institutes or universities around the world and 50 countries are conducting research on medicinal plant genomes.Diploid species account for a majority of sequenced medicinal plants.The whole genomes of plants in the Poaceae family are the most studied.Almost 40%of the published papers studied species with tonifying,replenishing,and heat-cleaning medicinal effects.Medicinal plants are still in the process of domestication as compared with crops,thereby resulting in unclear genetic backgrounds and the lack of pure lines,thus making their genomes more difficult to complete.In addition,there is still no clear routine framework for a medicinal plant to obtain a high-quality whole genome.Herein,a clear and complete strategy has been originally proposed for creating a high-quality whole genome of medicinal plants.Moreover,whole genome-based biological studies of medicinal plants,including breeding and biosynthesis,were reviewed.We also advocate that a research platform of model medicinal plants should be established to promote the genomics research of medicinal plants.

Context‑dependent antioxidant defense system(ADS)‑based stress memory in response to recurrent environmental challenges in congeneric invasive species

Marine ecosystems are facing escalating environmental fluctuations owing to climate change and human activities,imposing pressures on marine species.To withstand recurring environmental challenges,marine organisms,especially benthic species lacking behavioral choices to select optimal habitats,have to utilize well-established strategies such as the antioxidant defense system(ADS)to ensure their survival.Therefore,understanding of the mechanisms governing the ADS-based response is essential for gaining insights into adaptive strategies for managing environmental challenges.Here we conducted a com-parative analysis of the physiological and transcriptional responses based on the ADS during two rounds of'hypersalinity-recovery'challenges in two model congeneric invasive ascidians,Ciona robusta and C.savignyi.Our results demonstrated that C.savignyi exhibited higher tolerance and resistance to salinity stresses at the physiological level,while C.robusta demonstrated heightened responses at the transcriptional level.We observed distinct transcriptional responses,particularly in the utilization of two superoxide dismutase(SOD)isoforms.Both Ciona species developed physiological stress memory with elevated total SOD(T-SOD)and glutathione(GSH)responses,while only C.robusta demonstrated transcriptional stress memory.The regulatory distinctions within the Nrf2-Keap1 signalling pathway likely explain the formation disparity of transcriptional stress memory between both Ciona species.These findings support the'context-dependent stress memory hypothesis',emphasizing the emergence of species-specific stress memory at diverse regulatory levels in response to recurrent environmental challenges.Our results enhance our understanding of the mechanisms of environmental challenge manage-ment in marine species,particularly those related to the ADS.

Schottky infrared detectors with optically tunable barriers beyond the internal photoemission limit

Internal photoemission is a prominent branch of the photoelectric effect and has emerged as a viable method for detecting photons with energies below the semiconductor bandgap.This breakthrough has played a significant role in accelerating the development of infrared imaging in one chip with state-of-the-art silicon techniques.However,the performance of these Schottky infrared detectors is currently hindered by the limit of internal photoemission;specifically,a low Schottky barrier height is inevitable for the detection of low-energy infrared photons.Herein,a distinct paradigm of Schottky infrared detectors is proposed to overcome the internal photoemission limit by introducing an optically tunable barrier.This device uses an infrared absorbing material-sensitized Schottky diode,assisted by the highly adjustable Fermi level of graphene,which subtly decouples the photon energy from the Schottky barrier height.Correspondingly,a broadband photoresponse spanning from ultraviolet to mid-wave infrared is achieved,with a high specific detectivity of 9.83×1010 cm Hz1/2 W−1 at 2,700 nm and an excellent specific detectivity of 7.2×109 cm Hz1/2 W−1 at room temperature under blackbody radiation.These results address a key challenge in internal photoemission and hold great promise for the development of the Schottky infrared detector with high sensitivity and room temperature operation.

Non-B-form DNA is associated with centromere stability in newly-formed polyploid wheat

Non-B-form DNA differs from the classic B-DNA double helix structure and plays a crucial regulatory role in replication and transcription.However,the role of non-B-form DNA in centromeres,especially in polyploid wheat,remains elusive.Here,we systematically analyzed seven non-B-form DNA motif profiles(A-phased DNA repeat,direct repeat,G-quadruplex,inverted repeat,mirror repeat,short tandem repeat,and Z-DNA)in hexaploid wheat.We found that three of these non-B-form DNA motifs were enriched at centromeric regions,especially at the CENH3-binding sites,suggesting that non-B-form DNA may create a favorable loading environment for the CENH3 nucleosome.To investigate the dynamics of centromeric non-B form DNA during the alloploidization process,we analyzed DNA secondary structure using CENH3 ChIP-seq data from newly formed allotetraploid wheat and its two diploid ancestors.We found that newly formed allotetraploid wheat formed more non-B-form DNA in centromeric regions compared with their parents,suggesting that non-B-form DNA is related to the localization of the centromeric regions in newly formed wheat.Furthermore,non-B-form DNA enriched in the centromeric regions was found to preferentially form on young LTR retrotransposons,explaining CENH3's tendency to bind to younger LTR.Collectively,our study describes the landscape of non-B-form DNA in the wheat genome,and sheds light on its potential role in the evolution of polyploid centromeres.

Programmable synthetic receptors:the next-generation of cell and gene therapies

Cell and gene therapies hold tremendous promise for treating a range of difficult-to-treat diseases.However,concerns over the safety and efficacy require to be further addressed in order to realize their full potential.Synthetic receptors,a synthetic biology tool that can precisely control the function of therapeutic cells and genetic modules,have been rapidly developed and applied as a powerful solution.Delicately designed and engineered,they can be applied to finetune the therapeutic activities,i.e.,to regulate production of dosed,bioactive payloads by sensing and processing user-defined signals or biomarkers.This review provides an overview of diverse synthetic receptor systems being used to reprogram therapeutic cells and their wide applications in biomedical research.With a special focus on four synthetic receptor systems at the forefront,including chimeric antigen receptors(CARs)and synthetic Notch(synNotch)receptors,we address the generalized strategies to design,construct and improve synthetic receptors.Meanwhile,we also highlight the expanding landscape of therapeutic applications of the synthetic receptor systems as well as current challenges in their clinical translation.
