Calculation of Surface Excitation Parameters by a Monte Carlo Method

Electron inelastic mean free path （IMFP） is an important parameter for surface chemical quantification by surface electron spectroscopy techniques. It can be obtained from analysis of elastic peak electron spectroscopy （EPES） spectra measured on samples and a Monte Carlo simulation method. To obtain IMFP parameters with high accuracy, the surface excitation effect on the measured EPES spectra has to be quantified as a surface excitation parameter （SEP）, which can be calculated via a dielectric response theory. However, such calculated SEP does not include influence of elastic scattering of electrons inside samples during their incidence and emission processes, which should not be neglected simply in determining IMFP by an EPES method. In this work a Monte Carlo simulation method is employed to determine surface excitation parameter by taking account of the elastic scattering effect. The simulated SEPs for different primary energies are found to be in good agreement with the experiments particularly for larger incident or emission angles above 60° where the elastic scattering effect plays a more important role than those in smaller incident or emission angles. Based on these new SEPs, the IMFP measurement by EPES technique can provide more accurate data.

Energy Recovery from MSW Treatment by Gasification and Melting Technology

The increase of waste production, joined to the difficulties concerning both the identification of new disposal sites and the construction of big conventional incinerators, led in recent years to the development of new technologies for waste management such as gasification and melting treatments. The possibility to introduce in the Italian context the DMS （direct melting system） technology, designed and manufactured by Nippon Steel Engineering Co. Ltd., has been taken into account for the scope of proposed work. DMS technology consists in MSW gasification, slags melting and combustion of the syngas produced, with the consequent generation of electric energy through a steam cycle. The system minimizes environmental impact, thanks to an effective recycling of useful resources such as inert melted slags and metals, featuring high flexibility in terms of treatment capacity due to its modular design. The aim of this article is to consider different plant configurations in order to optimize the energy recovery downstream the DMS module. As a case study, landfill gas exploitation integrated in the DMS plant will be considered as a typical situation that could occur in the Italian scenario. The energetic input provided by the biogas allows improving the thermo-economic performances according to market incentives.

Resection of giant gastric GIST with a new generation ultrasonic scalpel device

Gastrointestinal stroma tumours(GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumour in the digestive tract and commonly found in the stomach. The patient described in this report presented with collapse and a palpable abdominal mass. He was found to have a large gastric GIST that penetrated through the mesocolon. Resection of the GIST was technically challenging but facilitated by a new generation ultrasonic scalpel device. In resection of gastric cancer the use of ultrasonic scalpels has been shown to reduce operating time, blood loss and length of stay. We feel that in technically challenging cases of gastric GIST the use of an ultrasonic scalpel device may be justified as well.

Drawing the identity of architect:Liu Jipiao as an artistic architect in the late 1920s China

This article investigates the responsibility of architectural drawing in developing the professional identity of modern architects in the late 1920s when Chinese architects started to emerge and assume the title of“architect.”Using architectural drawing as both its subject and its method,this research interrogates how a representative figure-Liu Jipiao employed the power of drawing to establish the identity of the modern Chinese *** paper argues that architectural drawing,in establishing the identity of the Chinese architect,faced the requirement to build an affinity between the architect and the *** entangled history of these two professions offers up Liu as the representative figure of the artistic ***’s artistic drawing fulfilled the previously mentioned requirement and earned the architects the artistic power that distinguished them from their counterparts-the *** the perspective of multiple modernities,the paper challenges the contemporary misreading of Liu Jipiao as an irrelevant individual intellectual and of his practice as a minor ***,this article invites further reflection on the modernity of Chinese architectural drawing,and shows how such drawing made more attempts to convey subjectivity rather than to transmit modern technique per se.

Overexpression of heme oxygenasel protects smooth muscle cells against oxidative injury and inhibits cell proliferation

To investigate whether the expression of exogenous heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene within vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) could protect the cells from free radical attack and inhibit cell proliferation, we established an in vitro transfection of human HO-1 gene into rat VSMC mediated by a retroviral vector. The results showed that the profound expression of HO-1 protein as well as HO activity was 1.8- and 2.0-fold increased respectively in the transfected cells compared to the non-transfected ones. The treatment of VSMC with different concentrations of H2O2 led to the remarkable cell damage as indicated by survival rate and LDH leakage. However, the resistance of the HO-1 transfected VSMC against H2O2 was significantly raised. This protective effect was dramatically diminished when the transfected VSMC were pretreated with ZnPP-IX, a specific inhibitor of HO, for 24 h. Respiration protocols have been developed to manipulate mental states,including their use for therapeutic *** this systematic review,we discuss evidence that respiration may play a fundamental role in coordinating neural activity,behavior,and *** main findings are:(1)respiration affects the neural activity of a wide variety of regions in the brain;(2)respiration modulates different frequency ranges in the brain’s dynamics;(3)different respiration protocols(spontaneous,hyperventilation,slow or resonance respiration)yield different neural and mental effects;and(4)the effects of respiration on the brain are related to concurrent modulation of biochemical(oxygen delivery,pH)and physiological(cerebral blood flow,heart rate variability)*** conclude that respiration may be an integral rhythm of the brain’s neural *** provides an intimate connection of respiration with neuro-mental features like emotion.A respiratory-neuro-mental connection holds the promise for a brain-based therapeutic usage of respiration in mental disorders.

Shear behavior of intact granite under thermo-mechanical coupling and three-dimensional morphology of shear-formed fractures

The shear failure of intact rock under thermo-mechanical(TM)coupling conditions is common,such as in enhanced geothermal mining and deep mine *** the effect of a continuous engineering disturbance,shear-formed fractures are prone to secondary instability,posing a severe threat to deep *** numerous studies regarding three-dimensional(3D)morphologies of fracture surfaces have been conducted,the understanding of shear-formed fractures under TM coupling conditions is *** this study,direct shear tests of intact granite under various TM coupling conditions were conducted,followed by 3D laser scanning tests of shear-formed *** results demonstrated that the peak shear strength of intact granite is positively correlated with the normal stress,whereas it is negatively correlated with the *** internal friction angle and cohesion of intact granite significantly decrease with an increase in the *** anisotropy,roughness value,and height of the asperities on the fracture surfaces are reduced as the normal stress increases,whereas their variation trends are the opposite as the temperature *** macroscopic failure mode of intact granite under TM coupling conditions is dominated by mixed tensileeshear and shear *** the normal stress increases,intragranular fractures are developed ranging from a local to a global distribution,and the macroscopic failure mode of intact granite changes from mixed tensileeshear to shear ***,3D morphological characteristics of the asperities on the shear-formed fracture surfaces were analyzed,and a quadrangular pyramid conceptual model representing these asperities was proposed and sufficiently verified.

Digital Twin-Empowered Network Planning for Multi-Tier Computing

In this paper,we design a resource management scheme to support stateful applications,which will be prevalent in sixth generation(6G)*** from stateless applications,stateful applications require context data while executing computing tasks from user terminals(UTs).Using a multi-tier computing paradigm with servers deployed at the core network,gateways,and base stations to support stateful applications,we aim to optimize long-term resource reservation by jointly minimizing the usage of computing,storage,and communication resources and the cost of reconfiguring resource *** coupling among different resources and the impact of UT mobility create challenges in resource *** address the challenges,we develop digital twin(DT)empowered network planning with two elements,i.e.,multi-resource reservation and resource reservation ***,DTs are designed for collecting UT status data,based on which UTs are grouped according to their mobility ***,an algorithm is proposed to customize resource reservation for different groups to satisfy their different resource ***,a Meta-learning-based approach is developed to reconfigure resource reservation for balancing the network resource usage and the reconfiguration *** results demonstrate that the proposed DTempowered network planning outperforms benchmark frameworks by using less resources and incurring lower reconfiguration costs.

Dear Editor,Beige adipocytes,which increase energy expenditure by dissipating energy as heat,have gained attention as a therapeutic target for combating obesity.1 Adipocytes express many types of G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs),each of which has a unique preference for the Gs,Gi,Gq,and G12 *** the function of Gs-coupledβ-adrenergic receptors in beige adipocyte induction is well established,2 little is known about the function of G12-coupled GPCRs beyond its suppressive roles in white adipocyte maturation.3 In this study,we generated transgenic mice conditionally expressing a G12-coupled designer GPCR using a Cre-loxP system and investigated the potential effects of G12 signaling on adipocyte biology.

Atomic and molecular processes relevant to the volumetric recombinationphenomena were investigated in a linear divertor plasma simulator MAP-Ⅱ. Volumetric recombinationis induced in He plasma by puffing of He or H_2. In the He puffing case, the reduction of the ionflux is dominated by the electron-ion recombination. In the H_2 puffing case, however, it isdominated by the molecule-assisted recombination (MAR), which is characterized by the disappearanceof the Helium Rydberg spectra and by the existence of the hydrogen negative ions. Currentachievement and the future prospect are described.
