Effectiveness of electroacupuncture for female stress urinary incontinence: a systematic review and Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture(EA)for female stress urinary incontinence(SUI).METHODS:We searched 12 databases electronically from inception to November 2018 without language *** included randomized controlled trials(RCTs)involving women with SUI,but excluded other types of urinary incontinence or studies that were not *** independent reviewers extracted study characteristics,with disagreements resolved by *** were pooled and expressed as mean difference(MD)for continuous outcomes and relative risk(RR)for dichotomous outcomes,with 95%confidence intervals(CI).This study was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews(number CRD42018089734).RESULTS:We found very low to high level evidence that EA improved the effective rate(RR=2.03,95%CI:1.40,2.95;P=0.0002)and reduced urine leakage as measured by the 1-hour pad test(MD=3.33,95%CI:0.89,5.77;P=0.008),International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form score(MD=3.14,95%CI:2.42,3.85;P<0.00001),and 72-hour incontinence episodes(MD=1.17,95%CI:0.56,1.78;P=0.0002)compared with sham electroacupuncture(SA),pelvic floor muscle training,and ***:The effectiveness and safety of EA for key outcomes for women with SUI are statistically significantly better than those of SA,but most available evidence is very low or low *** well-designed RCTs are needed to confirm these findings.

Asymptotic behavior for sums of non-identically distributed random variables

For any given positive integer m, let X_i, 1 ≤ i ≤ m be m independent random variables with distributions F_i, 1 ≤ i ≤ m. When all the summands are nonnegative and at least one of them is heavy-tailed, we prove that the lower limit of the ratio ■equals 1 as x →∞. When the summands are real-valued, we also obtain some asymptotic results for the tail probability of the sums. Besides, a local version as well as a density version of the above results is also presented.

Numerous reports have identified a dysbiosis in the intestinal microbiota in patients suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD),yet the mechanism(s)in which this complex microbial community initiates or perpetuates inflammation remains *** purpose of this review is to present evidence for one such mechanism that implicates enteric microbial derived proteases in the pathogenesis of *** highlight and discuss studies demonstrating that proteases and protease receptors are abundant in the digestive ***,we investigate studies demonstrating an association between increased luminal protease activity and activation of protease receptors,ultimately resulting in increased intestinal permeability and exacerbation of colitis in animal models as well as in human *** are essential for the normal functioning of bacteria and in some cases can serve as virulence factors for pathogenic *** not classified as traditional virulence factors,proteases originating from commensal enteric bacteria also have a potential association with intestinal inflammation via increased enteric *** of increased protease activity in stools from IBD patients support a possible mechanism for a dysbiotic enteric microbiota in IBD.A better understanding of these pathways and characterization of the enteric bacteria involved,their proteases,and protease receptors may pave the way for new therapeutic approaches for these diseases.

Platelets dynamically participate in various physiological processes, including wound repair, bacterial clearance, immune response, and tumor metastasis. Recreating the specific biological features of platelets by mimicking the structure of the platelet or translocating the platelet membrane to synthetic particles holds great promise in disease treatment. This review highlights recent advancements made in the platelet-mimicking strategies. The future opportunities and translational challenges are also discussed.

On the Local and Stratified Likelihood Approaches in Single-Index Hazards Model

Traffic Impacts on Fine Particulate Matter Air Pollution at the Urban Project Scale: A Quantitative Assessment

Formal health impact assessment (HIA), currently underused in the United States, is a relatively new process for assisting decision-makers in non-health sectors by estimating the expected public health impacts of policy and planning decisions. In this paper we quantify the expected air quality impacts of increased traffic due to a proposed new university campus extension in chapel hill, North Carolina. In so doing, we build the evidence base for quantitative HIA in the United States and develop an improved approach for forecasting traffic effects on exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in air. Very few previous US HIAs have quantified health impacts and instead have relied on stakeholder intuition to decide whether effects will be positive, negative, or neutral. Our method uses an air dispersion model known as CAL3QHCR to predict changes in exposure to airborne, traffic-related PM2.5 that could occur due to the proposed new campus development. We employ CAL3QHCR in a new way to better represent variability in road grade, vehicle driving patterns (speed, acceleration, deceleration, and idling), and meteorology. In a comparison of model predictions to measured PM2.5 concentrations, we found that the model estimated PM2.5 dispersion to within a factor of two for 75% of data points, which is within the typical benchmark used for model performance evaluation. Applying the model to present-day conditions in the study area, we found that current traffic contributes a relatively small amount to ambient PM2.5 concentrations: about 0.14 μg/m3 in the most exposed neighborhood—relatively low in comparison to the current US National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 12 μg/m3. Notably, even though the new campus is expected to bring an additional 40,000 daily trips to the study community by the year 2025, vehicle-related PM2.5 emissions are expected to decrease compared to current conditions due to anticipated improvements in vehicle technologies and cleaner fuels.

The relationship between sexual selection and speciation

1 Introduction The intriguing relationship between sexual selection and speciation has sparked an increasing number of pa- pers in recent years that have attempted to draw connec- tions between the two processes. These include a myriad of theoretical and empirical studies, as well as several influential reviews （e.g. Price, 1998; Panhuis et al., 2001, Kirkpatrick and Ravign6, 2002; Ritchie, 2007; Maan and Seehausen, 2011）. In particular, many re- searchers have speculated on whether sexual selection can lead to speciation, either alone, or in conjunction with ecological processes. Such speculation is tempting in part because of the obvious differences in secondary sexual characters that often exist between closely re- lated species. Indeed one of the earliest and most influ- ential of all sexual selection models, Lande＇s （1981） paper ＂Models of speciation by sexual selection on a polygenic trait＂ centered its title on the role that sexual selection may play in speciation.
