Effect of BaF2 addition on luminescence properties of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glasses

Er/Ybco-doped phosphate glasses(PO-AlO-BaO-BaF-KO-ErO-YbO) with varying BaFcontent,were prepared by a conventional melt quenching technique and their spectroscopic properties were examined through the Raman, absorption, emission and decay measurements. Raman spectra(350-1400 cm) of the Er/Ybco-doped phosphate glasses with varying BaFcontent, were recorded upon laser excitation at 785 nm. near infrared luminescence spectra were measured in the1400-1600 nm region under 970 nm diode laser excitation and characteristic band was observed at1533 nm corresponding to ~4Ⅰ→~4Ⅰtransition of Erion. The decay curves for the ~4Ⅰlevel of Erion, were measured and the lifetime is found to decrease from 7.94 to 7.70 ms when BaFcontent increases from 0 to 8 mol% and then increases up to 7.83 ms with further increase in BaFcontent(12 mol%). The emission cross-section.lifetime and figure of merit for the ~4Ⅰ→~4Ⅰtransition of Erion were evaluated and compared to the other host matrices. The upconversion luminescence was measured and intense red emission was observed for all the studied samples.

Odontogenic tumours are a heterogeneous group of lesions that develop in the oral cavity region and are characterized by the formation of tumoural structures that differentiate as teeth. Due to the diversity of their histopathological characteristics and clinical behaviour, the classification of these tumours is still under debate. Alterations in morphogenesis pathways such as the Hedgehog,MAPK and WnT/β-catenin pathways are implicated in the formation of odontogenic lesions, but the molecular bases of many of these lesions are still unknown. In this study, we used genetically modified mice to study the role of IKKβ(a fundamental regulator of nF-κB activity and many other proteins) in oral epithelial cells and odontogenic tissues. Transgenic mice overexpressing IKKβ in oral epithelial cells show a significant increase in immune cells in both the oral epithelia and oral submucosa. They also show changes in the expression of several proteins and mi RnAs that are important for cancer development. Interestingly, we found that overactivity of IKKβ in oral epithelia and odontogenic tissues, in conjunction with the loss of tumour suppressor proteins(p53, or p16 and p19), leads to the appearance of odontogenic tumours that can be classified as ameloblastic odontomas, sometimes accompanied by foci of secondary ameloblastic carcinomas. These tumours show nF-κB activation and increased β-catenin activity.These findings may help to elucidate the molecular determinants of odontogenic tumourigenesis and the role of IKKβ in the homoeostasis and tumoural transformation of oral and odontogenic epithelia.

Respiratory pathogens kill more people than any other infectious agent each year worldwide.development of novel,economically friendly,sustainable,and highly efficient materials against viruses is a major challenge.Herein,we describe a nanostructured material composed of very small crystalline phosphate copper nanoparticles synthesized using a new biohybrid technology that employs a biological agent for its formation at room temperature in aqueous media.The evaluation of different enzymes in the final preparation of the nanomaterial or even in synthetic methods was performed.Biochemical characterization revealed the formation of Cu species in the protein network.The best biomaterial synthesized using a lipase called BioCunPs showed excellent inhibition capacity against functional proteins of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2);for example,assent 3-chymotrypsin like protease(3CLpro)complete inhibition was achieved by using 5µg/mL,or acetone(ACE)–spike protein interaction was inhibited by more than 80%in the presence of 400µg/mL of BioCunPs.Taking these in vitro results into account,an efficacy analysis against human coronavirus 229E(HCoV-E229)coronavirus was performed.A virus reduction of 99%was obtained in 5 min.Additionally,SARS-CoV-2 virus was tested to demonstrate high efficiency,with>99%inhibition in 15 min using 500 microgram of material.To determine the wide applicability of this nanohybrid against viruses,an evaluation was carried out against a non-enveloped virus such as Human Rhinovirus(HRV-14),obtaining a virus reduction of 99.9%in 5 min.Finally,the virucidal capacity against different bacteriophages was also evaluated,obtaining an excellent inhibition effect against PhageΦX174(99.999%reduction in 5 min).

The effects of kafirins on protein and amino acid ileal digestibility have not been evaluated in vivo in pigs.The aim of this study was to determine the effects of protein profile on apparent ileal digestibility(AID)of amino acids. We used a sorghum hybrid with low tannin content(nt plots with different kafirin profile. Sorghum with greater content of total kafirins had less content of y-and al-kafirins and higher content of β-and a2-kafirins than that with lower content of total kafirins. Two sorghum-soybean meal(SBM) diets were formulated: 1) low kafirin(LK) content(32.2 g/kg) and 2) high kafirin(HK) content(48.1 g/kg). A control diet(maize-SBM) and a reference SBM-diet were also prepared. The reference diet was fed to all pigs following the experimental period and was used to estimate the AID of cereals by the difference method. 'T' cannulas were fixed in the distal ileum of 18 barrows(6 by treatment), divided into 2 groups of 9 pigs. The pigs were fed 2.5 times their maintenance requirement of digestible energy(110 kcal/kg BW00.75). The AID of dry matter,protein, amino acids, and energy of the experimental diets was measured;the AID of cereals(maize, LK sorghum and HK sorghum) was estimated by the difference method. The maize-SBM diet was more digestible than the sorghum-SBM diets, only with respect to valine(P ne in the maize-SBM diet was higher than that in sorghum-SBM diets. The changes in kafirin profile between the diets only affected the AID of threonine(P decreased by 9.5 percentage units in LK diet compared with HK diet. The onset and mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases remain uncertain. The main features of neurodegenerative diseases have been related with cellular and molecular events like neuronal loss, mitochondrial dysfunction and aberrant accumulation of misfolded proteins or peptides in specific areas of the brain. The most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases belonging to age-related pathologies are Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Interestingly, mitochondrial dysfunction has been observed to occur during the early onset of several neuropathological events associated to neurodegenerative diseases. The master regulator of mitochondrial quality control and energetic metabolism is the transcriptional coactivator peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha(PGC-1α). Additionally, it has been observed that PGC-1α appears to be a key factor in maintaining neuronal survival and synaptic transmission. In fact, PGC-1α downregulation in different brain areas(hippocampus, substantia nigra, cortex, striatum and spinal cord) that occurs in function of neurological damage including oxidative stress, neuronal loss, and motor disorders has been seen in several animal and cellular models of neurodegenerative diseases. Current evidence indicates that PGC-1α upregulation may serve as a potent therapeutic approach against development and progression of neuronal damage. Remarkably, increasing evidence shows that PGC-1α deficient mice have neurodegenerative diseases-like features, as well as neurological abnormalities. Finally, we discuss recent studies showing novel specific PGC-1α isoforms in the central nervous system that appear to exert a key role in the age of onset of neurodegenerative diseases and have a neuroprotective function in the central nervous system, thus opening a new molecular strategy for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. 生境丧失和破碎化是热带森林生物多样性的主要威胁。遮荫的可可种植园(SCP)等农业生态系统为热带森林生物群提供了庇护。然而,在这些转化后的生境中是否还维持种间生态的相互作用,目前尚鲜为人知。我们评定附生兰花群落的多样性、繁殖状态和光合代谢(CAM或C3),以及与热带雨林(TRF)相比,它们与SCP中寄主树种(附生植物)之间的相互作用。在墨西哥东南部,对TRF和SCP中各三个采样地点进行研究。每个采样地点建立了4个400平方米的样地,调查记录所有兰花及其附生植物。我们依据花/果实(或残体)是否存在来确定每个兰花个体的繁殖(成体)或非繁殖(幼体)状态,并根据文献确定每种兰花的光合作用途径。我们采用真正的分集和生态网络的方法分别分析兰花的多样性以及兰科与附生植物间的相互作用。我们一共记录了47个兰花种的607个个体。在TRF(19个有效物种)中的兰花多样性高于SCP(11个有效物种),两个生境之间仅共享7个物种。SCP(53%)中的CAM兰花物种比TRF(14%)更常见。在群落水平上,SCP维持了非生殖兰花和生殖兰花的比例以及TRF兰科附生植物网络的嵌套结构和特异化水平。然而,SCP中仅保留一部分的TRF附生兰花,突显出保护TRF的重要性。尽管存在这种差异,诸如SCP类型的遮荫农业生态系统仍然可以维持天然林的一些多样性和功能,因为SCP附生兰花群落主要由CAM物种组成,其附生植物构成了一个嵌套的相互作用网络,对干扰形成了更强的抗性。

Spectral analysis of short-wavelength emission by up-conversion in a Tm3+:ZBLAn dual-diode-pumped optical fiber

The fluorescence evolution along Tm3+-doped Zr F4–Ba F2–La F3–Al F3–na F(ZBLAn) optical fibers, as well as amplified spontaneous emission in the UV-IR region with emphasis on 350 nm, 365 nm, and 450 nm, is studied,estimating optimal fiber lengths for amplification within the region. The fibers were diode-pumped with single and double lines(687 and/or 645 nm). Double-line pumping presents a quite superior efficiency for producing UV-blue signals with the benefit of requiring very short fibers, around 20 cm, compared to single-line pumping requiring more than 50 cm. A virtual cycle in which the pumps enhance each other’s absorption is the key to these systems.

The immune system is a fascinating world of cells,soluble factors,interacting cells,and tissues,all of which are interconnected.The highly complex nature of the immune system makes it difficult to view it as a whole,but researchers are now trying to put all the pieces of the puzzle together to obtain a more complete picture.The development of new specialized equipment and immunological techniques,genetic approaches,animal models,and a long list of monoclonal antibodies,among many other factors,are improving our knowledge of this sophisticated system.The different types of cell subsets,soluble factors,membrane molecules,and cell functionalities are some aspects that we are starting to understand,together with their roles in health,aging,and illness.This knowledge is filling many of the gaps,and in some cases,it has led to changes in our previous assumptions;e.g.,adaptive immune cells were previously thought to be unique memory cells until trained innate immunity was observed,and several innate immune cells with features similar to those of cytokine-secreting T cells have been discovered.Moreover,we have improved our knowledge not only regarding immune-mediated illnesses and how the immune system works and interacts with other systems and components(such as the microbiome)but also in terms of ways to manipulate this system through immunotherapy.The development of different types of immunotherapies,including vaccines(prophylactic and therapeutic),and the use of pathogens,m onodonal antibodies,recombinant proteins,cytokines,and cellular immunotherapies,are changing the way in which we approach many diseases,especially cancer.

We report for the first time the presence of local populations of the starfish Odontaster penicillatus in the regions of Atacama and Antofagasta,Chile.This finding indicates an extension of the distribution limit of 500 km with respect to the last observation made in 2007 in Isla Grande de Atacama.A total of 121 specimens of O.penicillatus were recorded at depths of between 8 m and 24 m.They were associated with rocky substrate and with different species of barnacles,sponges and bryozoans.The presence of O.penicillatus expands the knowledge of the benthic biodiversity of the region,and the development of studies on its ecological importance will be promoted.
