Solid Particle Erosion Behaviour of TiN Coating on AISI 4140 Steel

In this study, the performance against erosive wear of PVD TiN (titanium nitride) coating was evaluated using an erosion test rig similar to that described in the standard ASTM G76-95. This coating normally has various industrial applications such as tapping, drilling, dry machining and punching. Angular silicon carbide (SiC) was used as an abrasive particle with a grain size of 350-450 μm. Erosion tests were carried out using different incident angles, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° with a particle velocity of 24 ± 2 m/s, an abrasive flow rate of 0.7 ± 0.5 g/min, and the test temperature was between 35°C and 40°C. The particle velocity and the abrasive flow rate were low in all of the tests to reduce the interaction between the incident and the rebounding particles in the system. The surfaces were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterize the erosive damage. The wear mechanisms identified were brittle fracture characterized by radial cracks on the surface by multiple impact and a few pits at 30°, while a few cracks and the formation of craters in random positions were observed at angles near or at 90°. Elliptical scars were observed at 30° and 45°, which are a characteristic feature when the specimens are impacted at low-incident angles (α ≤ 45°) whereas a roughly circular scar was seen at 60° and 90°. In addition, roughness variations were analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), before and after the erosion tests, and the results exhibited an increase in the roughness as the TiN samples were impacted at angles near or at 90°.

To the Editor,Sarcoidosis is a disease known for over a century and remains enigmatic in etiology and pathophysiology.1 While the pulmonary manifestation prevails in more than 90%of cases,sarcoidosis can affect any ***,it targets the eyes,skin,lymph nodes,and,in rare instances,the liver and spleen.2 The development of the disease is significantly influenced by genetic and environmental factors,as well as gene variations on chromosome ***,first-degree relatives of patients have a heightened risk factor of *** adverse prognostic factors involve being of Black race,female gender,and having a lower *** increased incidence of sarcoidosis among firefighters who responded to the 9/11 disaster highlighted environmental triggers,including agricultural employment,metalworking,firefighting,exposure to inorganic and silica dust,and handling building supplies.1 Clinical symptoms can vary widely depending on the affected *** often relies on characteristic chest radiography findings,but approximately 10%of patients show noncaseating granulomas on biopsy without pulmonary abnormalities.2 Herein,we present a unique case of multiorgan sarcoidosis,where the sole manifestations were severe thrombocytopenia,weight loss,and a history of cerebral vascular events.

dengue is one of the most prominent tropical epidemic diseases present in the Rio de Janeiro city and Southeast part of Brazil, due to the widespread conditions of occurrence of the dengue vector, the mosquito Aedesaegypti, such as high-temperature days interlaced with afternoon or nocturnal rainstorms in summer. This work has the objective of investigating the relationships between variabilities of the El Ni?o-South Oscillation (ENSO) and greater epidemics of dengue in Rio de Janeiro city. To accomplish this goal, the analysis and signal decomposition by cross-wavelet transform (WT) was applied to obtain the cross variability associated with variations of power and phase of both signals by characteristic periods and along with the time series. Data considered in the analysis are (the decimal logarithm of normalized value) of the monthly available notifications of dengue worsening, provided by the public health system of Brazil, and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) Ni?o 3.4 data, provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in the period 2000-2017. A maximum cross-wavelet power close to 0.45 was obtained for the representative period of 1 year and also to periods between 3 and 4 years, associated with the positive phase of the SOI index (i.e. , La Ni?a) or with a transition to the positive phase. The evolution of the combined variability of SOI and dengue can be expressed by progressive differences in phase along the time, eventually resulting in yielding phases (i.e., La Niña-dengue epidemic).

BACKGROUND Autoimmunity has emerged as a probable disease modifier in patients with clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),that is,patients who have insulin resistance,obesity,and other cardiovascular risk factors,suggesting that the presence of glutamic acid decarboxylase(anti-GAD65),islet antigen 2(anti-IA2),and zinc transporter 8(anti-Zn8T)antibodies could have deleterious effects on beta cell function,causing failure and earlier requirement for insulin *** To evaluate anti-GAD65,anti-IA2 and anti-Zn8T as predictors of early insulin requirement in adolescents with a clinical diagnosis of *** This was a case–control study in patients with clinically diagnosed with T2DM(68 cases and 64 controls with and without early insulin dependence respectively),male and female,aged 12–18 ***,blood pressure,glucose,insulin,C-peptide,glycated hemoglobin A1c,and lipid profiles were *** was used to measure anti-GAD65,anti-IA2,and anti-Zn8T *** statistics,Pearson'sχ2 test,Student's t test,and logistic regression was performed.Pdered statistically *** There were 132 patients(53.8%female),with a mean age was 15.9±1.3 years,and there was a disease evolution time of 4.49±0.88 *** presence of anti-GAD65,anti-IA2,and anti-Zn8T positivity was found in 29.5%,18.2%,and 15.9%,*** the groups by early or no insulin dependence showed that the group with insulin had a higher frequency of antibody positivity:anti-GAD65 odds ratio(OR):2.42(1.112–5.303,P=0.026);anti-IA2:OR:1.55(0.859–2.818,P=0.105);and anti-Zn8T:OR:7.32(2.039–26.279,P=0.002).CONCLUSION Anti-GAD65 positivity was high in our ***-GAD65 and anti-Zn8T positivity showed a significantly depleted beta cell reserve phenotype,leading to an increased risk of early insulin dependence.

Metformin Modulates GLP-1- and GIP-Mediated Intracellular Signaling under Normoglycemic Conditions

GLP-1 and GIP promote insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells by inducing intracellular signals such as Ca2+ and cAMP. Metformin primarily acts by inhibiting glucogenesis in the liver and promoting glucose metabolism in the muscle. It is used as a concomitant drug with the incretin in the treatment of T2D. We focused on intracellular signals under various glucose concentrations and assessed the effects of metformin on incretin signaling in MIN6 β-cells. Metformin inhibited incretin-induced [Ca2+]i in the presence of 5.5 mM glucose but not 16.7 mM glucose. In accordance with low [Ca2+]i, insulin secretion from MIN6 cells declined, despite enhanced incretin-induced cAMP production. Abundant expressions of Adcy 6 and 9, which are negatively controlled by Ca2+ signals, were detected in MIN6 cells. Thus, increasing cAMP production was associated with the inhibition of Ca2+ mobilization by metformin. However, we show that metformin controls insulin secretion by inhibiting incretin-mediated [Ca2+]i under normoglycemic conditions.

Curimat?-pioa (Prochilodus costatus) and curimat?-pacu (Prochilodus argenteus) are migratory fish species endemic to the S?o Francisco River Basin in Brazil. Both species play important roles in local fisheries and ecology in the Paraopeba River. A dam was recently constructed on this river and to help in the development and conservation programs, we characterized the genetic variation of both species before dam construction. Complex hypervariable repeats micro-satellite was used to asses genetic variation for both species within and between the five collection sites in order to detect population substructuring. Nucleotide substitutions and insertion/deletion polymorphisms (indels) resulted in 35 P. costatus haplotypes (sample size = 89) and 22 P. argenteus haplotypes (sample size = 32). Significant genetic diversity and population differentiation was detected between five sampling sites for both species. Therefore, each of the five sites should be regarded as a group comprising significant genetic differences in species conservation and maintenance plans. Comparing these results to genetic diversity measures after dam construction will be critical for future management in this region.

Hyponatremia is a common electrolyte disturbance usually observed in neurosurgical patients undergoing surgical management of traumatic, as well as, nontraumatic intracranial pathology. The spinal cord trauma is also associated with occasional development of such hyponatremia;it usually occurs within the first two-weeks of the injury. Hyponatremia can lead to alterations of consciousness, convulsions, coma, cardiac arrhythmias and on rare occasions, death. Authors present a practical oriented review of the literature.

＜正＞This paper presents a climate characterization methodology for comfort *** climate characterization is based on the measured climatic variables collected by a meteorological automatic station for 7 municipalities of the State of Morelos,***,a typical building in the State of Morelos is selected to calculate energy loads by two methodologies:the heating and cooling degree-days and TRNSYS for different micro-climate conditions of the 7 *** two methodologies are compared. Maps and graphs of monthly average temperatures,incident solar radiation,degree-days and energy loads are presented. The results show that,if we built the typical building built in Morelos,the center and south locations of the State of Morelos requires a very high amount of energy for cooling, 5528 ***,the north of the State of Morelos requires an amount,2130 KWh,for heating in some municipalities for the same type of building.

Chemical Characterization and Application of the Essential Oils from Chenopodium ambrosioides and Philodendron bipinnatifidum in the Control of Diabrotica speciosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

The compositions of essential oils from Chenopodium ambrosioides L. and Philodendron bipinnatifidum Schott were determined, and the their potential effects on the nutrition and mortality of Diabrotica speciosa were studied. The extraction of the oils was performed by hydrodistillation (2 h) using a modified Clevenger apparatus and the oils were subsequently subjected to analysis by gas chromatography/flame ionization detector (CG/FID) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications was adopted. The bean plants were sprayed with solutions of the oils dissolved in aqueous Tween 80 solutions at concentrations of 0 (water + Tween 80), 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% and then furnished to the insects with no choice available. Seven days after the application, the percentage of leaves with injury, degree of defoliation, the preference index for consumption and the percent of mortality of insects were evaluated. Neither of the essential oils caused a reduction in foliar injury, but antifeeding activity was observed, causing reduced feeding and increasing the mortality of adult D. speciosa insects.
