This paper summarizes results of a survey of the operational status of tropical cyclone(TC) forecast verifi-cation in the western North Pacific region, covering the Members of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee, RSMC Tokyo-Typhoon Center, and JTWC. Results of the survey indicate that significant efforts have been focused on the verification of TC forecast guidance by operational forecast agencies in the region, either individually or through international cooperation. A variety of TC forecast verification products are available to the forecasters in either real time or in post-season through multiple means, with the main focus on the deterministic track and intensity forecasts. Only a few verification products are available for probabilistic forecasts. Verification of TC precipitation and high wind forecasts are also lacking sufficient attention in the region. It would be helpful in the future to focus more attention toward these aspects and incorporate methods that will provide a greater depth of information regarding the TC forecast performance.

Anxiolytic and free radical scavenging potential of Chinese celery(Apium graveolens) extract in mice

Objective: To elucidate the anxiolytic and free radical scavenging effect of methanolic extract of Apium graveolens(A. graveolens) in adult C57BL/6 ***: Sixty male mice were divided into 6 groups: control, vehicle, positive control and A. graveolens(125, 250 and 500 mg/kg). Different behavioral models of elevated plus maze, open field, light/dark, hole-board and pentobarbital-induced sleep were used to assess anxiety-like behavior. Biochemical parameters including monoamine oxidase-A(MAO-A) activity, lipid peroxidation, % inhibition of superoxide anion and glutathione peroxidase activity were measured. Histologic studies were also ***: Mice receiving various doses of A. graveolens(125, 250 and 500 mg/kg)showed an alleviation of anxiety-like behavior as evidenced by the battery of behavioral tests. Likewise, A. graveolens treatment was found to significantly decrease MAO-A activity, lipid peroxidation as well as cause a significant increase of % inhibition of superoxide anion and glutathione peroxidase activity in both cortex and striatum. The total number of survival neurons found in the frontal cortex and striatum was significantly higher than that of the vehicle-treated ***: Taken together, we showed that A. graveolens improve the behavioral changes which might be related to the inhibition of free radicals and modulation of MAOA activity resulting in an increased number of survival neurons. Our findings suggest the therapeutic potential of A. graveolens in the treatment of anxiety.

Influence of Strong tropical Volcanic Eruptions on Daily Temperature and Precipitation Extremes Across the Globe

This study investigates the influences of strong tropical volcanic eruptions(SVEs) on daily temperature and precipitation extreme events using long-term simulations from the Hadley centre Coupled Model version 3(HadCM3) and the Community Earth System Model version 1.1(CESM1). The results indicate that the occurrences of daily hot extremes and daily heavy precipitation extremes decrease over most parts of the world in the peak forcing years of SVEs. Due to the volcanic cooling effect, the average probability of daily hot extremes decreases by approximately 50% across the globe. The decrease in intensity is stronger for midlatitude land regions and tropical South *** contrast, daily cold extremes occur more frequently over most parts of continental regions. Globally, a cold extreme event expected once every 3 years under non-volcanic conditions can be expected every 1.5 years on average in the peak forcing years. Overall, the SVE-induced cooling effect plays a dominant role in regulating daily cold and hot extremes. Over high-latitude Eurasian regions, in contrast to other continental regions, the probability and intensity of daily cold extremes decrease due to an SVE-strengthened polar vortex and the associated temperature advection anomalies. With regard to daily heavy precipitation extremes, the probability and intensity both decrease over most monsoon areas. Further analysis suggests that the reduced probability and intensity of daily heavy precipitation extremes are mainly due to the SVE-induced global decrease in the water-holding capacity.

Outcome of patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia treated with high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy:A retrospective study

Objective:To assess the effectiveness of high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy and evaluate possible factors associated with 28-day mortality in hospitalised patients with severe COVID-19 ***:We conducted a single-centre retrospective cohort study on hospitalised patients with clinical,epidemiological,and/or radiologically confirmed and suspected COVID-19 at Bitlis Tatvan State Hospital in Turkey between December 1,2020 and June 1,*** data of the study participants were recorded,and all patients received intravenous high-dose corticosteroid pulse *** Ordinal Scale for Clinical Improvement(OSCI),Charlson Comorbidity Index and Total Severity Score were *** and multivariate Cox regression models were performed to evaluate the clinical and laboratory parameters that may affect the 28-day ***:A total of 126 patients were included in the *** 28-day mortality rate of the patients was 22.2%.Laboratory and clinical improvement were observed in 77.8%(98/126)of patients after high-dose corticosteroid pulse *** was a statistically significant difference between the survivors and non-survivors in terms of age,platelet count,neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio,and OSCI,Charlson Comorbidity Index,and Total Severity Score(P<0.001).Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that age[HR 1.047(95%CI 1.01-1.08)],use of prophylactic anticoagulation[HR 0.838(95%CI 0.79-0.89)],and bacterial co-infection[HR 3.966(95%CI 1.40-11.21)]were significant determinants of *** C-reactive protein(CRP)response,decreased oxygen requirement,and improving respiratory rate/OSCI scores after administration of high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy could contribute to clinical ***:CRP response,needed oxygen and OSCI scores can be used as prognostic factors to select patients who will benefit from high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy.

Objective:To determine the morphological and molecular characterization of Acanthamoeba isolates from contact lens paraphernalia in Malaysia and to investigate their pathogenic potential based on the physiological ***:One hundred and eighty contact lens wearers donated their contact lens,lens storage cases and lens solutions between2018 and *** samples were inoculated onto 1.5%nonnutrient agar plates for 14 *** chain reaction(PCR)was performed and the amplified PCR products were sequenced and compared with the published sequences in *** pathogenic potential of positive isolates was further tested using temperature-tolerance and osmo-tolerance *** species were categorized into three distinct morphological groups established by Pussard and ***:Acanthamoeba was successfully isolated from 14(7.8%)culture-positive samples in which 11 belong to morphological groupⅡand 3 belong to morphological groupⅢ,*** sequencing of 18 S ribosomal RNA gene led to the identification of the T4 genotype in all the isolated *** vitro assays revealed that 9(64.3%)Acanthamoeba isolates were able to grow at 42℃and 1 M mannitol and were thus considered to be highly ***:To the best of our knowledge,this is the first report identifying the Acanthamoeba genotype and their pathogenic potential among contact lens wearers in *** potentially pathogenic T4 genotype isolated in this study is the most predominant genotype responsible for human ocular infection ***,increasing attention should be aimed at the prevention of contamination by Acanthamoeba and the disinfection of contact lens paraphernalia.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves outcome of snake envenomation:tertiary center experience

Aim:Snakebite injuries of the extremities are common in tropical India among those involved in farming and outdoor *** injuries often complicated by cellulitis,gangrene,regional lymphadenopathy,compartment syndrome,bleeding abnormalities,septicemia,hypotension,and disseminated intravascular coagulation,resulting in significant morbidity and *** purpose of the study is to share our experience of hyperbaric oxygen(HBO)therapy in the management of snakebite ***:All patients who were treated for snakebite injuries in our department between October 2012 and October 2013 were included in the ***:Out of a total 395 patients,174 patients treated with anti-snake venom with a mortality of 17 ***-four out of the 174 patients was in the pediatric age *** of the patients referred to our department,23 presented with cellulitis,7 with compartment syndrome and 17 for the management of soft tissue cover over the *** the 47 patients,30 involved the lower extremity and rest involved the upper *** patients were subjected to HBO therapy as an *** patients required flap cover:cross finger flap(n=2),anterolateral thigh free tissue transfer(n=1),lateral supramalleolar flap(n=1),groin flap(n=1),and dorsal metacarpal artery flap(n=1).There was no need for fasciotomy among the patients who suffered impending compartment ***:HBO therapy may reduce the incidence of fasciotomy and increase the effectiveness of plastic surgical modalities if administered early and may be used as a useful adjunct in the management of snake envenomation injury.

Analysis of the Causes of a Low Cloud and Low Visibility Weather at Cangyuan Washan Airport

At 11:00 am on August 5, 2017, Cangyuan Washan Airport experienced low cloud and low visibility weather, accompanied by aircraft turbulence, which affected the normal operation of flights, which was closely related to the meteorological conditions at that time. Using the hourly reanalysis data of the European centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5 (ERA5), including Geopotential height, temperature, precipitation, wind field, specific humidity, vorticity and other elements, with a spatial resolution of 0.25° × 0.25°, this paper focuses on the horizontal distribution and vertical configuration of various physical quantities before and after the occurrence of low cloud and low visibility weather at the airport. The results indicate that the main influencing system of this low cloud and low visibility weather is the westward tropical depression. Before the occurrence of low cloud and low visibility weather, low-level water vapor converges and is accompanied by precipitation. The temperature decreases with precipitation, the near-surface wind direction changes, and the wind speed decreases.

Environmental Energetics aspects of anomalous Cyclogenesis over indian Ocean during 2013

An attempt has been made to understand the dynamics behind anomalous cyclogenesis over North Indian Ocean during 2013 cyclone seasons, from an atmospheric energetics point of view. For that various energy terms, their generation and conversion terms have been computed using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data during different phases of the intense cyclonic vortices formed in 2013 over North Indian Seas. It is observed that maximum intensification of all the intense cyclonic vortices was associated with an enhancement in both conversions viz., from eddy available potential energy (AE) to eddy kinetic energy (KE) and zonal kinetic energy (KZ) to eddy kinetic energy (KE). Energetics analysis suggested that during intensification of the storms, dissipation of both eddy available potential energy ( AE )and zonal available potential energy (AZ) have taken place, suggesting the intensification of storms at the cost of AE and AZ. For all of these systems baroclinic eddy kinetic energy conversions i.e. from AE to KE dominates over barotropic eddy kinetic energy conversions i.e. from KZ to *** cyclogenesis in 2013, was partly attributed to a positive anomaly in moist static energy of the environment along with positive anomaly in baroclinic and barotropic eddy kinetic energy conversions during cyclone seasons over the region under study. Release of convective instability in the atmosphere can be partly attributed for anomalous cyclogenesis in 2013.
