Preferences and Motivations of Women Who Use Traditional Contraceptive Methods to Avoid Pregnancy in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review

Introduction: When it comes to family planning, requirements and preferences vary among couples. Because of their mixed effectiveness, traditional contraceptive methods are often associated and accounted as unmet needs. However, interest in these methods is growing significantly. Nevertheless, knowledge of the reasons for the decision and using traditional contraceptive methods remains limited. The purpose of this study was to identify the preferences and motivations of women who use traditional contraceptive methods to avoid pregnancy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Method: A literature search was conducted in three electronic databases (PubMed/Biomed Central/Medline, Embase, CINAHL). Two independent individuals selected the eligible quantitative, qualitative, and mixed studies published between 2011 and 2020. We conducted a narrative synthesis to organize and group preferences and motivations that facilitate traditional contraceptive methods use. Results: Abstinence, withdrawal, breastfeeding, rhythm method were the main preferences to contraceptive planning methods identified. Factors influencing the use of traditional contraceptive methods were the lack of knowledge, the side effects, the bad experience with the modern contraceptive methods, spousal communication around family planning, the husband’s opposition to modern methods, availability, accessibility, and the absence of side effects as well as the character of the traditional methods, the fact of living in an urban environment as well as the age beyond 30 years. Conclusion: This review identified preferences and motivations for using traditional contraceptive methods. These findings could be considered in different family planning programs to understand their role and help to estimate the contraceptive prevalence better.

AIM:To complete a quality audit using recently published criteria from the Quality Assurance Task group of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable.MetHODS:Consecutive colonoscopy reports of patients at average/high risk screening,or with a prior colorectal neoplasia (CRN) by endoscopists who perform 11 000 procedures yearly,using a commercial computerized endoscopic report generator.A separate institutional database providing pathological results.Required documentation included patient demographics,history,procedure indications,technical descriptions,colonoscopy findings,interventions,unplanned events,follow-up plans,and pathology results.Reports abstraction employed a standardized glossary with 10% independent data validation.Sample size calculations determined the number of reports needed.RESULTS:Two hundreds and fifty patients (63.2 ± 10.5 years,female:42.8%,average risk:38.5%,personal/family history of CRN:43.3%/20.2%) were scoped in June 2009 by 8 gastroenterologists and 3 surgeons (mean practice:17.1 ± 8.5 years).Procedural indication and informed consent were always documented.14% provided a previous colonoscopy date (past polyp removal information in 25%,but insufficient in most to determine surveillance intervals appropriateness).Most procedural indicators were recorded (exam date:98.4%,medications:99.2%,difficulty level:98.8%,prep quality:99.6%).All reports noted extent of visualization (cecum:94.4%,with landmarks noted in 78.8% photodocumentation:67.2%).No procedural times were recorded.One hundred and eleven had polyps (44.4%) with anatomic location noted in 99.1%,size in 65.8%,morphology in 62.2%;removal was by cold biopsy in 25.2% (cold snare:18%,snare cautery:31.5%,unrecorded:20.7%),84.7% were retrieved.Adenomas were noted in 24.8% (advanced adenomas:7.6%,cancer:0.4%) in this population with varying previous colonic investigations.CONCLUSION:This audit reveals lacking reported items,justifying additional research to optimize quality of reporting.

The gender gap in the practice of intensive care medicine has increasingly been recognized as a problem in recent years.despite limited information,the available data suggest that representation of women in the physician workforce,academic positions,and leadership roles in intensive care is inadequate globally.In this article,we describe the situation of female intensive care unit(ICU)physicians from the perspective of Chinese intensivists.The proportion of female ICU physicians in China has been increasing in recent years.The biggest challenges faced by female ICU physicians include balance of work and life,difficulties in career planning,and lack of academic influence.More attention and policy support should be provided to help them play a better role in intensive care medicine.

The 17q12-21 locus harboring ORMDL sphingolipid biosynthesis regulator 3(ORMDL3)and gasdermin B(gSDMB)genes exhibits one of the most significant and replicated associations with asthma[MIM:600807](Stein et al.,2018).Several studies explored the complex interactions between SNPs,gene expression and epigenetic modifications at this locus,primarily focusing on the levels of expressed ORMDL3 and gSDMB(Stein et al.,2018).given that DNA methylation and gene expression signals are cell-type specific(Reinius et al.,2012),isolated materials such as lymphocytes from blood and,to a lesser extent,bronchial epithelial cells from biopsies of bronchi or bronchoalveolar lavages have been used in a number of studies to investigate such interactions(Stein et al.,2018).

Aims Habitat connectivity is important in conservation since isolation can diminish the potential of a population for adaptation and increase its risk of extinction.However,conservation of naturally patchy ecosystems such as peatlands has mainly focused on preserving specific sites with exceptional characteristics,neglecting the poten-tial interconnectivity between patches.In order to better under-stand plant dynamics within a peatland network,we assessed the effect of population isolation on genetic distinctiveness,phenotypic variations and germination rates using the peatland-obligate white-fringed orchid(Platanthera blephariglottis).Methods Fifteen phenotypic traits were measured for 24 individuals per pop-ulation(20 distinct populations,Quebec,Canada)and germination rates of nearly 20000 seeds were assessed.genetic distinctiveness was quantified for 26 populations using single nucleotide polymor-phism markers obtained via a pooled genotyping-by-sequencing approach.geographic isolation was measured as the distance to the nearest population and as the number of populations occurring in concentric buffer zones(within a radius of 2,5 and 10 km)around the studied populations.Important Findings All phenotypic traits showed significant differences among popu-lations.genetic results also indicated a pattern of isolation-by-distance,which suggests that seed and/or pollen exchange is restricted geographically.Finally,all phenotypic traits,as well as a reduced germination rate,were correlated with either geographic isolation or genetic distance.We conclude that geographic iso-lation likely restricts gene flow,which in turn may affect germi-nation.Consequently,it is imperative that conservation programs take into account the patchy nature of such ecosystems,rather than targeting a few specific sites with exceptional character for preservation.

In this study,we introduce a novel bioinformatics program,Spore-associated Symbiotic Microbes Position-specific Function(SeSaMe PS Function),for position-specific functional analysis of short sequences derived from metagenome sequencing data of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.The unique advantage of the program lies in databases created based on genus-specific sequence properties derived from protein secondary structure,namely amino acid usages,codon usages,and codon contexts of 3-codon DNA 9-mers.SeSaMe PS Function searches a query sequence against reference sequence database,identifies 3-codon DNA 9-mers with structural roles,and creates a comparative dataset containing the codon usage biases of the 3-codon DNA 9-mers from 54 bacterial and fungal genera.The program applies correlation principal component analysis in conjunction with K-means clustering method to the comparative dataset.3-codon DNA 9-mers clustered as a sole member or with only a few members are often structurally and functionally distinctive sites that provide useful insights into important molecular interactions.The program provides a versatile means for studying functions of short sequences from metagenome sequencing and has a wide spectrum of applications.SeSaMe PS Function is freely accessible at ***.

Apoptosis is an integral part of the spermatogenic process, necessary to maintain a proper ratio of Sertoli to germ cell numbers and provide an adequate microenvironment to germ cells. Apoptosis may also represent a protective mechanism mediating the elimination of abnormal germ cells. Extensive apoptosis occurs between the first and second postnatal weeks, at the point when gonocytes, precursors of spermatogonial stem cells, should have migrated toward the basement membrane of the tubules and differentiated into spermatogonia. The mechanisms regulating this process are not well-understood. gonocytes undergo phases of proliferation, migration, and differentiation which occur in a timely and closely regulated manner. gonocytes failing to migrate and differentiate properly undergo apoptosis. Inadequate gonocyte differentiation has been suggested to lead to testicular germ cell tumor （TgCT） formation. Here, we examined the expression levels of apoptosis-related genes during gonocyte differentiation by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, identifying 48 pro- and anti-apoptotic genes increased by at least two-fold in rat gonocytes induced to differentiate by retinoic acid, when compared to untreated gonocytes. Further analysis of the most highly expressed genes identified the pro-apoptotic genes gadd45a and Cycs as upregulated in differentiating gonocytes and in spermatogonia compared with gonocytes. These genes were also significantly downregulated in seminomas, the most common type of TgCT, compared with normal human testicular tissues. These results indicate that apoptosis-related genes are actively regulated during gonocyte differentiation. Moreover, the down-regulation of pro-apoptotic genes in seminomas suggests that they could represent new therapeutic targets in the treatment of TgCTs.

The effects of mixing time and curing temperature on the uniaxial compressive strength （UCS） andmicrostructure of cemented hydraulic fill （CHF） and sodium silicate-fortified backfill （gelfill） wereinvestigated in the laboratory. A series of CHF and gelfill samples was mixed for time periods rangingfrom 5 min to 60 min and cured at temperatures ranging from 5 C to 50 C for 7 d, 14 d or 28 d.Increasing the mixing time negatively influenced the UCS of gelfill samples, but did not have a detectableeffect on CHF samples. The curing temperature had a strong positive impact on the UCSs of both gelfilland CHF. An elevated temperature caused rapid UCS development over the first 14 d of curing. Mercuryintrusion porosimetry （MIP） indicated that the pore size distribution and total porosity of gelfill werealtered by curing temperature.
