Taxonomic and metabolic shifts in the Coorong bacterial metagenome driven by salinity and external inputs

The Coorong estuary lies at the terminus of Australia's largest river system, the Murray-Darling; both are strongly influenced by human activities; including farming and extensive flow modification. Metagenomic approaches were used to determine the planktonic bacterial community composition and potential metabolic function at two extremes in the Coorong, the river mouth which exhibits marine-like salinity, and the hypersaline upper-reaches of the estuary. Significant shifts in taxa and metabolic function were seen between the two sites. The river mouth exhibited an increase in abundance of R hodobacteriaceae and Alteromonadaceae; families readily able to adapt to change in nutrient conditions; and the potentially pathogenic families B rucellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Vibrionaceae. Metabolisms over-represented include motility and chemotaxis, RNA metabolism and membrane transport, all of which are involved in actively searching for and obtaining nutrients. Also over-represented were metabolisms involved in population succession and stress response. An over-representation of taxa and metabolisms indicative of environmental change is reflective of anthropogenically af fected riverine input. In the hypersaline upper reaches of the estuary, the halophilic family Ectothiorhodospiraceae was over-represented, as were the families Flavobacteriaceae, Cytophagaceae and Nocardioidaceae, members of which are able to survive over a wide salinity range. Metabolisms over-represented here were reflective of increased bacterial growth, characteristic of hypersaline environments, and included DNA metabolism, nucleotide and nucleoside synthesis and cell cycle. Coorong metagenomes clustered taxonomically and metabolically with other planktonic metagenomes, but remained an outlier of this group with only 71% and 84% similarity, respectively. Homogeneous and vertically aligned silicon nanowires(SiNWs)were successfully fabricated using silver assisted chemical etching *** prepared samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy and atomic force *** degradation properties of graphene oxide(GO)modified SiNWs have been *** found that the SiNWs morphology depends on etching time and etchant *** SiNWs length could be tuned from 1 to 42μm,respectively when varying the etching time from 5 to 30 *** etchant concentration was found to accelerate the etching process;doubling the concentrations increases the length of the SiNWs by a factor of two for fixed etching *** in bundle morphology were also studied as function of etching *** SiNWs diameter was found to be independent of etching time or etchant composition while the size of the SiNWs bundle increases with increasing etching time and etchant *** addition of GO was found to improve significantly the photocatalytic activity of SiNWs.A strong correlation between etching parameters and photocatalysis efficiency has been observed,mainly for SiNWs prepared at optimum etching time and etchant concentrations of 10 min and 4:1:8.A degradation of92%was obtained which further improved to 96%by addition of hydrogen *** degradation efficiency of 16%and 31%has been observed for bare Si and GO/bare Si samples *** obtained results demonstrate that the developed SiNWs/GO composite exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance and could be used as potential platform for the degradation of organic pollutants.

The deposition of insoluble proteinaceous aggregates in the form of amyloidﬁbrils within the extracellular space of tissues is associated with numerous *** development of molecular approaches to arrest amyloid formation and prevent cel-lular degeneration remains very challenging due to the complexity of the process of protein aggregation,which encompasses an inﬁnite array of conformations and quaternary *** biopolymers,such as glycosaminoglycans and RNAs,have been shown to modulate the self-assembly of amyloidogenic polypep-tides and to reduce the toxicity induced by the formation of oligomeric and/or pre-ﬁbrillar *** study evaluates the effects of double-stranded DNA(dsDNA)nanostructures(1D,2D,and 3D)on amyloid self-assembly,ﬁbril dis-aggregation,and the cytotoxicity associated with *** the islet amyloid polypeptide(IAPP)whose pancreatic accumulation is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes,it was observed that dsDNA nanostructures inhibit amyloid formation by inducing the formation of spherical complexes in which the peptide adopts a random coil ***,the DNA nanostructures showed a per-sistent ability to disassemble enzymatically and thermodynamically stable amyloidﬁbrils into nanoscale DNA/IAPP entities that are fully compatible withβ-pancreatic cells and are biodegradable by ***,dsDNA nanostructures avidly trapped highly toxic soluble oligomeric species in complete cell culture media and converted them into non-toxic binary ***,these results expose the potent modulatory effects of dsDNA on amyloidogenic pathways,and these DNA nanoscaffolds could be used as a source of inspiration for the design of molecules toﬁght amyloid-related disorders.

Systematic review of the non surgical management of Peyronie's disease

This systematic review shows the "Status quo" on medical treatment for Peyronie's disease(PD). PD is a connective tissue disorder, characterised by the formation of a fibrotic lesion or plaque in the tunica albuginea, which leads to penile deformity. The aetiology of PD is unknown. Nowadays the most widely accepted hypothesis proposed by Gonzalez-Cadavid et al, is repetitive microvascular injury or trauma to the tunica albuginea. Physicians have proposed several medical alternatives for treatment of this disease with few effective results. Nevertheless, as of today nonsurgical options are currently available, and some of them are able to stabilize or even reduce deformity while improving pain relief and sexual function. A systematic literature search throughout the Medline database was carried out. Thecontrolled vocabulary of the medical subject headings database employs the specific term "penile induratio" for PD. A total of 50 articles on PD were found. Studies were selected based on clinical relevance. The recommended standard of care for PD involves an initial treatment in the acute phase. Several non-operative treatment options have been used. Unfortunately no further substantial, quality evidence on the use of medical therapy currently exits. There is, however, an increasingly enhanced interest in this disorder and basic scientifi c and clinical research will eventually lead to a more effective methodology to study the disease.

Garnet-type solid-state batteries(SSBs)are considered to be one of the most promising candidates to realize next-generation lithium metal batteries with high energy density and ***,the dendrite-induced short-circuit and the poor interfacial contact impeded the practical ***,interface engineering to achieve low interfacial resistance without high temperature calcination was developed,which Li_(6.4)la_(3)Zr_(1.4)Ta_(0.6)O_(12)(LLZTO)was simply coated with complex hydride(Li_(4)(BH_(4))_(3)I(3L1L))in various mass ratios n(Li_(4)(BH_(4))_(3)I)-(100−n)LLZTO(10≤n≤40).The interfacial conductivity increases by more than three orders of magnitude from 8.29×10^(−6)S·cm^(−1)to 1.10×10^(−2)S·cm^(−1).Symmetric Li cells exhibit a high critical current density(CCD)of 4.0 mA·cm^(−2) and an excellent cycling stability for 200 h at 4.0 mA·cm^(−2).SSBs with polymeric sulfur-polyacrylonitrile(SPAN)cathode achieve a high discharge capacity of 1149 mAh·g^(−1) with a capacity retention of 91%after 100 cycles(0.2 C).This attempt guides a simple yet efficient strategy for obtaining a stable Li/LLZTO interface,which would promote the development of solid-state batteries.
