A new hemostatic agent composed of Zn^(2+)-enriched Ca^(2+)alginate activates vascular endothelial cells in vitro and promotes tissue repair in vivo

To control capillary bleeding, surgeons may use absorbable hemostatic agents, such as Surgicel® and TachoSil®. Due to their slow resorption, their persistence in situ can have a negative impact on tissue repair in the resected organ. To avoid complications and obtain a hemostatic agent that promotes tissue repair, a zinc-supplemented calcium alginate compress was developed: HEMO-IONIC®. This compress is non-absorbable and is therefore removed once hemostasis has been achieved. After demonstrating the hemostatic efficacy and stability of the blood clot obtained with HEMO-IONIC, the impact of Surgicel, TachoSil, and HEMO-IONIC on cell activation and tissue repair were compared (i) in vitro on endothelial cells, which are essential to tissue repair, and (ii) in vivo in a mouse skin excision model. In vitro, only HEMO-IONIC maintained the phenotypic and functional properties of endothelial cells and induced their migration. In comparison, Surgicel was found to be highly cytotoxic, and TachoSil inhibited endothelial cell migration. In vivo, only HEMO-IONIC increased angiogenesis, the recruitment of cells essential to tissue repair (macrophages, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells), and accelerated maturation of the extracellular matrix. These results demonstrate that a zinc-supplemented calcium alginate, HEMO-IONIC, applied for 10 min at the end of surgery and then removed has a long-term positive effect on all phases of tissue repair.

Objective:To evaluate the prevalence of toxoplasmosis and rubella among pregnant women at Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.Methods:All patient sera were tested for rubella and toxoplasmosis anti-IgG using commercial ELISA kits(PlateliaTMRubella IgG and Platelia? Toxo IgG).The presence of anti-rubella and anti-toxoplasmosis tgM in serum samples was tested using commercial ELISA kits Platelia Rubella TgM and Platelia Toxo IgM.Results:Among all the pregnant women tested for toxoplasmosis and rubella,their prevalence were 20.3% and 77.0%,respectively.Pregnant women in the age group of 18-25 years showed the highest frequency of anti-toxoplasmosis（34.5%） and anti-rubella IgG（84.6%）.The prevalence of anti-toxoplasma and anti-rubella IgG decreased between 2006 and 2008 from 32.7%to 12.1%and 84.6% to 65.0%,respectively.There was no significant association between age and the mean titer of anti-toxoplasmosis IgG among pregnant women.Conclusions:The diagnosis of toxoplasmosis and rubella is necessary in pregnant women in Burkina Faso because of the low immunization coverage rate of rubella and the high level of exposure to these two infections which can be harmful to the newborn if contracted by women before the third trimester of pregnancy.

Atmospheric pollution is today at the heart of all debates because of its potentially harmful effects on the environment, the climate, and human health;it currently constitutes a real public health problem. However, the increase in infertility around the world has led scientists to look for a link between air pollution and fertility. This study consisted of evaluating the short-term influence of automobile pollution on the semen parameters of mechanics in Brazzaville. A cross-sectional, analytical, prospective study between two groups (G1, exposed people and G2, unexposed people) was carried out in Brazzaville on 228 patients, i.e., G1 with 76 subjects and G2 with 152 subjects, between June 2020 and September 2022, a period of 27 months, in order to evaluate, on the one hand, the quality of sperm in men exposed to automobile pollution according to WHO recommendations and, on the other hand, the quality of the air by a colorimetric method, punctual on a Dräger tube coupled with a Dräger Accuro pump. The concentrations of automotive pollutants measured (CO, CO2, NO2, SO2) during this study were all above the 2021 air quality standards required by WHO. These results made it possible to establish a statistically significant link between air pollution and abnormal spermogram parameters, notably mobility, count, and morphology for the spermocytogram. Exposures to automobile pollutants can influence sperm quality, which is consistent with the results of our study. We observed an alteration in the morphology, mobility, and concentration of spermatozoa.

Atmospheric pollution is currently a real public health problem because of its potentially harmful effects on the environment as well as on human health. Several studies conducted in America, Europe, Asia, and Africa have established a significant link between air pollution and cancer, infertility, cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity, and mortality. This study aims to measure some automotive pollutants (CO, CO2, NO2, and SO2) by a selective and colorimetric method using a measurement system on Dräger reagent tubes coupled to a Dräger Accuro sampling pump in order to do a quantitative assessment of air quality in the nine districts of Brazzaville. The results obtained during this study revealed high concentration levels of pollutants (CO, CO2, NO2, SO2), all above the standards recommended by the WHO. The results obtained during this study made it possible to categorise Brazzaville as a polluted city.

Background: COVID-19, an infectious viral disease, has caused a global health crisis. Most cases remain asymptomatic. The majority of patients have mild symptoms while about 15% develop a severe form. The clinical spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 infection appears broad, encompassing asymptomatic infection, upper respiratory tract symptoms, and severe viral pneumonia with respiratory failure that can lead to death. Laboratory tests play an important role in the management of COVID-19 patients. In addition to being essential for the diagnosis, several biological analyses make it possible to identify the inflammatory processes and the potential complications of this disease. This study attempted to identify biochemical assays that could help in the prognosis of the disease to ensure early management. Methods: This was a descriptive study. It focused on patients hospitalized for COVID-19 from March 19, 2020, to January 26, 2021, at the Infectious Disease Management centre in Lomé (Togo). Medians were compared using the (Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon) test and frequencies were compared using the Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test. Results: We included 782 patients. The median age was 41 years IQR from 32 to 55. We observed several biochemical abnormalities in varying proportions for all biochemical parameters studied. Compared to non-serious patients, critically ill patients at admission had more frequently elevated urea, creatinine, transaminases, TG, GGT, CRP and blood glucose. Also, they had more frequent decreases in total cholesterol, HDL-c, blood chloride, and blood calcium. As for patients who died during hospitalization, compared with healed patients, they had more frequent elevations of urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, GGT. CRP and blood glucose. They also had a more frequent decrease in total cholesterol, HDL-c, blood chloride, blood calcium, and blood glucose (p = 0.025). Air pollution is today a real concern across the world, responsible for around 7 million deaths per year around the world. It is currently involved in the appearance and worsening of several non-transmissible pathologies, making it an environmental, health, and societal problem. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of short-term exposure to air pollution on the level of sex hormones in mechanics. We conducted a cross-sectional, analytical, prospective case-control study in Brazzaville on 228 patients (76 cases and 152 controls) from June 2020 to december 2022, a period of 30 months. This study made it possible to evaluate, on the one hand, the level of sexual hormones in men exposed to automobile pollution according to the automated method (ELFA) on mini vidas and, on the other hand, the quality of the air by a colorimetric, punctual method on a Dräger tube coupled with a Dräger accuro pump. The results obtained made it possible to establish a statistically significant link between automobile pollutants (CO, CO2, NO2, SO2) and the increase in LH and FSH on the one hand and the decrease in testosterone on the other hand. We also noted that the concentrations of automotive pollutants during this study were all above the standards required by the WHO. Exposure to automobile pollutants affects the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and therefore disrupts the level of sex hormones.

Factors Associated with Antigen HBs Seroconversion among Blood Donors in Ouagadougou from 2008 to 2017

Introduction: The risk of transmission of pathogens such as hepatitis B virus threatens the safety of transfused patients especially in high endemic areas. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and factors associated with hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) seroconversion in blood donors at the Regional Blood transfusion centre of Ouagadougou. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of voluntary non-remunerated blood donors (VNRBD), was conducted from 2008 to 2017. Data on HBsAg seroconversion were collected. The Kaplan-Meier method and the Log-Rank test were used to estimate the survival curves. Cox’s regression identified the factors associated with this seroconversion. Results: Of 23,494 donors, 559 had HBsAg seroconversion. The number of donor years was 58,637.50 and the HBV incidence rate was 9.53 per 1000 donor years. The median seroconversion time was 75.73 months with extremes of 2.7 months and 107.12 months. The risk of seroconversion was 1.30 times higher among donors aged 21 to 24 years old (p = 0.007) and 2.49 times higher among those over 24 years old (p der 21 years old. Female donors were 1.11 times more likely to seroconvert than male donors (p = 0.33). Donor residence was not significantly associated with HBsAg seroconversion (Hazard ratio = 1.12;p = 0.36). The risk of seroconversion decreased significantly with the number of blood donations (Hazard ratio = 0.58;p = 0.006). Conclusion: The incidence of HBsAg remains high among blood donors, which could have a negative impact on transfusion safety. The age of the blood donor was significantly associated to AgHBs seroconversion.

AIM:To study frequency of blood groups,prevalence of sickle-cell anemia trait and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency(G6PD),among consanguineous Yansi tribe.METHODS:A total of 525 blood samples were collected,of which 256 among the Yansi population,and269 for the unrelated control group in the Bandunduprovince of democratic Republic of Congo.Blood group antigens were determined in the following systems:ABO,Rh,Kell,Duffy,Kidd and MNS.Blood grouping and extended phenotype tests were performed according to standard immunohematological procedures.Spot tests and tandem mass spectrometry were used respectively for the assessment of G6PD and sickle-cell anemia trait.RESULTS:The frequency of ABO phenotypes conformed to the following order O>A>B>AB with notably 62.5%,23.8%,12.1%and 1.6%for the Yansi,and 54.6%,27.5%,14.1%and 3.7%for the unrelated control group,respectively(P=0.19).As for the Rh phenotypes,the most frequent were cc D.ee,cc D.Ee,Cc D.ee,corresponding to 71.5%,12.1%and 12.1%for the Yansi,and 70.6%,15.6%and 8.2%,for the unrelated control group(P=0.27).The frequency of MN and Ss phenotypes were statistically different between groups(P=0.0021 and P=0.0006).G6PD was observed in 11.3%of subjects in the Yansi group,and in 12.4%of controls(P=0.74).The sickle-cell anemia trait was present in 22.4%of Yansi subjects and 17.8%in the control group(P=0.24).Miscarriages and deaths in young age were more common among Yansi people.CONCLUSION:This study shows a significant difference in MNS blood group distribution between the Yansi tribe and a control population.The distribution of other blood groups and the prevalence of hemoglobinopathies did not differ in the Yansi tribe.

Hepatitis C virus(HCV)is a blood-borne pathogen that has a worldwide distribution and infects millions of people.Care-associated HCV infections represented a huge part of hepatitis C burden in the past via contaminated blood and unsafe injections and continue to be a serious problem of public health.The present review proposes a panorama of health care-associated HCV infections via the three mode of contamination that have been identified:(1)infected patient to non-infected patient;(2)infected patient to non-infected health careworker(HCW);and(3)infected HCW to non infected patient.For each condition,the circumstances of contamination are described together with the means to prevent them.As a whole,the more important risk is represented by unsafe practices regarding injections,notably with the improper use of multidose vials used for multiple patients.The questions of occupational exposures and infected HCWs are also discussed.In terms of prevention and surveillance,the main arm for combating care-associated HCV infections is the implementation of standard precautions in all the fields of cares,with training programs and audits to verify their good application.HCWs must be sensitized to the risk of blood-borne pathogens,notably by the use of safety devices for injections and good hygiene practices in the operating theatre and in all the invasive procedures.The providers performing exposed-prone procedures must monitor their HCV serology regularly in order to detect early any primary infection and to treat it without delay.With the need to stay vigilant because HCV infection is often a hidden risk,it can be hoped that the number of people infected by HCV via health care will decrease very significantly in the next years.

Is transfusion-transmitted dengue fever a potential public health threat?

dengue is an arboviruses due to single-stranded enveloped ribonucleic acid viruses, named dengue viruses(deNV), that include four serotypes and are mainly transmitted via the bite of mosquitoes of the genus Aedes(A. aegypti and A. albopictus). The distribution of the disease was historically limited to intertropical areas; however, during the last thirty years, the perimeter of the disease extended considerably and temperate areas are now at risk of outbreaks. The present global burden of dengue is considerable: 2.5 billion people over more than 100 countries are concerned; 50 to 100 million infections occur every year, with a number of fatal cases of approximately 20000. Although frequently asymptomatic or limited to a mild fever, dengue is responsible for severe cases mainly consecutive to the occurrence of hemorrhagic complications that can lead to shock and death, notably in children from poorresource settings. The place of deNV as a transfusiontransmitted pathogen has been recognized only in 2008. At the present time, only five cases of transfusiontransmitted dengue, including one case of dengue hemorrhagic fever, have been formerly documented. This review provides a general overview of dengue, its viruses and their vectors. It replaces the disease in the context of other viral diseases transmitted by arthropods. It discusses the threat of dengue on the supply of blood products in endemic and non endemic areas. Finally, it describes the specific and non specific measures available for improving the security of blood products with regards to this emerging risk. Interestingly, in 2009, the American Association of Blood Banks placed deNV in the highest category of emerging infectious agents for their potential impact on transfusion recipient safety for the next years in North America.
