Spatial variability of soil development indices and their compatibility with soil taxonomic classes in a hilly landscape: a case study at Bandar village, Northern Iran

Soil complexity and its multivariable nature restrict the precision of soil maps that are essential tools for soil sustainable management. Most methods developed for reducing impurities of soil map units focus on soil external properties. Taking into account the soil internal properties like geochemical weathering indices could increase the map unit's purity. However, the compatibility of these indices with Soil Taxonomic Classes has not been studied yet. This study has been performed in a hilly region with different soil types, vegetation and diverse topographic attributes to illustrate the spatial variability of soil weathering indices and their compatibility with Soil Taxonomic Classes. The grid sampling is at 100 m interval. Physico-chemical and total elemental analyses were performed on 184 and 56 soil samples respectively. Eight topographic attributes and 14 common soil development indices were determined. Principal components analysis(PCA) was done to identify the most important components. The results indicated that Morphological Index(MI) was the best index to show the degree ofsoil development in the studied region. Spatial distribution of Soil Taxonomic Classes showed relatively good compatibility with the first principal component(PC1), Vogt(V) and morphological indices. This study showed that using soil development indices with the conventional methods could be helpful tools in soil survey investigations.

Cholangiocarcinoma combined with biliary obstruction:an exosomal circRNA signature for diagnosis and early recurrence monitoring

Cholangiocarcinoma(CCA)is a highly malignant biliary tract cancer with currently suboptimal diagnostic and prognostic *** present a novel system to monitor CCA using exosomal circular RNA(circRNA)via serum and biliary liquid biopsies.A pilot cohort consisting of patients with CCA-induced biliary obstruction(CCA-BO,n=5)and benign biliary obstruction(BBO,n=5)was used to identify CCA-derived exosomal circRNAs through microarray *** was followed by a discovery cohort(n=20)to further reveal a CCA-specific circRNA complex(hsa-circ-0000367,hsa-circ-0021647,and hsa-circ-0000288)in both bile and serum *** vitro and in vivo studies revealed the three circRNAs as promoters of CCA *** and prognostic models were established and verified by two independent cohorts(training cohort,n=184;validation cohort,n=105).An interpreter-free diagnostic model disclosed the diagnostic power of biliary exosomal circRNA signature(Bile-DS,AUROC=0.947,RR=6.05)and serum exosomal circRNA signature(Serum-DS,AUROC=0.861,RR=4.04)compared with conventional CA19-9(AUROC=0.759,RR=2.08).A prognostic model of CCA undergoing curative-intent surgery was established by calculating early recurrence score,verified with bile samples(Bile-ERS,C-index=0.783)and serum samples(Serum-ERS,C-index=0.782).These models,combined with other prognostic factors revealed by COX-PH model,enabled the establishment of nomograms for recurrence monitoring of *** study demonstrates that the exosomal triple-circRNA panel identified in both bile and serum samples serves as a novel diagnostic and prognostic tool for the clinical management of CCA.

Reconstructing early transmission networks of SARS-CoV-2 using a genomic mutation model

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has greatly damaged human society,but the origins and early transmission patterns of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)pathogen remain ***,we reconstructed the transmission networks of SARS-CoV-2 during the first three and six months since its first report based on ancestor-offspring relationships using BANAL-52-referenced *** explored the position(i.e.,root,middle,or tip)of early detected samples in the evolutionary tree of *** total,6799 transmission chains and 1766 transmission networks were reconstructed,with chain lengths ranging from 1-9 *** root node samples of the 1766 transmission networks were from 58 countries or regions and showed no common ancestor,indicating the occurrence of many independent or parallel transmissions of SARS-CoV-2 when first detected(i.e.,all samples were located at the tip position of the evolutionary tree).No root node sample was found in any sample(n=31,all from the Chinese mainland)collected in the first 15 days from 24 December *** using six-month data or RaTG13-referenced mutation data were *** reconstruction method was verified using a simulation *** results suggest that SARS-CoV-2 may have already been spreading independently worldwide before the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan,***,a comprehensive global survey of human and animal samples is essential to explore the origins of SARS-CoV-2 and its natural reservoirs and hosts.

Dear Editor,Although effective vaccines and antiviral therapies are available,hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is still a serious global health *** HBV infection remains the principal cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).HBV is a small DNA virus,owning a~3.2 kb genome that encodes several proteins:viral DNA polymerase,core antigen(HBcAg),E antigen(HBeAg),three surface antigens(PreS1/PreS2/HBsAg),and a regulatory X protein(HBx)(Lamontagne et al.,2016).X protein,named for its lack of homology with any known proteins,is a 154 aa protein that plays an essential role in HBV biology and regulates the development of HCC(Yang et al.,2022).Although previous studies have strongly expanded our understanding of HBx,the regulation of HBx is not completely elucidated.

Inheritance of social dominance is associated with global sperm DNA methylation in inbred male mice

Dominance relationships between males and their associated traits are usually heritable and have implications for sexual selection in *** particular,social dominance and its related male pheromones are heritable in inbred mice;thus,we wondered whether epigenetic changes due to altered levels of DNA methylation determine ***,we used C57BL/6 male mice to establish a social dominance-subordination relationship through chronic dyadic encounters,and this relationship and pheromone covariation occurred in their offspring,indicative of *** transcriptome sequencing and whole-genome DNA methylation profiling of the sperm of both generations,we found that differential methylation of many genes was induced by social dominance-subordination in sires and could be passed on to the *** methylated genes were mainly related to growth and development processes,neurodevelopment,and cellular *** expression of the genes with similar functions in whole-genome methylation/bisulfite sequencing was also differentiated by social dominance-subordination,as revealed by *** particular,the gene Dennd1a,which regulates neural signaling,was differentially methylated and expressed in the sperm and medial prefrontal cortex in paired males before and after dominance-subordination establishment,suggesting the potential epigenetic control and inheritance of social dominance-related *** suggest that social dominance might be passed on to male offspring through sperm DNA methylation and that the differences could potentially affect male competition in offspring by affecting the development of thenervous system.

Revisiting the sex pheromone of the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda,a new invasive pest in South China

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is a worldwide serious agricultural pest,and recently invaded South *** pheromone can be employed to monitor its population dynamics accurately in the ***,the pheromone components previously reported by testing different geographic populations and strains are not *** the basis of confirming that the *** population from Yunnan Province belonged to the com strain,we analyzed the potential sex pheromone components in the pheromone gland extracts of females using gas chromatography coupled with electroan-tennographic detection(GC-EAD),gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry(GC-MS)and electroantennography(EAG).The results show that(Z)-9-tetradecenal acetate(Z9-14:Ac),(Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate(Z11-16:Ac),(Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate(Z7-12:Ac)or(E)-7-dodecenyl acetate(E7-12:Ac)with a ratio of 100:15.8:3.9 induced EAD responses to varying degrees:Z9-14:Ac elicited a strong EAD response,Z7-12:Ac or E7-12:Ac elicited a small but clear EAD response,while Z11-16:Ac elicited a weak EAD *** single sensillum recording(SSR)showed that Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac induced dose-dependent activities in two types(A and B)of sensilla in male antennae,respectively,while the sensilla in response to E7-12:Ac and Z11-16:Ac was not ***,wind tunnel tests reveal that Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac are two principal sex pheromone components of the tested population.
