Different environmental factors drive tree species diversity along elevation gradients in three climatic zones in Yunnan,southern China

Elevational patterns of tree diversity are well studied ***,few studies have examined how seedlings respond to elevational gradients and whether their responses vary across climatic *** this study,we established three elevational transects in tropical,subtropical and subalpine mountain forests in Yunnan Province,southern China,to examine the responses of tree species and their seedlings to elevational *** each transect,we calculated species diversity indices and composition of both adult trees and seedlings at different *** both adult trees and seedlings,we found that species diversity decreased with increasing elevation in both tropical and subalpine *** composition showed significant elevational separation within all three *** species had specific elevational preferences,but abundant tree species that occurred at specific elevations tended to have very limited recruitment in the *** results highlight that the major factors that determine elevational distributions of tree species vary across climatic ***,we found that the contribution of air temperature to tree species composition increased from tropical to subalpine transects,whereas the contribution of soil moisture decreased across these transects.

Prolonged milk provisioning and extended maternal care in the milking spider Toxeus magnus: biological implications and questions unresolved

Prolonged milk provisioning and extended parental care for nutritionally independent offspring, previously considered to only co-occur in long-lived mammals (Clutton-Brock, 1991;Royle et al., 2012), were recently reported in the reproduction of the milking spider, Toxeus magnus (Chen et al. 2018). Newly hatched T. magnus spiderlings require 53 days to develop to maturity, with an average adult body length of 6.6 mm.

Bird diversity and waterbird habitat preferences in relation to wetland restoration at Dianchi Lake, south-west China

Background:Restoration projects have been implemented worldwide to mitigate the adverse effects of the loss and degradation of wetland *** research has been carried out on the impacts on birds of wetland restoration and management projects in China. Studies have mainly investigated central or coastal wetlands,while inland wetlands in remote areas have been much less studied. We focused on examining the response of wild birds to wetland restoration in Dianchi Lake,south-west China. Methods: The line transect method was performed at 26 sampling *** of these were in the city,and to acquire all wild bird data 23 plots were located every 2-8 km along the shore of Dianchi Lake, between December 2011 and November *** collected all related bird records by searching the available literature, articles, newspapers and records of birdwatchers to compare species variation before and after implementation of wetland *** measure the relationships between waterbird assemblages and habitat structures, we used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to pair the main matrix of bird assemblages with a second matrix of habitat variables. Results: We recorded 182 bird species belonging to 51 families and 17 orders. Of the species, 42 were new records for Kunming City and 20 were new records for Yunnan Province. Ten waterbird species were found to have disappeared from the shore of Dianchi *** results indicated that waterbirds could be divided into four categories based on their habitat preference:synanthropic (wintering gulls), special habitat (shorebirds),semi-natural (wintering coots and ducks) and disturbance-tolerant (resident) ***:Our study is the first to consider the entire wild bird community throughout the year and discuss the species variation before and after wetland restoration projects launched for Dianchi *** habitat requirements of different waterbird groups were detected in our study,suggesting different types

Contrasting elevational diversity patterns for soil bacteria between two ecosystems divided by the treeline

Above- and below-ground organisms are closely linked, but how elevational distribution pattern of soil microbes shifting across the treeline still remains unknown. Sampling of 140 plots with transect, we herein investigated soil bacterial distribution pattern from a temperate forest up to a subalpine meadow along an elevational gradient using Illumina sequencing. Our results revealed distinct elevational patterns of bacterial diversity above and below the treeline in responding to changes in soil condi- tions： a hollow elevational pattern in the forest （correlated with soil temperature, pH, and C：N ratio） and a significantly de- creasing pattem in the meadow （correlated with soil pH, and available phosphorus）. The bacterial community structure was also distinct between the forest and meadow, relating to soil pH in the forest and soil temperature in the meadow. Soil bacteria did not follow the distribution pattern of herb diversity, but bacterial community structure could be predicted by herb community composition. These results suggest that plant communities have an important influence on soil characteristics, and thus change the elevational distribution of soil bacteria. Our findings are useful for future assessments of climate change impacts on microbial community.

Anthropogenic disturbances are widespread in tropical forests and influence the species composition in the ***,the impacts of historical disturbance on tropical forest overstory recovery are unclear due to a lack of disturbance data,and previous studies have focused on understory *** this study,the purpose was to deter-mine the influence of historical disturbance on the diver-sity,composition and regeneration of overstory species in present *** the 20-ha Xishuangbanna tropical sea-sonal rainforest dynamics plot in southwestern China,the historical disturbance boundaries were delineated based on panchromatic photographs from *** that drove species clustering in the overstory layer(DBH≥40 cm)were analyzed and the abundance,richness and composition of these species were compared among different tree groups based on multiple regression tree *** coefficient of variation of the brightness value in historical panchro-matic photographs from 1965 was the primary driver of spe-cies clustering in the overstory *** abundance and richness of overstory species throughout the regeneration process were similar,but species composition was always *** the proportion of large-seeded and vigorous-sprouting species showed no significant differ-ence between disturbed and undisturbed forests in the tree-let layer(DBH<20 cm),the difference became significant when DBH *** findings highlight that historical disturbances have strong legacy effects on functional group composition in the overstory and the recovery of overstory species was *** group composi-tion can better indicate the dynamics of overstory species replacement during secondary succession.

Drivers of tree demographic trade-offs in a temperate forest

Background: The demographic trade-offs(i.e. growth and survival) play important roles in forest dynamics and they are driven by multiple factors, including species’ inherent life-history strategies(such as shade-tolerance and mycorrhizal type), neighborhood interactions(such as conspecific negative density dependence, CNDD), and abiotic environment pressures. Although studies found that CNDD occurred in tropical and temperate forest,attempts to identify how the variations in CNDD control their impacts on growth and survival remain debate. In the present study, we conducted an extensive field survey, and analyzed demographic rates from 24 co-occurring temperate tree species, in order to test the importance of CNDD in shaping the growth-survival ***: Our study found that density dependence and environmental filtering were strong predictors for individual growth-survival trade-offs, while they showed variations across shade-intolerant and ectomycorrhizal species, as well as saplings and juveniles with more negative CNDD. Species growth showed positive relationship with mortality. And our results also support the fact that CNDD drives species growth-survival trade-offs at the community level with environmental ***: Our study indicates that biotic interactions such as density dependence and environment filtering played an important role in growth-survival trade-offs, and confirmed that the Janzen-Connell hypothesis in temperate forest was associated with species life-history strategies. In addition, shade-tolerance, mycorrhizal type and life-stage of forest species responded differently to CNDD, thus providing insights regarding different community assembly mechanisms and their interactions. Therefore, it is important to take species survival with growth and species life-history strategies into account when focusing on forest dynamics.

Tibetan Plateau: An evolutionary junction for the history of modern biodiversity

Holding particular biological resources,the Tibetan Plateau is a unique geologic-geographic-biotic interactively unite and hence play an important role in the global biodiversity *** Tibetan Plateau has undergone vigorous environmental changes since the Cenozoic,and played roles switching from"a paradise of tropical animals and plants"to"the cradle of Ice Age mammalian fauna".Recent significant paleontological discoveries have refined a big picture of the evolutionary history of biodiversity on that plateau against the backdrop of major environmental changes,and paved the way for the assessment of its far-reaching impact upon the biota around the plateau and even in more remote ***,based on the newly reported fossils from the Tibetan Plateau which include diverse animals and plants,we present a general review of the changing biodiversity on the Tibetan Plateau and its influence in a global *** define the Tibetan Plateau as a junction station of the history of modern biodiversity,whose performance can be categorized in the following three patterns:(1)Local origination of endemism;(2)Local origination and"Out of Tibet";(3)Intercontinental dispersal via *** first pattern is exemplified by the snow carps,the major component of the freshwater fish fauna on the plateau,whose temporal distribution pattern of the fossil schizothoracines approximately mirrors the spatial distribution pattern of their living *** ascent with modification,their history reflects the biological responses to the stepwise uplift of the Tibetan *** second pattern is represented by the dispersal history of some mammals since the Pliocene and some *** ancestors of some Ice Age mammals,e.g.,the wholly rhino,Arctic fox,and argali sheep first originated and evolved in the uplifted and frozen Tibet during the Pliocene,and then migrated toward the Arctic regions or even the North American continent at beginning of the Ice Age;the ancestor of panthe

Hydrogen Incorporation in Crystalline Jadeite: Insight from First Principles Calculations

Hydrogen incorporation is critical for explaining defect energies, structure parameters and other physical characteristics of minerals and understanding mantle dynamics. This work analyzed the hydrogen complex defects in jadeite by the plane-wave pseudo-potential method based on density functional theory, and optimized the atomic positions and lattice constants in all configurations （different defective systems）. Incorporation mechanisms considered for hydrogen （H） in jadeite include：（1） hydrogen incorporating with the 02 site oxygen and coexisting with M2 vacancy; （2） one H atom combined with an AI atom replacing Si in tetrahedron; （3） 4H atoms directly replacing Si in tetrahedron and （4） 3H atoms replacing Al on the M1 site. The four incorporation mechanisms mentioned above form the corresponding VNa-Hi, Alsi-Hi, Vsi-4Hi and VAr3Hi point defects. The molecular dynamics simulation to the ideal, VNa-Hi, Alsi-Hi, Vsi-4Hi and VAr3Hi point defects under the P-T conditions of 900 K, 2 GPa, the Vsa-Hi and Alsi-Hi point defects under different pressures at T = 900 K, and Alsj-Hj point defects under different temperatures at P = 3 GPa was performed to examine the preferential mode of hydrogen incorporation in jadeite by means of first-principles calculations. The calculations show that the averaged O-H bond-length in the hydrogen point defects system decreased in the order of Alsi-Hi, VNa-HI, Vsl-4Hf and VAI-3Hi. VNa-HI complex defects result in a contraction of the jadeite volume and the presence of Alsi-Hi, Vsi-4H~ and VAI-3Hi defects could increase the superceli volume, which is the most obvious in the VAt-3Hi defects. The energy of formation of Also-HI and VA[-3HI complex defects was much lower than that of other defect systems. The VAI-3Hi defects system has the lowest energy and the shortest O-H bond-length, suggesting that this system is the most favorable. Late Eocene sclerophyllous oak from Markam Basin, Tibet, and its biogeographic implications

Sclerophyllous evergreen broad-leaved forests,mainly made up of sclerophyllous oak,Quercus section Heterobalanus(Øerst.)Menitsky,Fagaceae,represent the most typical forest type in the Hengduan *** distribution pattern is closely related to the growth and formation of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP).The oldest fossil record of Quercus *** so far discovered is from the middle Miocene of the Gazhacun Formation in Namling County,southern ***,our recent discovery of leaf fossils from the upper Eocene of Lawula Formation in Markam Basin,southeastern Tibet,illustrates that their origin is nearly 20 Myr older than previously *** integrating the results from geometric morphometrics,geographical range expansion,and ecological niche shifts of this section in what is now the QTP and the Hengduan Mountains,we infer that the leaves of Quercus *** were already adapted to cool and dry conditions in some local regions no later than in the late ***,with the growth of the QTP and late Cenozoic global cooling,the expansion of cooler and drier habitats benefited the spread and development of this section and their leaves exhibited morphological stasis through stabilizing *** on published fossil records and recent discoveries,we argue that Quercus *** appeared in the subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forests of the southeastern margin of what is now the QTP no later than in the late *** taxa spread westwards along the Gangdese Mountains and later the Himalaya,and others spread eastwards and southeastwards,gradually becoming a dominant group of species in the Hengduan *** dispersal route is contrary to the previous“northwards hypothesis”of this section,and further supports the hypothesis of an East Asian origin for Quercus section Ilex Loudon.
