Grazing alters warming effects on leaf photosynthesis and respiration in Gentiana straminea,an alpine forb species

Aims Vast grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau are almost all under livestock *** is unclear,however,what is the role that the grazing will play in carbon cycle of the grassland under future climate *** found in our previous study that experimental warming can shift the optimum temperature of saturated photosynthetic rate into higher temperature in alpine *** this study,we proposed and tested the hypothesis that livestock grazing would alter the warming effect on photosynthetic and respiration through changing physical environments of grassland *** Experimental warming was carried by using an infrared heating system to increase the air temperature by 1.2 and 1.7℃ during the day and night,*** warming and ambient temperature treatments were crossed over to the two grazing treatments,grazing and un-grazed treatments,*** assess the effects of grazing and warming,we examined photosynthesis,dark respiration,maximum rates of the photosynthetic electron transport(J_(max)),RuBP carboxylation(V_(cmax))and temperature sensitivity of respiration Q_(10) in Gentiana straminea,an alpine species widely distributed on the Tibetan *** morphological and chemical properties were also examined to understand the physiological *** findings 1)Light-saturated photosynthetic rate(A_(max))of *** showed similar temperature optimum at around 16℃ in plants from all experimental *** warming increased A_(max) at all measuring temperatures from 10 to 25℃,but the positive effect of the warming occurred only in plants grown under the un-grazed *** the same measuring temperature,A_(max) was significantly higher in plants from the grazed than the un-grazed condition.2)There was significant crossing effect of warming and grazing on the temperature sensitivity(Q_(10))of leaf dark *** the un-grazed condition,plants from the warming treatment showed lower respiration rate b

Deep Bimodal Fusion Approach for Apparent Personality Analysis

Personality distinguishes individuals’ patterns of feeling, thinking,and behaving. Predicting personality from small video series is an excitingresearch area in computer vision. The majority of the existing research concludespreliminary results to get immense knowledge from visual and Audio(sound) modality. To overcome the deficiency, we proposed the Deep BimodalFusion (DBF) approach to predict five traits of personality-agreeableness,extraversion, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. In the proposedframework, regarding visual modality, the modified convolution neural networks(CNN), more specifically Descriptor Aggregator Model (DAN) areused to attain significant visual modality. The proposed model extracts audiorepresentations for greater efficiency to construct the long short-termmemory(LSTM) for the audio modality. Moreover, employing modality-based neuralnetworks allows this framework to independently determine the traits beforecombining them with weighted fusion to achieve a conclusive prediction of thegiven traits. The proposed approach attains the optimal mean accuracy score,which is 0.9183. It is achieved based on the average of five personality traitsand is thus better than previously proposed frameworks.

Transition of super-hydrophobic states of droplet on rough surface

Twelve samples with periodic array square pillars microstructure were prepared on the silicon wafer by plasma etching techniques, on which space b of the square pillars increased from 5 to 60 μm. In order to study the effect ofb on the wettability of the rough surface, the effects of apparent contact angle （CA） and sliding angle （a） of the droplet on the rough surface were measured with the contact angle meter. The results show that the experimental values of CA well agree with the classical wetting theory and a decreases with the increase of b. Two drop shapes exist on the samples＇ surface, corresponding to the Cassie state and the Wenzel state respectively. The contact state in which a drop would settle depends typically on the size of b. On the role of gravitation, the irreversible transition of a drop from Cassie state to Wenzel state should occur at a certain space of the square pillars. Since the transition has implications on the application of super-hydrophobic rough surfaces, theoretically, the prediction of wetting state transition on square pillar array micro-structured surfaces provides an intuitionistic guidance for the design of steady superhydrophobic surfaces.

Simulation of freezing and melting of soil on the northeast Tibetan Plateau

Using observational data spanning the period from February to December 2009 and recorded at the Suli station in Qinghai Province,the land-surface model CLM3.0 was employed to simulate the freezing and melting of *** results indicate that the simulated soil temperature is higher than the observed soil temperature and the ultimate thawing date is earlier than the observed date during the melting *** the freezing period,the simulated soil temperature is lower than the observed soil temperature and the ultimate freezing of the deep soil is earlier than that ***,the simulation of freezing is better than that of melting,and the simulation of a shallow layer is better than that of a deeper *** the original CLM3.0,it is assumed that frozen soil begins to melt when the soil temperature exceeds 0C,which is inconsistent with *** critical freeze-thaw temperature was calculated according to thermodynamics equations and the freeze-thaw condition was *** this work,the melting rate for frozen soil was reduced using the modified scheme,and the simulated soil temperature was lowered. Meanwhile,the refreezing of soil during the melting season was well simulated and more closely matched ***,it was found that the rates of melting and freezing differ,with the former being slower than the latter,but refreezing during the melting season is rather quick.

A High-accuracy Approach to Pronunciation prediction for Out-of-vocabulary English Word

Letter-to-Sound conversion is one of the fundamental issues in text-to-speech synthesis. In this paper, we address an approach to automatic prediction of word pronunciation. This approach combines example-based learning and dynamic-programming searching to predict sub-word pronunciation. Word pronunciation is formed by concatenating sub-word pronunciations. We conducted comparative experiments over a large-scale English dictionary. Experimental results show that this approach can achieve accuracy of 70.1%, which outperforms those published results.

Non-gaussian Test Models for prediction and State Estimation with Model Errors

Turbulent dynamical systems involve dynamics with both a large dimensional phase space and a large number of positive Lyapunov exponents. Such systems are ubiqui- tous in applications in contemporary science and engineering where the statistical ensemble prediction and the real time filtering/state estimation are needed despite the underlying complexity of the system. Statistically exactly solvable test models have a crucial role to provide firm mathematical underpinning or new algorithms for vastly more complex scien- tific phenomena. Here, a class of statistically exactly solvable non-Gaussian test models is introduced, where a generalized Feynman-Ka~ formulation reduces the exact behavior of conditional statistical moments to the solution to inhomogeneous Fokker-Planck equations modified by linear lower order coupling and source terms. This procedure is applied to a test model with hidden instabilities and is combined with information theory to address two important issues in the contemporary statistical prediction of turbulent dynamical systems： the coarse-grained ensemble prediction in a perfect model and the improving long range forecasting in imperfect models. The models discussed here should be use- ful for many other applications and algorithms for the real time prediction and the state estimation.

Ultra-hot Mesoproterozoic evolution of intracontinental central Australia

The Musgrave Province developed at the nexus of the North, West and South Australian cratons and its Mesoproterozoic evolution incorporates a 100 Ma period of ultra-high temperature （UHT） meta- morphism from ca. 1220 to ca. 1120 Ma. This was accompanied by high-temperature A-type granitic magmatism over an 80 Ma period, sourced in part from mantle-derived components and emplaced as a series of pulsed events that also coincide with peaks in UHT metamorphism. The tectonic setting for this thermal event （the Musgrave Orogeny） is thought to have been intracontinental and the lithospheric architecture of the region is suggested to have had a major influence on the thermal evolution. We use a series of two dimensional, fully coupled thermo-mechanical-petrological numerical models to investi- gate the plausibility of initiating and prolonging UHT conditions under model setup conditions appro- priate to the inferred tectonic setting and lithospheric architecture of the Musgrave Province. The results support the inferred tectonic framework for the Musgrave Orogeny, predicting periods of UHT meta- morphism of up to 70 Ma, accompanied by thin crust and extensive magmatism derived from both crustal and mantle sources. The results also appear to be critically dependent upon the specific location of the Mus^rave Province. constrained between thicker cratonic masses.

A physically-based integrated numerical model for flow,upland erosion,and contaminant transport in surface-subsurface systems

This paper presents a physically-based integrated hydrologic model that can simulate the rain-fall-induced 2D surface water flow, 3D variably saturated subsurface flow, upland soil erosion and transport, and contaminant transport in the surface-subsurface system of a watershed. The model couples surface and subsurface flows based on the assumption of continuity conditions of pressure head and exchange flux at the ground, considering infiltration and evapotranspiration. The upland rill/interrill soil erosion and transport are simulated using a non-equilibrium transport model. Contaminant transport in the integrated surface and subsurface domains is simulated using advection-diffusion equations with mass changes due to sediment sorption and desorption and exchanges between two domains due to infiltration, diffusion, and bed change. The model requires no special treatments at the interface of upland areas and streams and is suitable for wetland areas and agricultural watersheds with shallow streams.
