The fundamental limitations of most vascular-based functional neuroimaging techniques are placed by the fact how fine the brain regulates the blood supply system.In vivo mapping of the cerebral microcirculation with high resolution and sensitivity hence becomes unprecedentedly compelling.This paper reviews the theoretical background of the laser speckle contrast imaging(LSCI)technique and attempts to present a complete framework stemming from a simple biophysical model.Through the sensitivity analysis,more insights into the tool optimization are attained for in vivo applications.Open questions of the technical aspects are discussed within this unified framework.Finally,it concludes with a brief perspective of future research in a way analogous to the magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)technique.Such exploration could catalyze their development and initiate a technological fusion for precise assessment of blood flow across various spatial scales.

Purpose:To systematically review the risk of permanent disability related to road traffic injuries(RTIs)and to determine the implications for future research regarding permanent impairment following road traffic crashes.Methods:We conducted this systematic review according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis statement.An extended search of the literature was carried out in 4 major electronic databases for scientific research papers published from January 1980 to February 2020.Two teams include 2 reviewers each,screened independently the titles/abstracts,and after that,reviewed the full text of the included studies.The quality of the studies was assessed using the strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology(STROBE)checklist.A third reviewer was assessed any discrepancy and all data of included studies were extracted.Finally,the data were systematically analyzed,and the related data were interpreted.Results:Five out of 16 studies were evaluated as high-quality according to the STROBE checklist.Fifteen studies ranked the initial injuries according to the abbreviated injury scale 2005.Five studies reported the total risk of permanent medical impairment following RTIs which varied from 2%to 23%for car occupants and 2.8%to 46%for cyclists.Seven studies reported the risk of permanent medical impairment of the different body regions.Eleven studies stated the most common body region to develop permanent impairment,of which 6 studies demonstrated that injuries of the cervical spine and neck were at the highest risk of becoming permanent injured.Conclusion:The finding of this review revealed the necessity of providing a globally validated method to evaluate permanent medical impairment following RTIs across the world.This would facilitate decisionmaking about traffic injuries and efficient management to reduce the financial and psychological burdens for individuals and communities.

Development of a PVA Hydrogel for Bioprosthetic Heart Valve Stent and Other medical Applications

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel (15%w/w) was processed by freezing and thawing from one through six thermal cycles to obtain wide range of mechanical properties. The materials were tested under uniaxial tension and results show that matching mechanical properties to that of porcine aortic root can be achieved. A fatigue machine for elastomer materials and tissues was built and fatigue test on PVA sample was carried out. The test results show that the PVA has good fatigue property. The stent prototype was designed and successfully made by mold casting method. Some potential medical applications are discussed.

Aging biomarkers are a combination of biological parameters to(i)assess age-related changes,(ii)track the physiological aging process,and(iii)predict the transition into a pathological status.Although a broad spectrum of aging biomarkers has been developed,their potential uses and limitations remain poorly characterized.An immediate goal of biomarkers is to help us answer the following three fundamental questions in aging research:How old are we?Why do we get old?And how can we age slower?This review aims to address this need.Here,we summarize our current knowledge of biomarkers developed for cellular,organ,and organismal levels of aging,comprising six pillars:physiological characteristics,medical imaging,histological features,cellular alterations,molecular changes,and secretory factors.To fulfill all these requisites,we propose that aging biomarkers should qualify for being specific,systemic,and clinically relevant.

Structure reconstruction of 3 D anatomy from biplanar X-ray images is a challenging topic. Traditionally, the elastic-model-based method was used to reconstruct 3 D shapes by deforming the control points on the elastic mesh. However, the reconstructed shape is not smooth because the limited control points are only distributed on the edge of the elastic mesh.Alternatively, statistical-model-based methods, which include shape-model-based and intensity-model-based methods, are introduced due to their smooth reconstruction. However, both suffer from limitations. With the shape-model-based method, only the boundary profile is considered, leading to the loss of valid intensity information. For the intensity-based-method, the computation speed is slow because it needs to calculate the intensity distribution in each iteration. To address these issues, we propose a new reconstruction method using X-ray images and a specimen’s CT data. Specifically, the CT data provides both the shape mesh and the intensity model of the vertebra. Intensity model is used to generate the deformation field from X-ray images, while the shape model is used to generate the patient specific model by applying the calculated deformation field.Experiments on the public synthetic dataset and clinical dataset show that the average reconstruction errors are 1.1 mm and1.2 mm, separately. The average reconstruction time is 3 minutes.

AIM:To study the clinical efficacy and safety of Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT).We systematically reviewed FMT used as clinical therapy.METHODS:We searched MEDLINE,EMBASE,the Cochrane Library and Conference proceedings from inception to July,2013.Treatment effect of FMT was calculated as the percentage of patients who achieved clinical improvement per patient category,on an intention-to-treat basis.RESULTS:We included 45 studies;34 on Clostridium difficile-infection(CDI),7 on inflammatory bowel disease,1 on metabolic syndrome,1 on constipation,1 on pouchitis and 1 on irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).In CDI 90% resolution of diarrhea in 33 case series(n = 867) was reported,and 94% resolution of diarrhea after repeated FMT in a randomized controlled trial(RCT)(n = 16).In ulcerative colitis(UC) remission rates of 0% to 68% were found(n = 106).In Crohn's disease(CD)(n = 6),no benefit was observed.In IBS,70% improvement of symptoms was found(n = 13).100% Reversal of symptoms was observed in constipation(n = 3).In pouchitis,none of the patients(n = 8) achieved remission.One RCT showed significant improvement of insulin sensitivity in metabolic syndrome(n = 10).Serious adverse events were rare.CONCLUSION:FMT is highly effective in CDI,and holds promise in UC.As for CD,chronic constipation,pouchitis and IBS data are too limited to draw conclusions.FMT increases insulin sensitivity in metabolic syndrome.
