A conventional method to define short-term climate anomalies for atmospheric and oceanic variables,recommended by the World Meteorological Organization(WMO),is the departure from a 30-yr climatological mean in the preceding three *** a method,however,introduces spurious errors such as sudden jumps and artificial trends.A new method,named a trend correctional method,is introduced to eliminate the *** demonstrate the capability of this new method,we examine a set of idealized cases first by superposing a"true"interannual or interdecadal signal onto a linear or a nonlinear *** to the conventional method,the trend correctional method is able to retain,to a large extent,the"true"anomaly ***,we examined real-time *** anomaly time series derived based on the trend correctional method show a better agreement with the observed anomaly *** rootmean-square error is greatly improved,comparing to that calculated based on the conventional ***,the results from both the idealized and real cases demonstrate that the new method has a clear advantage to the conventional method in deriving true climate anomalies,in particular under the ongoing global warming circumstance.

Prison Types and Inmates’Psychosocial Profiles:A Comparison between Medium and Maximum Security Prison

Studies on the impacts the type of prison’s environment had on the psychosocial well‑being of their inmates were *** contribute more study on this,the current study explored the psychosocial health profiles of inmates and the type of prison environment by comparing inmates’psychosocial profiles of a medium security prison to a maximum security correctional facility located in north central *** were male inmates of medium security prison located in Bida,Niger‑State and Jos maximum security facility in Plateau‑*** the participants filled the study instruments(i.e.,a sociodemographic questionnaire,the ten‑item personality inventory,resilience scale,and Oslo Social Support Scale)after obtaining informed consent from *** was a significant positive association of prison types with resilience and social support which was reversed for *** multivariate analysis showed that inmates of medium security prison had significantly higher resilience and social support scores compared to those in maximum security correctional *** was no difference in the five dimensions of personality among the inmates and in their experience of *** findings add to extant knowledge on the impact that the level of“indigenous”deprivations had on inmates psychosocial wellness *** study hence advocated to the department of correctional services to modify the indigenous measures that promote resilience and social support without compromising security.

Background: Incarceration does not vitiate sexual desire. Therefore, sexual activities occur behind bars, regardless of the stringent rules in correctional institutions. However, little has been documented about risky sexual behaviors, determinants, and experiences among inmates of correctional institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria. The study determined the sexual practices, prevalence, and determinants of risky sexual behaviors among prison inmates in Katsina. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional design with concurrent mixed methods of data collection was used to interview 216 inmates using a semi-structured questionnaire supplemented with 22 in-depth interviews. Result: Most (94%) respondents were male, almost half (44.4%) had secondary education, more than half (55.1%) were engaged in business or trading before incarceration, and the majority (75.9%) were awaiting trial. Nearly all inmates (98.6%) reported having sexual desire. Drug use (80.1%) and unprotected sex (79.2%) were quite common but sexual violence was low (7.4%). The number of sexual partners of respondents remained a significant predictor of sexual activity. Inmates who had one (1) or no sexual partner were 64% less likely to engage in risky sexual activity within the confines of the prison (AOR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.20 - 0.63, p = 0.01). Although a high prevalence of HCV infection in correctional facilities has been well reported in several countries around the world, there has been no such data from Cameroon. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with viral hepatitis C seropositivity among prisoners incarcerated at the New Bell Central Prison in Douala. From the 2nd to the 27th of July 2018, 940 inmates selected using a systematic random sampling method were interviewed to collect data on sociodemographic status, duration of incarceration, number of incarcerations and risk factors for HCV transmission. Blood samples were collected for screening of anti-HCV antibodies via HEPA-SCAN HCV CARD Test. Positive samples had a confirmatory ELISA test. Data were analysed using EPI DATA 4.***.0.0 software. Statistical significance was set at a p < 0.05. Of the 940 prisoners selected, 94.1% (884) were males. The mean age of the study population was 33.81 ± 10.35 years (extremes: 14 and 74 years). HCV prevalence was 4.4% (40). The use of non-injectable illicit drugs (OR 2.87 95% CI 1.44 - 5.73) (p = 0.002) but not injectable illicit drugs (OR 1.91 95% CI 0.43 - 8.41) (p = 0.42), male homosexuality (OR 17.45 95% CI 7.58 - 40.13) (p < 0.001), sharing of needles (OR 3.45 95% CI 1.59 - 7.83) (p = 0.001), past history of tattooing or piercing (OR 5.94 95% CI 2.80 - 12.16) (p < 0.001) and age ≥ 50 (OR 4.069;95% CI 1.9 - 8.68) (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with HCV antibodies positivity. Inmates in New Bell Central Prison accumulate risk factors for viral hepatitis C, thus contributing to the high prevalence in this setting. Control strategies and programs that reach this particular population should urgently be implemented.
