Dear Editor,LIF,a multi-functional cytokine,is frequently overexpressed in many human cancers,including breast,colorectal,and pancreatic cancers(Liu et al.,2013;Li et al.,2014;Yu et al.,2014;Pascual-Garcia et al.,2019;Shi et al.,2019;Wang et al.,2019).LIF overexpression is frequently associated with poor prognosis in human cancers(Liu et al.,2013;Li et al.,2014;Yu et al.,2014).LIF functions through binding to LIF receptor complex composed of LIF receptor(LIF-R)and glycoprotein gp130(Taga and Kishimoto,1997;Heinrich et al.,2003;Watanabe et al.,2006).LIF overexpression induces activation of several oncogenic signaling pathways in a cell/tissue type-specific manner,including STAT3,PI3K/AKT,and mTOR,which in turn promotes proliferation,metastasis,and therapeutic resistance of cancer cells(Liu et al.,2013;Li et al.,2014;Yu et al.,2014;Shi et al.,2019).Recent studies have suggested that LIF is a potential important target for cancer therapy,especially for cancers with LIF *** neutralization antibodies(LIF neu Abs)have been reported to block LIF signaling and largely abolish the promoting effect of LIF on cancer progression(Li et al.,2014;Yue et al.,2016;Shi et al.,2019).

Mimicking the natural design motifs of structural biological materials is a promising approach to achieve a unique combination of strength and toughness for engineering *** this study,we proposed a 2D computational model,which is a two-hierarchy hybrid composite inspired by the ultrastructural features of *** model is composed of alternating parallel array of two subunits(A&B)mimicking‘mineralized collagen fibril’and‘extrafibrillar matrix’of bone at ultrastructural *** subunit-A is formed by short stiff platelets embedded within a soft *** subunit-B consists of randomly distributed stiff grains bonded by a thin layer of tough adhesive *** assess the performance of the bioinspired design,a conventional unidirectional long-fiber composite made with the same amount of hard and soft phases was *** finite element simulation results indicated that the toughness,strength and elastic modulus of the bioinspired composite was 312%,83%,and 55%of that of the conventional composite,*** toughness improvement was attributed to the prevalent energy-dissipating damage of adhesive phase in subunit-B and crack-bridging by subunit-A,the two major toughening mechanisms in the *** study exemplifies some insights into natural design of materials to gain better material performance.

Coastal Louisiana has the nation’s most fragile and valuable wetlands,whose loss represents 80% of the total losses in the United *** severely restricted mobility of conventional shoreline protection structures makes them impossible to be *** Wave Suppression and Sediment Collection(WSSC) system is a novel technology of high mobility and compatible with existing shoreline protection *** laboratory studies on WSSC showed great potential for wave reduction and sediment *** current study aimed to optimize the design parameters of WSSC using a validated computational model.A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed and validated using experimental data from the previous laboratory ***,a parametric analysis was conducted with a focus on the performance optimization of wave reduction and sediment collection with respect to pipe diameter and face *** results showed that the wave reduction efficiency decreased with increasing pipe diameter and face *** contrast,the sediment transport efficiency was enhanced by increasing pipe diameter but was not affected significantly by varying face slopes.

Estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women is a major cause of bone loss,resulting in osteopenia,osteoporosis,and a high risk for bone *** 43 (Cx43) hemichannels (HCs) in osteocytes play an important role in osteocyte viability,bone formation,and *** showed here that estrogen deficiency reduced Cx43 expression and HC *** determine if functional HCs protect osteocytes and bone loss during estrogen deficiency,we adopted an ovariectomy model in wild-type (WT) and two transgenic Cx43 mice:R76W (dominant-negative mutant inhibiting only gap junction channels) and Cx43 Δ130–136 (dominant-negative mutant compromising both gap junction channels and HCs).The bone mineral density (BMD),bone structure,and histomorphometric changes of cortical and trabecular bones after ovariectomy were *** results showed that the Δ130–136 transgenic cohort had greatly decreased vertebral trabecular bone mass compared to WT and R76W mice,associated with a significant increase in the number of apoptotic osteocyte and empty ***,osteoclast surfaces in trabecular and cortical bones were increased after ovariectomy in the R76W and WT mice,respectively,but not in Δ130–136 *** data demonstrate that impairment of Cx43 HCs in osteocytes accelerates vertebral trabecular bone loss and increase in osteocyte apoptosis,and further suggest that Cx43 HCs in osteocytes protect trabecular bone against catabolic effects due to estrogen deficiency.
